Did you know that your pets can get tapeworms by swallowing an infected flea?
While tapeworms don’t commonly cause serious problems, they can lead to irritation on your pet's bottom, weight loss and other gastrointestinal issues.
Prevention is key, so don’t forget to treat your pets regularly for both fleas and worms!

Have you heard of whipworms? It’s quite possible that you haven’t, as it’s not a common parasite that affects our four-legged friends (thankfully!) in the UK - and cats here aren’t at risk.
Whipworm eggs can live in the environment for up to 5 years, with their ability to survive extreme temperatures and light exposure.
All the more reason why regularly picking up your dog’s poo and staying up-to-date with parasite control is so important for your furry best friend!

Did you know that for flea protection to be effective you have to give your pet preventative treatments all year round?
Though most active during spring and summer, fleas are perfectly capable of surviving the colder months and make themselves unwanted tenants of your pets and home!
Talk to us today about which preventative treatment is the best option for your pet.

Owners of adventurous furry friends, is your pet protected against ticks?
To avoid nasty surprises after a great day outdoors, always check your pets for ticks when you get home and don’t forget to keep their flea and tick treatment up to date before heading out.

Have you ever heard of lung worms? These parasites used to be rare in the UK but have been spreading across the country.
Dogs become infected by eating slugs, snails and even frogs that carry this parasite! Once the dog is infected with lungworm, the adult parasite will live in the dog’s heart and blood vessels, while the larvae will stay in the lung tissue. This can lead to serious health issues, so prevention is vital!
Speak to us about preventive treatment against lungworm.

Have you ever seen a tick on your pet? They are everywhere, and their numbers boom in the spring and summer, especially on pets that love to go on outdoor adventures!
Unfortunately, they can cause serious problems like Lyme disease. This is why regular preventive parasite treatments are important for your pets.

Roundworms like Toxocara canis don’t just infect dogs - they are spread in faeces and lie dormant in the soil until they reach another host, including people (especially children). Then they crawl through the body, sometimes ending up in the liver, eye or brain. The best way to keep your pet and your family safe is by regularly worming your pets - talk to us for advice!

Some mites don’t cause any trouble unless there are too many of them, or the dog is unwell. One example is Demodex, which is a normal resident of a dog’s hair follicles - but sometimes there are too many of them and they cause hair loss and a non-itchy rash. Talk to us about treatment and prevention.

Intestinal worms such as roundworms live in your pet’s intestine and eat their food. If that makes you uncomfortable, think how they feel! A heavy worm infestation is unpleasant and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, weight loss and poor coat condition. The most effective control plan is regular treatment - they’ll thank you!

The sarcoptic mange mite is an eight legged parasite that is itchier than any other parasite - it makes affected dogs and cats miserable. They develop rashes and hair loss, and they may self harm. It can also infect humans, but the best way to protect your pets and yourself is regular treatment of dogs and cats in the house.

There are several types of tick in the UK, but the most common is the Sheep Tick. Also known as the Castor Bean Tick or Ixodes ricinus. Other species include the Hedgehog Tick and the Brown Dog Tick. Whatever variety, though, these bloodsuckers carry diseases that can make dogs really poorly, so pop in and talk to us about tick prevention.

Tick bites don’t usually hurt - because the tick secretes a local anaesthetic to numb the area. As a result, dogs and cats tend to ignore the hungry beast that’s latched onto them! This is why checking your pet over regularly is important, especially after a walk through fields or long grass. For advice on tick prevention, give us a call!
