Is Your Pet Rabbit Vaccinated?

With spring weather upon us, your rabbit might be outside more often, so at Rouken Glen Vets we want to be sure you’re aware of the two main diseases that can affect your pet. Myxomatosis (myxo) and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD) can strike even if your pets live well away from other rabbits. Both can be fatal.
Fortunately, vaccines are available to protect rabbits from deadly diseases. So why not call the surgery to check your rabbit’s vaccinations are up to date and discuss how to protect your fluffy friend further?
PROTECT YOUR PET NOW
A common misconception of myxomatosis is that your rabbit needs to be in contact with other rabbits to catch it. In reality, it can spread quickly and is passed through fleas, mosquitos, midges and mites, so your pet may become infected even if they never see another rabbit.
The first sign of myxo is severe conjunctivitis. Even with the best possible veterinary treatment, very few unvaccinated pet rabbits will survive, so vaccination is essential.
Viral haemorrhagic disease often occurs in outbreaks, spreading rapidly from rabbit to rabbit. The virus can be carried to new areas in feed, on bedding, by wild birds and insects, and on the feet of rabbit owners who've been walking in an infected area. So just like myxo, your rabbit doesn’t need to be in contact with other rabbits to catch it.
Very few infected rabbits recover but VHD is easily preventable by vaccines.
Timing your vaccinations
Protect your rabbit against both diseases with just one injection a year. Although, in some circumstances, your vet may advise more frequent vaccinations. Rabbits of all ages can be vaccinated – check with the practice about the most suitable time to bring a new baby rabbit in for their first check-up and vaccination.
If you can’t remember when your rabbit is due a booster
If your rabbit has been vaccinated and you can’t remember when your booster is due, give us a call.
Bringing your rabbit for vaccination also gives you the perfect opportunity to talk to the team about any concerns you have.

It’s Easter weekend and it’s not just the humans mouths that water with the sight of all the chocolate and goodies that fill our homes at this time of year. Unfortunately our pets are just as keen to get their paws on them and can be toxic if ingested.
Whether it’s chocolate eggs or hot cross buns, the ingredients of all these tasty treats can be fatal if eaten by our pets.
Please be cautious and ensure gifts are kept up high out of paws reach.
If you think your pet has ingested something that they shouldn’t have, always seek veterinary advice.
Attached is a chocolate calculator published by Vets Now that provides guidance if chocolate is ingested by your dog.

Dog chocolate toxicity poisoning can be fatal. Use our dog chocolate calculator to find out whether your dog has eaten a dangerous amount.

Little Baxter was so brave when he was in the surgery for his second vaccination on Friday. ♥️

It is very important that puppies and kittens and baby rabbits, receive an initial vaccination course when they are young then an annual booster to top up their immunity against some very nasty diseases.

If you have any questions regarding vaccination, please don’t hesitate to contact the surgery and a member of the team can do their best to advise you.

Is your pet Epileptic or suffers from seizures?

We understand how worrying and limiting it can be having a pet that seizures.

Glasgow university small animal hospital clinicians recently ran an evening for owners and caregivers of seizing animals which provided tips and support , while speaking to others who understand.

One of our veterinary nurses, Lindy, has a dog called Nevis and he has seized for the past few years. Even as a veterinary professional, this is a stressful condition to care for and after attending one of these sessions, Lindy would highly recommend it to others.
Keep an eye on the Small animal hospital social media pages and www.petseizureclinic.co.uk for more information.

⚠️ MICROCHIP REGISTRATION SCAM ⚠️

Please be vigilant and report any emails that you may receive informing you that your pets microchip registration is running out and payment is required to keep it up to date. THIS IS A SCAM!

We have been informed by a few clients that they have received this email, from what looks like a reputable organisation.

Please be aware of the company/database your pets is registered with and only make changes to their microchip details through that organisation!

Pet owners are urged to be careful if asked to verify animals' microchip details.

Please ensure that all dogs are kept on leads within the car park area and entering the surgery.

The car park is so busy, especially with the nicer weather and a dog running from the car cannot be seen by cars reversing out of spaces etc. There have been several near misses and we don’t want any dogs to be injured!

Are your pets up to date with their anti parasitic treatments, protecting them from fleas, ticks, mites and worms?
At Rouken Glen Vets we strongly recommend that these treatments are kept up to date to ensure your pets are fully protected.
We are aware that there have been a growing number of cases of lungworm being diagnosed and therefore stress the importance of an anti-parasite regime.

Our veterinary staff can advise you of the most appropriate treatment for your pet, which can also be accessed via our Healthy Pet Club. Please ask at reception for more details.

If you’re worried your dog has lungworm, read this helpful article from Vets Now to help spot the signs

Meet Rex 🩵

Rex was in for his puppy check with nurse Kim, before he had an appointment for his second vaccination with vet Catriona.
As you can see he was quite happy sitting on the consulting room table while we had a chat with his owners and had his little sharp nails trimmed! I’m not sure he will be able to fit on the table for long!

Lower urinary tract disease is a very common issue that we see amongst our feline patients in particular.
International Cat Care, a reputable cat welfare charity have put together this guidance for owners of cats who suffer from this condition, that can lead to repeated vet visits and the requirement for medication.
