Some great tips here for Guy Fawkes Night!πŸ‘πŸŽ†
Please review the information and resources we have shared over the past few weeks to help your pet through the next couple of days! Remember to read our most recent blog on firework phobias on our website - we hope you find it helpful.β˜ΊοΈπŸ’œ

https://ashleyvets.co.uk/dealing-with-firework-phobias/

Ahead of Bonfire Night, we have teamed up with Magic Classical for the pawfect canine calming playlist 🎢

Calming Pet Sounds, presented by Emma B, plays relaxing classical music to help you create a calm and soothing atmosphere for your dog to relax in. Every dog responds differently to fireworks but staying calm and using music to mask the sounds outside can help improve behaviour during fireworks season πŸŽ†

The playlist is available on the Rayo app or you can tell your smart speaker to 'Ask Rayo to play Calming Pet Sounds'.

And don’t forget our tips πŸ‘‡
β€’ Plan for a cosy night-in – close the curtains, put on the radio, create a safe space for your dog and prepare with toys and treats.
β€’ Walk your dog before it gets dark and never force your dog outside during fireworks.
β€’ If your dog wants to hide, let them. But if your dog seeks reassurance, calmly give them attention and comfort. Research shows that ignoring them won’t help.
β€’ Give your dog any prescribed medication before fireworks start.
β€’ Check your house and garden are escape-proof. Your dog could try to run away if they’re scared so check your doors, windows and fences are secure.

Did you know that our pets, like people, can develop diabetes?
This month, let’s focus on the importance of awareness, early detection, and management for our four-legged family members.πŸ’œ

For the month of November, we will be sharing information and resources on how to recognise and manage diabetes in your pets.

One of the key diagnostic tools for diabetes is a test called urinalysis. A urinalysis is a test of your pets' urine. It's used to detect and manage a wide range of disorders, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and ππ’πšπ›πžππžπ¬.

Therefore, for the whole month of November, we will be offering 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 π”π‘πˆππ€π‹π˜π’πˆπ’ to all of our lovely patients!

All you need to do is:
πŸ”ΉCatch a urine sample in a clean container.
πŸ”ΉBring the sample to us for testing as soon as possible after collection.

And that's it! One of our nurses will perform the urinalysis, and we will be in touch with the results. Easy as that! Even if your pet doesn't have a chronic health issue, a urinalysis can provide a great insight into their overall health - so we suggest that everyone makes good use of this brilliant offer! All in aid of Pet Diabetes Awareness Month.πŸ’œ

If you have any questions, please call us on 0141 959 6100.
Have a lovely weekend everyone!πŸΎπŸ’œ

Did we all enjoy that extra hour in bed on Sunday morning? πŸ‘€

The clocks going back an hour might be fortunate for us - but did you know that the darker evenings can have an effect on our little creatures of habit?😺🐾

It's good to be aware that a sudden change in routine can be a difficult thing for our pets to adjust to. Altering your routine slowly over the course of this week can really help our pets. Dinner time, walking times and bedtime should be slowly delayed to suit the time change in small increments. Our pets don't understand that the clocks have changed, so try not to be cross with them if they have an accident in the house, or are demanding their dinner too early! Those of us with senior pets - it's best to remember that they may particularly struggle with this. If you think it might be helpful to speak with one of our nurses, or your senior pet is particularly out of sorts this week - please phone the practice to get your little one booked in to see us. We may be able to give you some advice on other things that could help them. πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ’œ

Darker nights! Something else to be aware of, as being seen in the dark is crucial for our pets' safety. We recommend reflective jackets, harnesses and collars for dogs. If you have an outdoor cat, consider using a reflective collar, or high visibility charms which reflect light, to help them be more visible at night. Lastly, as always, ensure your pets are MICROCHIPPED and your contact details are up to date! Not being able to locate the owner of a pet that has been found injured and needs urgent medical attention can be a worrisome situation. Please phone the practice as soon as possible to get your pet booked in to be microchipped, if this is something you've been putting off. πŸ“žπŸ‘‹πŸΌ

🚨HALLOWEEN TOP TIPS🚨

First of all, we'd like to thank you all for your amazing response to our homemade Halloween treats - you'd cleared us out! Not to worry, we've been busy today making a fresh batch to give out to all of your little ones, so pop into the practice to grab some if you're passing!πŸ’β€β™€οΈπŸ‘»

As the time fast approaches, let's talk about some more Halloween hazards to be aware of in the coming week!

πŸŽƒ Be very cautious with costumes and decorations! As cute as our pets may look when they're all dressed up for trick-or-treating, they can sometimes become a choking hazard. Pets can chew and tear the fabric or smaller parts of their costumes, which in turn can cause intestinal blockages. Let's also be very wary of masks this spooky season, as they can be a suffocation risk to pets. Best to keep our little ones under close supervision while they are playing dress up this Halloween.
πŸŽƒIt would be a good idea to move your cats' dinner time to before it gets dark, to hopefully encourage them to come home earlier, as the streets will be busier than usual with trick-or-treaters. If your cat is particularly nervous, we'd recommend keeping them inside to protect them from all those outdoor fears, such as crowds of people in costumes, bright lights and loud noises.
πŸŽƒHalloween hype can be stressful for dogs! It would be a good idea to walk your dog earlier in the day, to avoid their usual walking route being too busy. If you expect strangers in scary costumes to come knocking at your door and your dog to be stressed by this - keep them in a separate, quiet room with their blanket and toys to comfort them. Remember to secure any escape routes! Upset pets may try to run away and get lost.
πŸŽƒIf you think that trick-or-treaters will worry your pet, you can leave a notice on your front door asking people to refrain from knocking or ringing the bell. Just leave sweeties for them outside instead!🍭🍫

As always, any questions or worries - you know where we are!πŸ’œπŸ‘‹

Miss Pixie spent the day with us today, but we don't think she's holding any grudges! She got a piece of wood stuck between her teeth and needed to be sedated so we could remove it. She's back home on her sofa now - fingers crossed she recovers well and learns her lesson this time!!

Please click on the link below to read our most recent blog post by one of our veterinary nurses - Robyn! She has included some very useful tips and information to keep in mind for the upcoming fireworks season.

If you need any advice on how to keep your pet calm and safe during fireworks, please give the practice a call. Remember there are many things we can do to help!πŸ’œ

Firework phobias are very common. In 2017, the PDSA’s Paw Report found that 39% of dog and cat owners reported that their pet was scared of fireworks.
