The "Sprinkles" game, also known as scatter feeding, can have many benefits for dogs, including:
Mental stimulation: The game can tire your dog out mentally and help fulfill their natural instincts.
Confidence: The game can help build your dog's confidence in their abilities.
Stress reduction: The game can help lower your dog's long-term stress levels.
Calming: The game can help calm your dog down in their home or garden.
Boredom relief: The game can help relieve your dog's boredom.
Sniffing: The game can help get your dog outdoors to use their nose and get some sniffing in.
To play the game, you can scatter small pieces of your dog's food around for them to find. You can use a couple of handfuls for a large dog or two dogs, and less for a small dog. You can also use other smelly foods like small pieces of cheese, ham, leftover meat, or flakes of tuna.
Dogs are natural scavengers, and when they engage in sniffing and eating, they release dopamine. This tells them that what they're doing is fun and rewarding, so they want to do more of it.
Here's our video to learn more about the Sprinkles game:
Remember remember the 5th of November. Tonight and the weekend will be a challenging time for many Pets and their owners, you can check out lots of helpful tips all over on the internet.
But here are some top tips I find useful for the Citypoochers.
Sprinkles, if you have a safe garden area, spread and hide cheese, tuna or chicken. Interactive games are an excellent source to calm the mind, help relax and tire. I use sprinkles as a go to when walks are limited due to an injury or hot temps. The dogs love this rewarding game.
Lickimat again - very mindful very demure.. only kidding, but again can help calm and tire even the most active energetic pup. Best use Kefir, natural Greek yogurt, dog friendly peanut butter, primula cheese, JR patè chopped or grated (we love Paws.Originals own make)
You can pop these in the freezer to help make it last a little longer.
Enrichment toys, games and snuffle mats all contribute to calming methods and can keep the dogs occupied and may even help desensitise your pets.
A little bit of pasta, carbohydrates can help your dog feel sleepy and full, close the curtains, turn TV/Radio up louder than normal if possible.
Auntie Nicky's handmade dog snoods will help muffle the noise if used around the head/ear area.
I use Alexa - classical or Spa sounds on a loop, BBC radio will have music on for the dogs too.
Homemade anxiety bandage wrap or thunder-shirt. I wrap extremely nervous dogs up in a fleece blanky cuddle and soothe with a calming voice. (I'll post instructions for bandage wrap on my stories)
A nice big walk during the day and early eve. Make sure collar with tag, harness is secure, trackers is always useful to have. Ensure your microchip details are all up to date!
Extending leads are very dangerous please use a secure short lead, short leads also promotes confidence and proper control for your dogs.
My most favourite - Dogs.TV if you have a smart tv you can view this on YouTube.
Best of luck and stay safe.
