The neutering deadline for exempted XL bullies who were one or older on 31st January 2024 is fast approaching. โš ๏ธ

If your XL bully has not been neutered by the deadline and confirmation isnโ€™t received by Defra, your dog will no longer be exempt and could be seized by the police. ๐Ÿ˜ข

You only have a few weeks left, so we strongly advise you not to delay, as it could pose a significant risk.

Today is World Pet Memorial day and gives us an opportunity to honor the beloved pets that are no longer with us. Loneliness awareness week begins today which is hosted by a local charity in Bristol. For many people, having a pet is the only thing they have for company, and loneliness is becoming a real issue for many in this country. Dog walking can encourage us out and to chat to other dog walkers, so to support the idea of random acts of connection perhaps we can offer a smile or nod when out on our dog walks this week. Dental treats or chews, such as Virbac's VeggieDent chews - can be a good way to help clean your pet's teeth. Just like brushing, they need to be given daily or every other day to have much effect. Ensure that you are feeding the right size chew, and don't forget that while these are low fat treats, they still contain calories, so you may need to reduce their food allowance to avoid weight gain. The main benefit of chews are that they clean the teeth at the back of the mouth which are harder to reach with brushing.

Veterinary dental treatments โ€“ at your pet's annual health check, or if they are seeing the vet for any other reason, their mouth is examined, and the vet (or nurse) will advise you of their findings. They may recommend that you book the pet in for a full dental procedure. This is done under general anaesthetic, and involves the teeth being ultrasonically scaled, the mouth and throat examined in full, the teeth checked above and below the gumline using equipment such as dental probes and radiographs where needed, and the teeth being polished, as well as any extractions that might be needed. If this is carried out at an early stage, before any periodontal disease has progressed too far, it is less likely that teeth will be severely affected and need extraction. We brush our teeth twice daily, and still visit the dentist for an examination and scaling regularly, so we should really plan for most pets to have a full treatment under anaesthetic every few years. The better your home care, the less frequent these will need to be!

Brushing โ€“ brushing your petโ€™s teeth is the best way to prevent build up of tartar and bacteria. However, it needs to be done regularly. It takes about three days for plaque to harden and form into tartar, so brushing less often than this will be ineffective. Daily brushing is best of all, as it gives bacteria very little chance to cause damage. Using a pet toothpaste is important โ€“ they do not froth like human toothpastes, and do not contain fluoride, but do have enzymes which continue to work against bacteria after you finish brushing.

As much as we all enjoy making the most of the warm weather with a barbeque, itโ€™s important to remember our furry friends too ๐Ÿพ

Every year, our veterinary teams see pets that have got into a spot of accidental bother at a barbeque!

From heatstroke and sunburn to bin raids and broken glass, there are lots of hazards for pet owners to be mindful of โš ๏ธ

[Visual description: An infographic explaining BBQ safety for pet owners. Tips include: 1) Secure the garden - Ensure your garden is secure and safe for pets by making sure all fences are robust and there arenโ€™t any dangerous plants for them to reach. 2) Create a quiet space to de-stress - Set up a quiet room inside the house or in your garden where your pet can retreat. This space should be for your pets only, not your guests. 3) Beware of flamin' hot equipment - Hot food, coals and ashes can all cause serious burns. Once the cooking is complete, make sure the barbecue cools down properly. 4) Breathe easy - Smoke can be irritating for petsโ€™ lungs, especially as many have sensitive airways. Make sure they are far away from the barbecue and not downwind of any fumes. 5) Skip the scraps - Barbecue scraps can upset your pet's stomach and undercooked or fatty foods can make them very poorly. Remember to dispose of any leftover bones or corn cobs safely and securely. 6) Keep cool and be sensible in the sun - On warmer days, make sure your pet has a shady space where they can cool down. Remember to also apply pet-safe sunblock to your furry friend at least 15 minutes before they go outside. 7) Treat them too - Prepare a pet-safe snack to keep them entertained.]

This week is Garden Wildlife Week and the first wildlife garden was established nearly 100 years ago in 1925. Recognising this week is important for a number of reasons -

1) It is ecologically beneficial- wildlife gardening is ecologically beneficial to the environment. We love it for this!

2) It allows wildlife to move easily - wildlife gardening allows for easy wildlife migration in urban areas. See what you can do this week to contribute!

3) It allows wildlife populations to connect - wildlife gardening helps wildlife populations connect better. Read up on the different populations that live in your area and how they interact with each other.

๐Ÿ To help the bees during the summer months there are fewer flowers and other food sources for the bees.
Water is also scarce and so many bees drown as they try to drink from the pools.
๐Ÿ
Grate an apple and add some water to a bowl.
The bees will be able to get the sugars from the fruit and drink the water and not drown as they can stand on the pieces of fruit.
๐Ÿ
Bee populations are threatened, letโ€™s give them all the support we can๐Ÿ™ Thanks ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’—
