Please Stay Safe Today, Cheltenham! ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿพ

Today's going to be a scorcher with temperatures set to reach 29ยฐ! Keep your furry friends safe with these hot weather tips:

๐Ÿก Provide Shade & Fresh Water: Ensure your pets have a cool spot to relax and plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated.
๐ŸŒ… Cooler Walks: Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it's cooler outside.
๐Ÿ• Avoid Hot Pavements: Hot pavement can burn paws. Test the pavement with your handโ€”if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!
๐Ÿš— Never Leave Pets in Vehicles: Don't leave pets in cars, caravans, conservatories, or outbuildings, even for a short time.
๐ŸŒž Sun Protection: Prevent sunburn on ear tips and noses with pet-safe sunscreen.

Stay cool and safe, Cheltenham! ๐ŸงŠ๐Ÿ’ฆ

As the warmer weather approaches, with temperatures set to reach 26ยฐC in Cheltenham and across the UK within the next few days, we know we say it often... but it can't be said often enough!

Dogs Die in HOT CARS ๐Ÿšจ

Because we can't say it often enoughโ€ฆ
Please help spread the word!

Many people still believe that it's okay to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they're parked in the shade, but the truth is, it's still a very dangerous situation for the dog.

A car can become uncomfortably hot very quickly, even when it doesn't feel that warm. When it's 22ยฐC outside, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47ยฐC within the hour. (RSPCA)

NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT CAR

Just a 2ยฐC increase in a dogโ€™s body temperature is all it takes for heat stroke to begin. Fatalities can occur in as little as 15 minutes. Studies show opening the windows has little effect on temperature, and cars left in the shade can also heat up to dangerous levels.

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ”ฅ It can take as little as 15 minutes for a dog to die of heat stroke.

Let's keep our furry friends safe this summer:

โœ… Keep them safe
โœ… Keep them cool
โœ… Keep them happy

Arvonia Vets - Caution: Stinging Insects

Stinging insects, including bees and wasps, pose a risk to pets by potentially causing allergic reactions. Dogs may come across these insects during their outdoor activities, while cats, with their curious nature, might get stung on their paws, faces, or even inside their mouths when attempting to catch them.

Indicators that your pet may have been stung:
๐Ÿ Licking or chewing a specific area
๐Ÿ Increased vocalizations or unusual noises
๐Ÿ Swelling in a particular spot (especially hard to detect in breeds with long hair)
๐Ÿ Scratching or pawing at the affected area
๐Ÿ Limping or hesitating to put weight on a paw

Most pets can handle bee stings with minor issues, but some might experience allergic reactions leading to anaphylactic shock. Signs of a severe reaction include difficulty breathing, vomiting, or excessive drooling. In these cases, immediate veterinary care is critical.

Tick Bite Prevention Week โ€“
March 24-30, 2024 โš ๏ธ๐Ÿชฒ
Protect Your Furry Friends
It is imperative to protect your pets, as they can easily become carriers of ticks. By protecting your pets from ticks, youโ€™re invariably protecting yourself.
Tick Bite Prevention Week is observed every year from March 24 to 30. It brings to light the precarious health disaster ticks can cause. Did you know that around 3,000 people a year get infected with Lyme disease as a result of a tick bite? Lyme disease can be contracted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. Typical symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, fatigue, and difficulty in thinking, which can persist for six months or more. Untreated Lyme disease can spread to other parts of the body in several months and can cause arthritis and even nervous system problems.

Puppy Love Alert! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ
Wilma and Patrick Take Over Arvonia Vets Cheltenham

At Arvonia Vets Cheltenham, we had some very special visitors this week โ€“ Wilma the mini dachshund and Patrick the chihuahua! These two puppies stole the hearts of our entire team with their adorable and playful personalities.

Not only did they bring us a lot of joy, but they also came in for their very first puppy packs. Our puppy packs are designed to ensure that your new furry family member receives the best start in life. We understand that welcoming a new puppy into your home can be overwhelming, which is why we have created a comprehensive pack that covers all their essential healthcare needs.

The first and second routine vaccinations are an essential part of your puppyโ€™s health and wellbeing. It helps protect them against common contagious diseases. By vaccinating your puppy, you are not only protecting them but also helping to prevent the spread of these diseases to other dogs in the community.

As part of our puppy packs, we also offer four weeks of free Petplan insurance. This gives you peace of mind that your puppy is covered for any unexpected accidents or illnesses during their first few weeks in their new home. Pet insurance can be a lifesaver when it comes to unexpected vet bills, and we highly recommend investing in it for your puppyโ€™s long-term health.

To ensure that your puppy is in good health, our team of experienced vets will conduct a full health examination during their first visit. This includes checking their eyes, ears, teeth, heart, and overall body condition. If there are any concerns, our vets will be able to provide you with the right advice and treatment.

Microchipping is another vital aspect of our puppy pack. A microchip is a small device inserted under the skin that contains a unique identification number for your puppy. This number is then added to a national database, making it easier to identify your puppy if they ever get lost. It is a quick and painless procedure that can provide you with peace of mind knowing that your puppy can be traced back to you if they were to wander off.

Keeping your puppy free from fleas and worms is crucial to their health and wellbeing. Thatโ€™s why we include three months of flea and worm treatment in our puppy pack. We will also provide you with the correct dosage and frequency to ensure your puppy is protected against these pesky parasites.

We also offer a 10% discount on neutering for puppies included in our puppy pack. We recommend getting your puppy neutered as it can prevent unwanted litters and reduce the risk of certain health conditions.

To make sure that your puppy is developing correctly, we also offer a six-month health check as part of our puppy pack. This allows us to monitor their growth, detect any potential health issues, and provide you with the right advice for their ongoing care.

Additionally, each puppy pack includes a starter bag of food and a toy, as well as other items to help get your puppy settled into their new home. We understand that transitioning to a new environment can be stressful for puppies, so we want to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible for them.

At Arvonia Vets Cheltenham, we are dedicated to providing the best care for your new puppy. Our puppy packs are designed to give them the best start in life and provide you with peace of mind knowing that they are receiving the essential healthcare they need. If you have recently welcomed a new puppy into your family, contact us today to book their first puppy pack appointment. We canโ€™t wait to meet your furry bundle of joy!

Remember to keep your elderly pets warm...๐Ÿงฃ๐Ÿพ

Let's not forget about our furry companions who may need some extra TLC during this chilly weather. Our beloved elderly pets require special attention and care during the winter monthsโ€ฆ

it's important to remember to keep our elderly pets warm and comfortable. Just like humans, as our pets age, their bodies become less able to regulate their temperature, making them more susceptible to the cold.

One of the easiest ways to ensure your elderly pet stays warm is by providing them with an extra blanket or two to snuggle up in. This will not only keep them warm, but also provide them with a sense of security and comfort. Make sure to choose blankets that are soft, cozy, and washable for easy maintenance.

Another way to keep your elderly pet warm is by investing in a coat or sweater for them to wear on walks. Just like humans, pets lose body heat through their extremities, so a well-fitted coat can help keep their body heat in and protect them from the chilly weather. It's important to choose a coat that fits properly and is made of warm, insulating material.

In addition to providing extra warmth, it's also important to be mindful of your elderly pet's overall health during the winter. Cold temperatures can exacerbate arthritis and other joint issues, so it's a good idea to chat to us about any supplements or pain management options that may help keep your pet comfortable. If your pet is experiencing stiffness or difficulty getting around, consider providing them with a warm and cushioned bed to rest on.

It's also important to keep your elderly pet's immune system strong during the winter. Just like humans, pets are more susceptible to illnesses during colder months. Make sure to keep your pet up to date on vaccinations and continue routine wellness checks.

Itโ€™s important to remember that our elderly pets require extra care and attention during the colder months. Providing them with additional warmth, monitoring their overall health, and keeping them active and engaged can help ensure a happy and comfortable winter season for our beloved furry companions.

Stay warm and take care!

If your Christmas tree is a real one, please take care to sweep or vacuum the surrounding area regularly, fallen pine needles can get stuck between your petโ€™s toes or in their foot pads โ€“ and become seriously uncomfortable and painful.

Tis the Season! Itโ€™s Poinsettia time! ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒบ
Did you know that Poinsettia plants can make your dog poorlyโ€ฆ

Although Poinsettias are a type of euphorbia (a family of plants known to be poisonous), the effects of this particular plant are usually only mild. Its milky white sap is an irritant that can cause dogs to dribble, be sick or sometimes have diarrhoea. Although these effects are usually only mild, itโ€™s still best to keep these festive plants out of paws reach.

Common signs to watch for if your dog has consumed poinsettia:
Drooling
Licking lips
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Skin irritation (including redness, swelling, and itchiness)
Eye irritation

Holly Berries are Toxic โš ๏ธ
The berries of the holly plant are toxicโ€”not only to dogs, but also to other animals and children. These berries remain attached to the plant while itโ€™s still fresh, but as the plant dries, the berries loosen and may fall off your dรฉcor and onto the floor. From there, your dog can easily pick them up if he/she happens to mistake them for a treat. This is one of the reasons why holly decorations should be kept outside, if used at all.

If your dog does ingest the berries of a holly plant, he/she is likely to recover, but itโ€™s going to be a difficult recovery. Older dogs, dogs with underlying health conditions, and young puppies may be more at risk for fatal reactions from holly poisoning, but all dogs are going to suffer at least some of the physical responses caused by this plant.

Welcome to Churchdown Veterinary Centre

Churchdown veterinary centre is the sister branch to Arvonia cheltenham veterinary centre. Arvonia was established in 1980 by Guy Mewha-Williams. Churchdown opened in January 2013 on Monday the 13th.

Churchdown vet centre is located in the former police station opposite Tescoโ€™s on Cheltenham Road East. Here at the branch we host scheduled regular referral ophthalmology clinics that are run by RCVS Veterinary Ophthalmologist John Mould MRCVS.

We take pride in our service that we offer to our clients, Churchdown being the sister branch to Arvonia means that our family just keeps extending and we do feel like our clients are part of the family. We have a fantastic team of Nurses, support staff and receptionists at both of our practices and their dedicated service is one of the best.

We also support our troops by giving discount to members of the armed forces on a number of services.
