New Arthritis treatment for dogs.

We are pleased to announce that in collaboration with Biobest Laboratories we are now able to offer autologous mesenchymal stem cell treatment. Stem cells have proven application in a range of joint and soft tissue injuries and the team at Stroud Road Vets will assess your pet carefully and discuss possible therapies before embarking on any treatment plan. If your dogs joints are causing a lot of pain or lameness which cannot be easily managed with conventional drugs or if your young dog has developed joint problems, stem cell therapy may be a good choice for long term management.
Please contact the surgery for more information or to arrange an appointment.

Biobest have been involved in the culture of mesenchymal stem cells since 2005 for vets deliverying stem cell therapy for dogs and horses.

URGENT MESSAGE.
We have had a positive case of leptospirosis in a dog from Gloucester. This bacteria can be spread between dogs via urine so we urge all owners to check your dogs are up to date with their lepto vaccines to ensure they are protected from this potentially fatal disease.
PLEASE SHARE.

Additional comment in response to comments below :

To be clear, our intention is not to scaremonger. It is up to each owner to decide if they want to vaccinate or not. We are sharing the fact that we have had a very poorly dog ( not up to date with vaccinations) who tested positive for Leptospirosis that is potentially transmissible to another unvaccinated dogs. Using a social media platform shares this information for people to act as they wish, please do not attack us for trying to do the right thing. Lab results only return with a positive for Lepto not the strain. This result and symptoms presented show the strain in question is one that causes severe illness in dogs.

This is Jack:
He is a border terrier pup who just wasn't thriving; he was quiet and subdued.
Urine and blood tests showed high bile acids indicating a porto-systemic shunt (a congenital defect where a blood vessel directs the blood into general circulation rather than going through the liver for "cleaning"). This condition causes products of digestion to build up in the body causing brain depression and poor growth.
Surgical treatment is very complex as finding and tying off the "rogue" vessel is technically very difficult.
Referral veterinary centres will charge about Β£7000 pounds to try and fix it but with no guarantees.
As referral wasn't an option, the surgery was carried out by Michael here at Stroud Road Vets and the abnormal blood vessel was identified and successfully tied off. Subsequent tests show that no lasting damage has occurred and his liver is now functioning normally.
Jack started to pick up after a couple of days and over the next few weeks has transformed into a happy puppy; playing and eating well.
He's become a bit of a favourite with our team!

We are really pleased to officially introduce the newest member of our nursing team. Claire qualified in 2008 and has worked most of her career with Erika, Michael and Lauren; so it feels great to have her back with us. She is a great asset to our caring, knowledgeable team. When she's not in work she can be found in the gym, walking Teddy her Labrador, cuddling Crumble, her ginger tom or at the poolside, supporting her sporty sons.
Welcome Claire!

We are pleased to announce that we are now part of the Cats Protection Neutering Scheme. Over the past 2 years, whilst working with two local cat charities we have seen far too many stray and feral tom cats and pregnant/nursing females, often in a poor state of health.
Under this CP scheme, eligible owners and people looking after a stray can access the scheme and have the cat neutered and microchipped for Β£10.

Please see the link below.

Are you looking for cat neutering near you? We support thousands each year with our financial assistance schemes and regional campaigns.

This morning a kind lady found this poor Tawny owl dangling from a barbed wire fence near Pound Farm Shop and managed to rescue it and brought it to us.
We managed to remove the wire embedded in its wing and repaired its wounds
Happily RSPCA Oak and Furrows collected it very quickly to help look after it until it heals

We are pleased to announce we can now provide LASER THERAPY for your pets.
Class 4 lasers are used in a wide variety of situations to help with pain and to assist with healing.
They can act as a drug free alternative or adjunct for managing arthritis or muscular pain but are also very good in helping wounds to heal , reducing post operative pain and for chronically painful gum disease in cats.
Treatment is usually done conscious or at the time of surgery and is very well tolerated.
Please call if you would like more information about laser therapy in your pet.

It's been a busy year here at Stroud Road and we were reflecting upon the many cases we have seen.
Little Lola stands out as our patient of the year. She, and her devoted owners had a difficult and worrying summer. In July, Lola presented with a fever which, over the coming weeks developed into peritonitis and later into a massive abscess on her spine. It was suspected that a foreign body was to blame for making her so ill but finding it proved very difficult.
She endured blood tests scans, scans, xrays, two surgeries (exploratory abdominal surgery, and one to remove and explore an external abscess) both did not reveal the cause of infection. The last hope was to place a drainage tube into the site to help her body expell the foreign material.
Hope for Lola was fading but 8 weeks after her initial visit her relieved and excited owners called to say that a grass seed had discharged from the site.
Well done to brave Lola and her lovely family. Things were touch and go there for a while.

Willow was found injured near her home and was subsequently referred to us from another practice to repair a comminuted distal fracture of her fibula. We applied a 6 pin unilateral external fixator to keep the fracture stable to allow healing. She was kept inside by her owners but was allowed to walk around inside to keep mobility and muscle mass. After 8 weeks the bones had healed and the metal work was removed.

Beautiful Obi was brought into us after catching his leg whilst up to mischief at home. Xrays revealed a comminuted spiral fracture. We applied a unilateral external fixator for 4 weeks after which his young bones had healed and the fixator was removed. He has made a full recovery and all credit to his owners who had to keep this lively chap quiet and resting for a month!
