It's that time of the year again when we are needing our warm clothes and jackets....But donโ€™t forget providing warmth is one of the most important things you can do for your dog inside and outside the home, helping to keep our fur babies joints and muscles nice and warm during the upcoming winter months.

๐Ÿฅถ Cold joints get stiff and sore. If your dog has arthritis it tends to be worse over winter when it's cold and damp. By keeping your dog warm you can help to alleviate some of the pain of arthritis.
When cartilage between your dogโ€™s joints degrades, this can cause painful swelling and stiffness. The simple act of moving, often becomes unbearable. Arthritis is more common in senior dogs, but it can affect dogs of all breeds and ages. So to reduce pain and help your dog feel more comfortable here are a few steps you can take as those temperatures drop.

๐Ÿฅถ Manage your dogโ€™s joint pain on walks by providing a warm dog jacket. Dog coats come in a range of sizes and include waterproof and windproof options. An ideal coat should be the correct size and well fitted to the individual dog. It needs to reach from the neck to the base of the tail and protect the chest, hips and abdomen.
Remember not to keep them outdoors in the cold for too long. Coats do not protect dogs from frostbites on ears, nose, tail, and paws.
โ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธ

๐ŸฅถNo matter the weather, your arthritic dog needs exercise throughout the winter to keep joints lubricated and moving. The ideal time to exercise dogs outdoors in the winter, is late morning to early afternoon, as this tends to be the warmest time of the day. Keep it low-impact and donโ€™t over do it. Take them on gentle shortwalks multiple times a day. Keep in mind that slippery ice, snow (if we get it ) and uneven surfaces are particularly tough on the joints of arthritic dogs, so only walk on cleared paths.

Due to reduced daylight hours in the winter it is a good idea to ensure your dogs are seen out on walks in reduced visibility. Fluorescent coats, high visibility leads and lights attached to the collar are just some of the ideas that will help ensure your dog is seen.

If the weather is too harsh to be outside, get your dog up to play and encourage them to move around the house.
Provide mental stimulation indoors by providing them with feeding enrichment or other activities to prevent boredom.

๐Ÿ’ก Did you know that 15minutes of mental stimulation equates to 1hour of physical exercise for dogs!

Here are some idea's below to help stimulate you dog;

Lick mats
Filled Kongs
Snuffle mats
Scatter feeding
Hide & seek games

๐Ÿ’กRemember to wash paws after every walk, especially if walking in areas where there is grit or salt, as this can be toxic to dogs if licking at paws and can cause burns to their pads.

โ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธ

๐ŸฅถColder temperatures and damp weather might make it harder for your pooch to get up and down or move around comfortably, especially overnight, try to warm them up by providing a pet-safe heated blanket or heating pad for them to sleep on. The little extra warmth may help encourage your dog to get up and move first thing in the morning! A warm towel over a radiator to dry your dog after their walk or a heat pad/hottie to drape across sore joints will come as a welcome relief.

โ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธโ„๏ธ

๐ŸฅถIn this cold, damp weather please don't forget to bring drying coats/ dressing gowns/jackets to put on your fur babies after each session at Gatehouse๐Ÿฅฐ

Gorgeous Rosie is always prepared when she comes for her Hydrotherapy sessions.
Doesnโ€™t she look cosy wrapped in her warm drying coat ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ

Kinesiology taping was primarily developed for use on humans, and is widely used by physio therapists, chiropractors, and personal trainers.

The idea behind taping is that it supports the tissue but moves with the body and does not restrict range of motion. It is often used to relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation and provide support to joints and muscles without restriction.

Over the years kinesiology taping has been successfully adapted for treating animals. It can effectively provide pain relief and improved mobility for pets with:
โ–ช๏ธArthritis
โ–ช๏ธPost-injury or surgery
โ–ช๏ธSprained muscles, tendons or ligaments

It can also activate or relax muscles, depending on its application. The elasticity, or stretchiness, of kinesiology tape allows for movement, and it doesnโ€™t restrict daily walks or activities although you should always be mindful of the injury ๐Ÿ˜…

Kinesiology can also improve body awareness (proprioception) as seen with our lovely and very complient Joey below..

The kinesiology tape you see across Joey's back has been applied from right to left to encourage loading through his left hindlimb and the tape placed down his leg is to improve his left hindlimb posture and muscle activation.๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸพMuscle loss in dogs can be detrimental and significantly impact physical health and quality of life. It is a common misconception that muscles grow back to normal size by themselves after injury or surgery. Unfortunately for the patients, this is just NOT always the case. โ˜น๏ธ

๐ŸพPhysiotherapy and Hydrotherapy can significantly improve the quality of muscle and build muscle mass safely and effectively, without the associated pressure and pain land based exercise may cause.

๐ŸพMuscle atrophy, or wastage, starts early on in the process of injury or disease. It may initially go unnoticed, If your dog becomes acutely lame or has surgery on a limb, the atrophy( muscle loss) will be more noticeable, more quickly.

๐ŸพMuscle atrophy occurs for a variety of different reasons. The main reason for muscle atrophy is disuse. If your dog has been limping and not using a limb then the muscles are used less than normal and atrophy results. This usually happens if they have had a mild injury, some arthritis, or are confined to cage rest after surgery or injury. We may see generalised disuse atrophy of the whole body in a dog that has prolonged restricted activity or crate rest. Muscle waste increases when disuse and pain are both present.

๐ŸพBecause dogs get around on 4 limbs, if they have a small amount of discomfort in a single limb, they can transfer weight around to unload the painful limb much easier than we can on only 2 limbs. In the early stages, this can go unnoticed. However, if on exam we palpate the limbs, we may find a difference in muscle size. This indicates some atrophy ( muscle waste) in the affected limb.

๐ŸพWe can address this with a specific structured rehabilitation program targeted to meet the individual needs of the patient.

๐ŸพWe do this through manual therapies, hydrotherapy and strengthening of specific muscles. The basis for the techniques chosen for each individual dog are our assessment findings. Through this, we are able to devised a tailored program for your pet. This must be done very carefully after surgery so as not to jeopardise healing and repair. When muscle strength and size fully restores, it is only then we should progress a canine patient back to regular exercise. This will give them the best chance for maximal recovery. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Wee Leo had been coming to us for treatment for IVDD and had been progressing well. Unfortunately due to a small relapse and subsequent period of crate rest Leo lost some muscle mass on his right hind limb as shown in the top picture. Now he is back on his feet we are seeing him for physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and electro therapy (pulsed magnetic therapy and laser) to further improve Leoโ€™s joint range of motion and hindlimb muscle strength. We are delighted with the progress Leo has made and you can see from the bottom picture how he has gained muscle with regular physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy sessions ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸปThe Importance of Maintaining Muscle Mass๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป๐Ÿถ

You will often hear us discussing building or maintaining your pets muscle mass. Muscles are crucial for a dog's ability to move, run, jump, and play. Muscle loss can result in decreased mobility and difficulty performing everyday activities.

๐Ÿพ Muscles provide essential support to a dog's skeletal structure. When muscles weaken, it can put more pressure on their joints, potentially leading to pain and arthritis.

๐Ÿพ Muscle tissue plays a role in metabolism, helping dogs maintain a healthy weight. Muscle loss can lead to weight gain and obesity, which can further exacerbate health problems.

๐Ÿพ Muscles store energy reserves, enabling dogs to be active and energetic. Muscle loss can lead to fatigue and a decrease in energy.

Muscle loss in dogs can be detrimental and significantly impact physical health and quality of life. It is a common misconception that muscles grow back to normal size by themselves after injury or surgery. Unfortunately for the patients, this is just NOT always the case. โ˜น๏ธ
