The Tamworth is considered Britain's oldest pure breed of pig and thought to be the closest living relative of the Old English Forest Pig. A very hardy animal suited to an outdoor system, the Tamworth can be kept of a range of environments including woodland, rough pasture and meadowland.

Based on the British Pig Association breed survey for 2023, there are only a total of 239 pedigree sows for the breed in the UK. The Tamworth is a Priority breed on the RBST Watchlist.

The Tamworth is active and requires strong fencing. Their ginger colour prevents sunburn. The Tamworth is particularly hardy and so is used in colder climates, such as Scotland and Canada on rough pasture to meadow land. They’re a good breed for rooting and do well in a woodland based system.

A long legged, lean pig they’re excellent mothers, being milky, docile as well as protective. Sows weigh 260kg and boars, 320kg. In the 1970's when there were only 17 surviving boars. Sometimes crossed with wild boar to produce distinctive gamey pork.

The 2024-25 RBST Watchlist is now available!!!

The Watchlist is produced using breed society data we are able to assess the conservation status of each of our native breeds.

Taking into account parameters including the Effective Population Size, breed numbers, disease risk and geographic concentration.

The RBST Watchlist 2024-25 shows which of the UK’s cattle, sheep, pig, goat, poultry and equine breeds are now the most urgent ‘Priority’ concerns, which remain ‘At Risk’, and which are currently non-rare native breeds.
