Did you know that your pets can get tapeworms by swallowing an infected flea?
While tapeworms don’t commonly cause serious problems, they can lead to irritation on your pet's bottom, weight loss and other gastrointestinal issues.

Have you heard of whipworms? It’s quite possible that you haven’t, as it’s not a common parasite that affects our four-legged friends (thankfully!) in the UK - and cats here aren’t at risk.
Whipworm eggs can live in the environment for up to 5 years, with their ability to survive extreme temperatures and light exposure.
All the more reason why regularly picking up your dog’s poo and staying up-to-date with parasite control is so important for your furry best friend!

Have you ever heard of lung worms? These parasites used to be rare in the UK but have been spreading across the country.
Dogs become infected by eating slugs, snails and even frogs that carry this parasite! Once the dog is infected with lungworm, the adult parasite will live in the dog’s heart and blood vessels, while the larvae will stay in the lung tissue. This can lead to serious health issues, so prevention is vital!

Roundworms like Toxocara canis don’t just infect dogs - they are spread in faeces and lie dormant in the soil until they reach another host, including people (especially children). Some mites don’t cause any trouble unless there are too many of them, or the dog is unwell. One example is Demodex, which is a normal resident of a dog’s hair follicles - but sometimes there are too many of them and they cause hair loss and a non-itchy rash. The sarcoptic mange mite is an eight legged parasite that is itchier than any other parasite - it makes affected dogs and cats miserable. They develop rashes and hair loss, and they may self harm. It can also infect humans, but the best way to protect your pets and yourself is regular treatment of dogs and cats in the house.

There are several types of tick in the UK, but the most common is the Sheep Tick. Also known as the Castor Bean Tick or Ixodes ricinus. Other species include the Hedgehog Tick and the Brown Dog Tick.
