Hamish came in with bloody diarrhoea last week and he was very lethargic and not feeling his normal happy self. He got some bloods done which were thankfully all normal which checked his organ health and the ability of his guts to absorb nutrients and we did a faecal sample which checked for parasites as well as infections and he cultured a profuse about of campylobacter. Campylobacter is a bacterial gut infection and commonly causes diarrhoea, straining, abdominal cramping, fever and lethargy. Some dogs can appear to get better and then the diarrhoea relapses. It is a zoonotic bacteria which means it can infect humans too so his owners were careful when picking up his p**p! He is now on appropriate treatment and we hope he is feeling much better very soon!
