Due to the unpredictability of the British weather, housing can often become too warm. Therefore, it can be beneficial to clip them to keep them cool, comfortable & reduce the risk of disease.
Animals who overheat use energy to cool down, that would otherwise be used elsewhere including milk yields and growth. Clipping can also reduce the risk of pneumonia.
Dairy cows can also benefit from their tails clipping to improve udder health and hygiene therefore reducing the risk of mastitis!

Last week we held our final sheep meeting of 2024, focussing on ectoparasites, haemonchus and worming strategies for the year.
🐑 It was great to have a discussion on everyone's approach to treatments and prevention strategies.

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸? – 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀! 🐮
🥶During cold weather, calves re-direct energy away from growth and immune function to maintain their body temperature. The temperature the calf feels is a combination of temperature, airspeed, and humidity. Lower critical temperature (LCT) is the temperature below which a calf needs extra energy to keep warm.
🧥 Along with adding extra bedding and calf jackets to help them keep warm, you should alter the feeding
𝑵𝒆𝒘𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒐 3 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒈𝒆:
- Calves less than 3 weeks old are the most vulnerable to temperature changes
- The LCT for calves of this age is 10-15°C and depends on airspeed
- For each 5°C temperature drop below 15°C you must feed an extra 50g/day of milk replacer, or 0.33L/day of whole milk
- Make sure water buckets are not frozen as calves need continuous access to water.
𝑪𝒂𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒔 3 𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒔 𝒐𝒍𝒅 +:
- The LCT for this age group is 5-10°C and is highly dependent on airspeed
- For each 5°C temperature drop below 10°C you must feed an extra 50g or milk replacer, or 0.33L/day of whole milk
- Calves must have continuous access to starter concentrates and water.

🐮 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 - 𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁! 🐮
💉Calf pneumonia vaccines are very effective at reducing the number of calves that get pneumonia and also the severity of disease in calves that are affected by pneumonia after vaccination.
✅ By keeping sheds filled with vaccinated cattle rather than unvaccinated cattle, we develop a protective level of population immunity which significantly reduces the risk of having a disease outbreak.
⏰ Intranasal vaccination of calves allows us to vaccinate early and is a great way of creating stable groups of vaccinated calves in a short period of time.
