49 years later, this remains one of the most iconic sports photographs in American history.

Depicting an astounding 31 lengths ahead of the field in the Belmont Stakes as jockey Ron Turcotte glances at the teletimer confirming their record pace, this dramatic image captured by Bob Coglianese of the New York Racing Association is as awe-inspiring today as it was on that June day in 1973.

49 years ago today: The official finish line photo of the June 9, 1973 Belmont Stakes shows Secretariat in full powerful stride, all four feet off the ground as his nose hits the wire. Jockey Ron Turcotte at that very instant is looking to his left towards the infield timer clock knowing he is a part of a special ride -- one that would shatter the track record and world record in a mind-boggling time of 2:24 for the mile-and-a-half distance.

Even more extraordinary is the full field view of the finish, with the next closest contender, Twice A Prince, a distant 31 lengths behind Secretariat. Take a look at the eye-popping full perspective of the race finish: https://tinyurl.com/BelmontFinish-FullFieldView

Official finish line photos are unique in that they show the mirror image of the horse for maximum viewing perspective. See more finish line image crops from this unforgettable day in Thoroughbred horse racing history: https://tinyurl.com/BelmontFinishLine

When I was studying under Australian reining and cow horse trainer Ian Francis, he used to remind me that there are a lot of heroes in the graveyard. What he meant by that was that too many people get on horses that aren’t ready to be ridden and get bucked off. They don’t use their heads. Preparation is the key.

Groundwork exercises are designed so that you can get control of your horse’s feet on the ground before getting in the saddle where you have less control. Remember, there’s no shame in getting off your horse if you’re having problems or if you feel unsafe. The horse only “wins” if you get off and put him away, not if you get off and move his feet.

It’s much better to fix a problem from the ground than be in the saddle wishing you were on the ground. Earn your horse’s respect and get him to use the thinking side of his brain on the ground. Then get on his back. You only get one body – take care of it. - Clinton

The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not 'get over' the loss of a loved one, you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again, but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same, nor would you want to.
