It's important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language to tell if they're starting to feel uncomfortable. Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite ⚠️

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder. Find out more: 👉 http://pdsa.me/055R

At this time of year, posts circulating around social media regarding rapeseed are shared extensively and understandably worry many dog owners. The posts usually state that rapeseed is highly poisonous to dogs, and can cause signs including haemolytic anaemia, blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders and breathing problems.

These posts are misinformation. The signs mentioned are only seen in grazing animals, and most dogs remain asymptomatic after exposure to rapeseed. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset if they have ingested some of the plant, and there have been reports of skin reactions which resemble burns, but this is extremely rare and does not happen to every dog which comes into contact with it.

💰 Carbohydrates are less expensive than meat, so pet food manufacturers love to use more carbs.

In order to get kibble to actually stick into a nicely shaped piece of food, it must have a glue to hold it together. That glue is a carbohydrate of some sort (potatoes, corn, peas, lentils, wheat, soy, tapioca, rice), so kibble is always going to be high in carbohydrates, usually averaging 40 to 60%. Unfortunately, the pet food companies don't make it easy for you to know how much carbohydrate is actually in the kibble because they are not required to list that on the bag. They list protein, fat, fiber, and moisture content.

🐱Cats are obligate carnivores and would only eat about 5% carbohydrates in their natural diet.

🐶 Dogs can eat more carbohydrates than cats, but are still designed to be meat eaters. Dr. Conor’s quote highlights one powerful example (his book contains many more 🤯)

❌ Excess carbohydrate consumption can lead to chronic inflammatory conditions like diabetes, obesity, pancreatitis, arthritis, and IBD.

An amazing book on debunking the raw vs kibble debate is Feeding Dogs by Dr Conor Brady. I highly recommend purchasing it!

Please can we thank all veterinary professionals for recommending Animal PoisonLine to their clients. Please can we remind you that the Animal PoisonLine telephone number (01202 509000) is not the same as the Veterinary Poisons Information Service's number (0207 305 5055).

Animal PoisonLine is run by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) and is the only 24-hour specialised emergency telephone service in the UK dedicated to helping pet owners who are worried their pet may have been exposed to something harmful or poisonous.
It is a triage service, which will let owners know if a trip to their vet is required. Based on the information the owner provides our vets and scientists will be able to tell the owner if they need to attend the vet.
The lines are open 24 hours a day.
Vets should continue to use the normal number 0207 3055 055 for their poisoning cases and admin enquiries. If owners call this number they will be directed to the Animal PoisonLine number 01202 509 000.

If you would like to order magnets, pet tags, posters or leaflets with the Animal PoisonLine number on for your clients please email [email protected]

The dreaded ragwort is flowering now and is easy to spot. It is also starting to go to seed, so any not removed posthaste will spread through its wind-borne seeds.

The safest way to remove it from horse pastures is to pull or dig it up, hopefully getting all the roots at the same time. Wear gloves and a face mask to protect yourself from the sap and pollen. Gather it into re-used feed bags and put the plants flowers down, roots up, to avoid inadvertently spreading seeds. Put pulled plants straight into the bags – don’t carry them around as this risks spreading seeds.

Once you have collected your ragwort, get rid of it. Take it to the local tip or burn it straight away, but don’t just leave it. It will continue to develop seeds even though you pulled it up and the seeds will spread far and wide on the breeze. Absolutely ensure that no animal can get near it, as once pulled up, it becomes palatable but no less poisonous. Ragwort poisoning builds up over the horse’s life, gradually destroying its liver.

With the warmer weather ahead, owners should be mindful of the signs of heatstroke. 🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious illness that develops when a dog gets too hot and is unable to lower its temperature. Left untreated, heatstroke can lead to seizures, organ failure and even death.

Any dog can develop heatstroke, but overweight, young, elderly, flat-faced, giant-breed, and thick-coated dogs are particularly at risk, even from just sitting out in hot weather.

Some of the most common triggers for heatstroke include:
🥵 Overheating during exercise - accounts for 74% of cases
☀️ Being outside in hot weather (even just sitting still) - accounts for 12.9% of cases
🚘♨️ Being trapped in a hot car - accounts for 5.2% of cases

See advice from our vets on what you can do to help prevent or provide first aid for heatstroke: http://pdsa.me/hpSh

🧊 Please note that ice cubes are perfectly safe for dogs to use as a treat to cool down on a hot day. It is when a dog is suffering from heatstroke that the drastic change in temperature from the ice can cause shock, and therefore should be avoided. A dog’s normal body temperature is around 38.6°C (101.5°F).
