Working today with little Rocko French Bulldog x JRT.

Rocko has recently been rehomed via Dogs Trust and is having some issues around other dogs.

For our session today, we went to a public park with Rocko on a longline. We ensure he felt safe and secure by keeping our distance. We achived this by using a longer line and allowing him to make better choices. He did not bark or lunge at any dogs. Proud of him. He did so well.

“Master Trainer” Graeme Hall is back at it again…

The dog behaviour world, where ethics matter, is doing everything to remove this unqualified, reckless individual from our television screens. The most recent episode of Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly should shock everyone.

Before we get started, here is a petition. Please sign it - https://chng.it/625rhGK4Md

You can see my review on this show from a couple of years ago - https://www.cbtdogbehaviour.com/dogs-behaving-very-badly-a-review

Poor Ruby, an 8-year-old Labrador clearly arthritic and in pain. I feel such sorrow that this individual can go on national TV and be allowed a platform to peddle unethical, harmful misinformation. I am more determined than ever to rid ourselves of these types of “Maverick” dogs trainers. They are not maverick’s, they are cowboys. Plain and simple…

At no point throughout the episode did “Master Trainer” Graham Hall consider this could be a pain-related case. No, he missed it through lack of proper procedure. A veterinary check and referral should have been undertaken PRIOR to the consultation. This is how ethical trainers and behaviourists operate and quite rightly so. Ethics matter and our dogs deserve better than this.

Had Mr Hall adhered to some form of ethical guidelines, he could have established Ruby was in pain before even seeing her. That way, he would be informed on the underlying contributions to Ruby’s behaviour “issues”. This is not a dog being a “diva”, or “being stubborn”, this is a dog in pain and worried/anticipating painful and uncomfortable situations. I cringe at the clumsy lack of investigation and I’m furious about the misunderstanding and misapplication of behaviour. These labels tell us only how Mr Hall views behaviour, the lens of how he perceives dog’s behaviour, and it is profoundly out of sync.

Labels are not behaviour. They are concepts and abstractions. Terms like “stubborn” have no functional behaviour associated with it. What you might think is stubborn, I may see differently. Where Graham see’s stubbornness, I see pain and fear. The function of Ruby freezing and refusing to walk on lead is to avoid pain and discomfort. She is not refusing to comply, she is worried. If using a term like stubborn is bad, then terms like “diva”, “being the boss”, or “being a madam” are simply woeful and have no place at a behaviour consultation. These are not terms behaviourists use. They are labels and abstractions from a clumsy and unqualified individual.

Ruby’s owners were not “indulging” her. They were giving her a perfectly reasonable way of getting off the couch without having to land on a hard surface. Surely that is axiomatic or it would have been if some form of ethical guidelines were being adhered to. Sadly, this is not the case. I hold the producers and Channel 5 in as much contempt for continuing to platform this abhorrence of a TV show.

This should be the tipping point for Mr Hall. We need to keep the pressure on.

Here’s a few things you can do:

- Sign the petition

- Complain to Channel 5

- Stop watching the show

- Tell your friends not to watch it

If you are looking to hire a behaviourist or trainer, here are a few excellent organisations:

- APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors)

- IAABC (International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants)

- APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers)

- ABTC (Animal Behaviour & Training Council)

TV show’s significantly affect dog owners, in both their interpretation of their dogs behaviour, and their approach to dealing with problem or unwanted behaviour. There have been many examples of such shows in recent times.

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, I have tested positive with Covid and experiencing symptoms. I have to self isolate and will not be able to offer sessions for the next 10 days.

I look forward to getting back to offering sessions soon.

Love it when you make a breakthrough with a client! Georgie here was very nervous of getting in the car. For the last few weeks we have been working hard on making him feel safe and secure in the boot. We independently trained him to walk up the stairs confidently and to settle on cue. It’s taken a few weeks. Today, it paid off 👌🐶
