A muzzle doesn’t define a dog, they are a training aid, not a sign of a dog to be feared, pitied, or hidden away. They are a sign of a responsible guardian doing the best for their four legged pal.
A dog can be muzzled for all kinds of reasons, not just aggression. Maybe they eat things off the ground, play too rough, overcorrect, maybe they need to learn better social skills, or maybe they want to eat rabbits and squirrels. Maybe they have a bite history, maybe they wear one to prevent this. A muzzle can even be for the human more than the dog as it allows them to feel more confident and brave situations they would have previously avoided.
It goes without saying that a muzzle is not a breed specific tool. Nor should they make a dog ‘miserable’ or be seen that way. Muzzled dogs can have so much more freedom and their quality of life greatly increased because they have this precaution in place.
A muzzle is like a seatbelt, you don’t plan on crashing but better to be safe than sorry right? You wouldn’t judge or make assumptions about someone for wearing a seatbelt. These owners are choosing safety and precautions, setting their dogs up for success, being proactive and putting in a lot of work! Muzzle training and desensitisation doesn’t happen overnight, but is a vital part of responsible dog ownership - whether you use it or not!
I’m incredibly glad that I had muzzle trained pilot long before we needed it. Even if we had never ended up using it I’m glad we’ve always had it as a backup option.
For those who don’t know, pi is currently on a pain trial (lots of meds!) which have made him not quite himself. Rather than avoiding walks with other dogs, hiding him away, or resorting to on lead walks when we’ve worked sooo hard for off lead freedom, I have chosen to simply pop his muzzle on when we go out to play. For as long as I feel we need to. As you can see this has not affected his happiness! He can drink, take treats, run around, play with his friends safely, and live a normal life. As can Atty! Although these two wear muzzles for different reasons, the lesson is the same. Muzzled dogs are good dogs, happy dogs, healthy dogs, free dogs, with good owners who love them dearly 🥰

Incase you hadn’t noticed… it’s hot! Far too hot to be risking taking any woofers out for walks. All walks today will be replaced with quick drop in visits for toilet breaks and water refreshing - I will not risk heatstroke! Keep your furry babies safe in this heat 🐾 ☀️
