Adders are warming up... 🐍 🌞
As the weather heats up, it’s crucial for all dog owners to be mindful of adders, the UK’s only native poisonous snake. Adders emerge from hibernation in spring and pose a risk to dogs during the warmer summer months. These snakes generally only bite in self-defence, such as when accidentally stepped on or approached by a curious dog.
Adder bites can be serious, causing symptoms like lameness, vomiting, and changes in heartbeat, blood pressure, and breathing. They are commonly found in dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands, and woodland edges.
If your dog is bitten, look for a dark-coloured swelling that can worsen rapidly. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Reach out to your nearest vet without delay, they will refer your pet to us if they need extra support...
Let’s keep our pets safe this summer!
