Want to keep a saddle patch, but the hair is too long and gets sweaty?

Here I’ve clipped the saddle patch shorter using a 9.6mm Skip Tooth blade on my Harmony Plus to leave enough hair behind.

Why leave a saddle patch?

Saddle patches can be good for horses have more sensitive skin, and could be prone to rubs from the saddle/saddlecloth.

Whilst this could be an indication that the saddle may not fit correctly, it can also just be the fact your horse has sensitive skin. (If you haven’t had your saddle checked by a qualified fitter recently, I would recommend having it checked to be on the safe side).

So, to help combat this, we can leave hair - making sure that the hair extends to the back of the saddle and pad that you’re using is important.

Another thing that you can do is look at what saddlecloth you are using.
Sometimes the binding or seams can be the cause of the rubbing. I find thin sheepskin pads directly on the back of the horse is the best way to stop these rubs.

I also like to make sure that there is hair still covering the top of the withers. Some horses can end up with sores from rugs, and the hair seems to help stop this - this seems to be more common with high withered horses.

I’ve not shared this post for a while!

Dirty/wet horse = surcharge or refusal to clip.

Please make sure your horse is as clean as possible for clipping, and they must be bone dry!

If you want a show quality clip, they you should present a show clean horse 🐴 🛁 🦄

‘I just bathed him last week!’

Did ye, aye? 🤦🏻‍♀️

I always ask my clients to bath their horse the day before clipping (this is to allow for adequate drying time).
Most of my clients are booked in around 2-4 weeks in advance, so that’s plenty of time to organise bathing your horse!

But really, why should your horse be as clean as possible for clipping? 🤨

• To prevent dirt, grease, mud, grit etc blunting blades super quickly, causing them to snag and pull on your horse’s hair.

• To look after the clipper motors - dirty hair and blunt blade will put excess strain on the motor, which will cause damage, and an expensive repair bill.

• To make is as comfortable an experience as possible for the horse - hair snagging HURTS.

• To get the smoothest, most flawless, perfect clip possible.
Dirt = lines and patches.
Clippers are perfectionists, it upsets us to leave you with a sub-standard clip.

• To avoid a ‘dirty horse’ surcharge from your professional clipper, or a repair bill for damaged equipment.

We hate clipping the horse like this, we hate what it does to our equipment, we hate charging more money.

Bath your horse.

Why should your horse be clean for clipping?

⬇️⬇️⬇️

A clean, dry, dirt & grease free coat is the best canvas a clipper could ask for before clipping your horse. A clean coat makes a massive difference to the quality of a clip - there will be less lines and a much smoother finish. A freshly clipped coat. This horse was bathed the day before clipping,....

‘The clip hasn’t lasted long at all!’

The change in daylight hours is what triggers the winter coat change and growth -
In the UK, horse’s coats tend to start changing from (roughly) early September and can continue to grow in reasonably quickly through to the winter solstice, at which point the coat growth will slow down.

You’ll find that clips between September-December don’t ’last as long’ as clips done in the New Year. This is because the winter coat is continually growing until the solstice.
Natives/cobs/heavies tend to be on the hairier side, so some may need clipped every 4 weeks (give or take) if you want to keep them neat.
Whereas warmblood/TB/finer types may only need clipped 2/3 times over the whole winter, as they tend to grow a finer coat.

This is a rough guide, not a set in stone rule!
Every horse is different, and there are a lot of factors to consider -
• Age
• Breed
• Coat type (thick/fine/dense/long…)
• Health (Cushing’s Disease, EMS etc)
• Weight
• Workload
• Routine (in/out)
• Or, just like people - they can be hairy/not so hairy, no matter what the breed of horse is!

How often do you clip your horse? Tell me their breed etc and why you chose to do it as often as you do!

Sometimes clipping can shave off a few inches around the waist 🤣

This handsome boy, who has EMS, was too warm even just standing in the stable.
He’ll be much more comfortable (and looks more streamlined too!)

It’s been a mega busy month - today was an especially busy day with 9 clipped (1 bib, 1 blanket, and the rest hunter or full 😮‍💨)

There is very little availability left for November -

IRISH CLIP ☘️

This is basically a higher/extended version of the bib clip, and great for horses in light to medium work.
It’s a very quick and easy clip to do, so it’s ideal for a first clip or for a youngster.

Hair from the neck, shoulders and belly is clipped.
The line can be adjusted higher or lower to suit your needs - higher will remove most, if not all of the neck hair. Lower tends to just take off the lower 1/2-1/3.

You can also choose how far back to take your line - if your horse is particularly sensitive around the stifle area and gets ‘kicky’, you can avoid this area if needed by stopping closer to the sternum rather than going as far back as the stifle.

Most of my clients are booked in around 4 weeks in advance, so that’s plenty of time to organise bathing your horse!
If you are unable to bath your horse, then a thorough groom should be carried out instead. A thorough groom will take you a minimum of an hour, and your arms should be sore by the end of it.

There are a couple of exceptions to the clean horse rule - Cushing’s coats which won’t dry, welfare clips for severe matting etc.

But really, why should your horse be as clean as possible for clipping? 🤨
