Border Collies are bred to be working dogs however many end up in pet homes. This can work out well for some but ends in disaster for others.

Just because a Border Collie may have been bred from a pet Border Collie or a show line Border Collie doesn't mean it won't have the same working instincts. Yes research has shown that working line Border Collies are more impulsive than pet counterparts BUT they are still a Border Collie with the same instincts.

The majority of training and behaviour issues that I see with Border Collies are because this has been misunderstood and what is driving their behaviour is what the breed was intentionally bred for. They are not bad dogs but simply need to be understood.

A Border Collie can be an amazing companion and they excel at sport and many activities. They love to train and need generally more exercise and mental training than some other breeds. If they get bored they can be destructive and go self employed. If you don't give them jobs to do then they will happily find their own, and you might not approve of their choices!

While some Border Collies are easy to live with and handle these unicorns are not the norm. Many love to chase anything that moves whether that be cyclists, cars, joggers, hoovers or anything with wheels. They are extremely sensitive to pressure and so can be reactive. They are bred to be sensitive and some find urban environments stressful and can develop noise sensitivity or repetitive behaviours such as shadow chasing.

They are a genius breed though and with the right training and understanding can excel. If you want to learn more about how to train your Border Collie then sign up for our free training starting tomorrow Nov 25th

Remember to stick to early morning or late evening dog walks when it's hot. Sometimes it's safer to miss the walk altogether šŸ„µ

Taking your dog on a walk or to places with little or no shade can be fatal during summer. It's important for dog owners to rememberā€¦ If in doubt, DONā€™T go out!

Heat-related illnesses in dogs are severe and can lead to organ failure, brain damage and even death šŸ’”
