Help! My dog has gone off their food! What can I do?

We get asked this question a lot in-store especially during the summer months. Firstly don’t panic. Dogs self regulate when it comes to food, meaning they may miss a meal or two if they don’t feel hungry.

Try to switch things up. Maybe try a new brand or protein? Remember every brand is different when it comes to textures. During the hotter months try feeding frozen instead of defrosted.

Try adding a topper such as bone broth, grated pate or even yak cheese sprinkles! To help get them interested.

Make it fun and engaging! Try using a kong, lickimat or a trachea and stuff/spread their food. You can even refreeze to keep them engaged for longer!

Lamb testicles from The Dogs Butcher

A raw lamb testicle makes a great occasional treat, or can be fed as part of a balanced, nutritional meal.

Testicles are part of the ‘offal family’ they are high in iron, vitamin B12 and low in fat. They also contain small amounts of potassium, iron, zinc and magnesium.

Secreting organs should make up 10% of a dog's diet. 5% of these should be liver, testicles are a great choice for the other 5%.

This video just popped up on my memories - while it's a gorgeous reminder of my playful pups, you can also see how underweight Oz was. Ru's weight wasn't as bad, but was suffering with yeasty paws and ears. This video was taken 9 years ago, just as we were about to start our raw feeding journey, having tried several different kibbles from Chappie 😫 to more expensive 'premium' brands. Within a month of switching, Oz had piled on kilos and Ru's skin was good as new! Here at ROAR, we really believe in the power of a natural, species appropriate diet because we have seen the results first hand, and we're passionate about sharing our knowledge and experience with as many people as possible.
