Cats versus Dogs ?

So we have been very busy for the past couple of months - we have got ourselves a puppy! Skylar has been an exhausting bundle of joy and wonder - ( and sometimes we wonder what on earth have we done!! Lol! ) . We had no idea how Pepper was going to react to another 4 legged friend in the house but she has really surprised us how calm and cool she has been about the new crazy arrival! We have introduced them slowly and made sure Pepper had plenty of elevated places to escape to if needed. At first she stayed upstairs ( not much change there tbh as she loves my teenage son's bedroom!) but it wasn't long before her curiosity got the better of her and she began to observe this strange hairy creature from a safe distance! Gradually she has got braver and is not phased at being on the ground as she knows she is far faster and more agile than this bumbling canine ! Then the other evening this happened - they fell asleep on the sofa next to each other! Note the slight look of disdain on Pepper's face ! But I am hopeful that this is the start of a friendship! Have you got cats and dogs that get on well together? How did you introduce them? I'd love to see photos of your feline-canine friendships!

MY FIRST CAT
So I have a confession to make - even though I have known many , many cats , looked after your cats and lived with friends who had cats , I have never had a cat of my own! That is until now ! So here she is - Pepper - my first kitty ! We adopted her from Glossop Cat Rescue in February and she has settled into our family wonderfully. We are relishing having her in our lives and she is lapping up all the love and attention ( all on her terms though of course , she is a cat after all!) She is playful and fun, spends a lot of time sleeping on my son's bed and is a real snuggle-pot - any excuse to plonk herself on your lap and demand fusses accompanied by her purrs! We have just recently started to let her outside and that has been a real learning curve for me ! Even though I have obviously had a lot of experience with cats it is a very different experience with my own ! I have had a lot of 'what if's' running through my mind - 'what if she doesn't come back', 'what if she doesn't like the other cats on the street', 'what if she goes back to her foster house!' to name a few! But Pepper has taken it all in her stride and is enjoying her new found freedom, though thankfully she has not gone far yet , though she gets more confident every day! We have not fitted a cat flap yet - so when we do that will be another 'first' for us - teaching her how to use it! Watch this space - I will let you know how it goes! In the meantime I would love to hear your stories about how you got your pets and how you and your pet dealt with all the 'first' experiences!

Hello and hope you are all coping well with this ongoing lockdown. It feels like ages since I saw any of your lovely pets and I'm really missing that feline company. I've been kept busy homeschooling my children for the last couple of months and just recently we were talking about how long it has been that humans have kept cats as pets . Worshipped as idols, used for pest control, kept for good luck or cherished as companions the relationship between cats and humans spans thousands of years . It's very difficult to document exactly when cat domestication came about . Until recently it was thought that the earliest evidence came from Egypt nearly 4,000 years ago. Egyptian art shows cats and humans together and mummified remains of cats from that era also indicate that cats had special significance in Egyptian society. However recent archaeological evidence of the human-feline bond - that of remains found of a human and cat buried together in a grave site in Cyprus nearly 10,000 years ago (my 10 year old son found that especially fascinating!) , predates that of the Egyptian connection by almost 5,000 years! and that's just what has been found so far - who knows how much further our connection with cats goes.
So when you think about how far back our friendship with cats goes then to me it's not surprising how right it feels for us to have them in our lives. It's like they are directly entwined into our heritage. I like to think that sharing our lives with animals is inherently part of what makes us human.
Looking forward to spending time with your pets again one day and feeling that connection again! Stay safe and don't hesitate to get in touch as soon as we are allowed to go on holidays again.

Keeping cosy this winter!
Hi hope you and your pets are well. We are having some cold weather at the moment aren't we?! and looks like more snow forecast tomorrow! Here's a few tips for keeping your pets warm and safe in the cold weather -
You might find that your pet wants to stay in more in the cold weather so try and make lots of extra snuggly safe places for them indoors . Older cats especially find it hard to maintain their body temperatures so they will need lots of warm cosy options to settle down in. You could increase their enrichment too to help with boredom busting if they are indoors more , such as playing more games with them or providing them with treat dispensers to keep them occupied. It's a good idea to provide litter trays if they don't normally have them as you might find they prefer to toilet indoors, save getting their little toes wet!
If they do still enjoy being outdoors when it's cold then you could provide some sort of shelter for them in the garden , even just a cat flap to give them access to a shed or garage would be good ( providing it's safe inside and any sharp tools are out of the way).
Keep an eye on their paws , especially when it's been snowing or icy - use a soft cloth to gently wipe them to remove any rock salt, chemicals or grit to prevent them from ingesting these harmful substances and to prevent any skin irritations.
Also be mindful of any hot hazards in the house , we may have our radiators on extra hot now it's colder so make sure you protect your cat from them , especially if they like sleeping on radiator beds. Make sure any open fires/wood burning stoves are safe and pet proof .
(And , as I'm a vet nurse, I must mention the dangers of anti freeze - my advice is please do not use it! It is very toxic to cats and other animals and wildlife).
Hope you all stay safe and warm - enjoy those extra snuggles if you kitties are staying indoors more!

The Cats Whiskers!

I'm always in awe of animals' whiskers! A cat's whiskers are amazing and not just to look at - they are one of their many feline super powers! Let me tell you more ....

Cat's whiskers, or 'Vibrissae' coming from the Latin 'Vibrio' meaning to vibrate, are incredibly sensitive to vibrations and any changes around them, They are directly attached to nerve endings in the brain - this is so different to the rest of the hairs on an animals body as whiskers have a direct connection to the brain and are therefore an integral part of a cat's body system.

Whiskers are not just on a cat's face - take a look at your cat - you'll find they have them on their chin, above their eyes, on their ears and on the backs of their forelegs.Whiskers everywhere!

Their whiskers are in direct proportion to the width of their bodies and are perfectly symmetrical. When the whiskers vibrate they send messages to the cat's brain to help them to judge distances and aid their spatial awareness at all times, day or night. This helps them to gage whether a space is big enough to let them fit through for example,or lets them know if there are any objects in their path even when the light is dim and without them even having to touch anything! A bit like having their very own built in tape measure on the move!
Then, like a radar detector, their whiskers can scan the area around them, sending messages directly to the cat's brain to let them know of any changes around it . Any change in the air currents might be a predator approaching for example. Or the whiskers might detect a vibration in the air to signal the movement of potential prey in the vicinity. This means that cats , along with their fantastic night vision, can move around stealth like and safely during the dead of night , hunting and exploring, their senses alive in all their feline glory!
See what I mean? - Feline Super Powers!! It's one of their many Super powers - I'll be exploring more of them soon !
Please feel free to post any photos showing off your cats amazing whiskers!
