It's Rabbit Awareness Week! 🐰🐇

This year we are promoting happy, hoppy homes which focuses on the importance of suitable housing and environment for indoor and outdoor rabbits.

Sadly, 22% of pet rabbits in the UK (around 180,000) are currently living in inadequate homes meaning they are either too small or don't have enough run space.

Rabbits are sociable animals and need to live with at least one bonded companion in an enclosure at least 3m x 2m in size. This will allow them to exhibit natural behaviours such as running, hopping and should be tall enough for them to stand tall on their hindlimbs.

This is the recommended size for one, single area and whilst tunnels, platforms and multi levels are great, they do not count towards this space.

A hutch is never enough and should never be the sole accommodation for a rabbit. Outdoor rabbits should always have access to a large, enclosed area to run, binky (skip) and forage and this should be accessible 24/7. Indoor rabbits need an enclosure of the same size but can also 'free range' given that they are supervised and measures have been taken to 'bunny-proof'.

We are thinking about creating a Holistic Health Plan at our practice alongside our conventional plan.

This may include faecal worm egg counts rather than prophylactic worming.

Blood testing for antibody titres for diseases usually vaccinated against and or vaccines should they need it.

It would be great to hear from our clients as to whether this is something you would be intetested in! If so - is there anything else you would like to be included in a holistic health plan?

Please comment below or private message us. We would love to hear from you! 🐱 🐶 🐰

Is it too hot to walk your dog?

As temperatures climb, it's important to be mindful of your dog's safety during walks.

More dogs die from hot walks than in hot cars. Your dog depends on you to make the right call. When in doubt, sit the walk out.

Typically, you can walk your dog at temperatures below 20°c. While most dogs are comfortable walking between 15°c and 25°c, individual factors like age, breed, coat type, and fitness level play a significant role in how well they tolerate the heat.

Check out the table below to see how your dog’s breed and health may affect their ability to handle the heat.
