It has been a nice winter's day in Waterfoot. Indeed it has been like this for most of the last week with a dry east wind that is beginning to dry the ground out in preparation for spring.

Storm Eowyn

Hope you are all safe and not suffered too much damage.

We have still to fully walk round and check everything but we have lost three trees at the back of the mill. It felt like the strongest storm since January 1968 when we lost four trees.

The yellow meadow

Photo of the meadow taken this afternoon. There is still a covering of grass, albeit peppered with molehills, and it is firm underfoot but it has been scorched yellow by the recent cold weather. In the last couple of days, however, there seems to be a change in the air. Spring is getting closer. How are your fields doing?

Beginnings of a thaw

After a cold week, the air temperature has now crept up somewhat. As a thaw begins we see an interesting inverse effect on the bridge. Its stonework stays colder than the air and sucks a fresh coat of frost out the air, which sits like icing sugar on the stone.

Parade of planets over Waterfoot

At sunset this evening, we were treated to a parade of four planets in the skies over Waterfoot. The first photo shows the view looking east with Mars dominating. It appears white in the photo but to the naked eye it was distinctly red. Jupiter, not shown in the photo, was high in the east also. Turning to the south west, the waxing Moon and Venus are in conjunction as shown in the second photo. The image is slightly overexposed but that has allowed the whole lunar disc to be seen and not just the crescent. Finally, Saturn was also in the south western sky albeit not shown in this photo.

Sunny crisp morning in Waterfoot

After all the rain in the last few days, today is a change with a 10 degree temperature drop to -2 deg C. The river is running relatively full. You can see an interesting effect in this video of the spray at the base of the weir forming into a cloud that is nicely illuminated by the morning sun. Not quite Niagara but shades of it?!
