With Christmas fast approaching, it is a good idea to plan ahead for your cat's emotional wellbeing over the festive period.
All cats are different, some are outgoing and happy with visitors, yet others have a tendency to be more nervous and stressed at any change or new people in their homes.
It's good practice to provide a safe and quiet area of the home for cats to retreat to over the festive season. Whether this is a quiet bedroom, or even a little nook in a corner of a room, away from any visitors that may make a cat feel uncomfortable. Make sure that food, water and litter trays are placed in these private areas too.
Cat trees and cat-shelves are also good, because a cat feels safe when she climbs up high. Even a cardboard box in a wardrobe, with the door left ajar, will give the cat a 'safe space ' they can retreat to if they feel anxious.
Try to keep to your cats normal routine of feeding times and remember that a Feliway plug-in can make a big difference to your cats sense of well being.
Happy Christmas to you and your beloved feline friends. ☺️😺

Would you like support when introducing a new cat to your home ?
Are you moving house and concerned about how your cat will cope with this big change ?

If you decide to get another cat or kitten, it is very important that they are introduced slowly and gradually.
The resident cat will feel very put out and anxious, if a new cat is suddenly put in his home. He will feel that his territory is being invaded and he may even attack the newcomer.
I have recently seen quite a few cats being given away on selling sites because they were introduced too quickly and the resident cat is displaying aggression towards the newcomer.
Introducing new cats to each other needs to be done gradually and in stages, in order to minimise stress on both parties.
Please contact me for advice and support.

A good thing about buying 2 sibling kittens, is that they can form strong attachments that continue into adulthood.
It's lovely to see 2 bonded cats mutually grooming.
(Yes, they have taken over the dog's bed.)
Hi, if you have a cat with a behavioural problem such as litter box issues, over-grooming , spraying or furniture scratching I would be happy to help.
I can also advise on new cat introductions, environmental enhancement for indoor cats and I have a special interest/experience in multi- cat households and cats that have been through trauma ( anxiety or fear aggression).
Please get in contact for further information.
Multi-Cat households CAN work out ok, but it is essential to have plenty of provisions for their individual needs.
If you own more than 1 cat and would like some assistance in any way, including any behavioural problems, please get in contact 😊

Our dear, sweet 'Winnie' has just seen our vet and her mouth is healing really well.🥰
So.... How has her behaviour changed since she feels better.....? 🤔
Our beauty queen is now a very happy cat!
-She is very, very affectionate towards me, laying on me and purring loudly every evening.✔️
- She is back to living in harmony with our other cats, no more slapping or hissing at them.✔️
- Her appetite is really good, she is enjoying her food and no longer anxious when eating.✔️
-She is back to grooming herself thoroughly for hours on end.✔️
- She has started playing and running around again.😄 The other night, I was in the bathroom and Winnie got in the empty bath and started jumping on the the spot, twisting and turning and then rolling around in delight...✔️
It is lovely to see her happy again 😺
It just goes to show how pain and illness can cause behaviour changes.
5 days post-surgery and our Winnie is back to her quiet, gentle self. No more hissing or slapping the other cats and to be honest, I have never known her to eat so much !!!
Teeth removal for severe Gingivitis/Stomatitis may be daunting and worrying, but it's the best option long term and we just have to trust our veterinary surgeon and follow their advice for after-care.
Thankyou Medivet Gravesend
Cats find the scent of their owner very comforting and reassuring. This is one of the reasons they enjoy laying on our laps or sleeping on our beds.
Despite being referred to as independent creatures, cats do see their owner as their protector and source of safety/security !
Following her surgery yesterday, Winnie was distressed and anxious and found comfort laying in her litter box !
I managed to coax her out ( never force a cat if they are nervous), by getting one of my worn, unwashed jumpers ( bright orange 😜), turning it inside out so that my scent is stronger and placing it in a cosy place.
Winnie is much more relaxed today and not only is sitting/laying on my worn jumper, she wants to eat there too !!!
A cat's sense of smell is almost as powerful as a dogs. Scent is a VERY important part of their world and so are WE !!
Our dear Winnie is having her surgery today to remove all her lower teeth.
I have set aside a spare room for her, so she can have some peace and quiet and 1-1 attention whilst she recovers.
She will need to have her food mashed for a while, as her mouth heals, but in time her gums will harden and she will be able to eat normally again.
See you later, beautiful girl ❤️😘
Our Winnie has been on antibiotics and steroids since her last vets visit and is feeling much better.
She is all ready for her mouth surgery later on next week to remove all her lower teeth. Her upper teeth were removed previously due to recurrent Gingivitis, which resolved the problem with her sore upper gums, but the Gingivitis then started to effect her lower gums , which caused her pain and this affected her behaviour. Our usual sweet and placid cat, became withdrawn and started slapping our other cats and hissing at them. She also became anxious when she was eating, so I took her to our vet, who confirmed that the Gingivitis had returned and was causing her pain.
Now that she is feeling better, her sweet, loving ways have returned to normal
We love you Winnie and hope you heal quickly and easily after your surgery next week 😘😘 ❤️
It is always a good thing to have a vet that you trust and we are thankful for our veterinary surgery Medivet Gravesend for their care and dedication to their clients.
Our dear, sweet rescue cat 'Winnie' has had problems with Gingivitis which causes very sore and painful gums.
Last year her upper teeth were removed, as her upper gums kept becoming inflamed and painful, and the surgery really helped her.
Very recently Winnie has become more withdrawn, she did not want to be petted and she is usually a very affectionate cat ! She would hiss and run away when we stroked her and she started swiping at our other cats and our dog, when they walked past. She became very fussy about eating and appeared anxious when she ate.
Today I took Winnie to our vet and the Gingivitis is now affecting her lower gums. They have become very sore and the pain from the Gingivitis is making her unhappy. She has been given treatment and is booked in to have all her lower teeth removed soon, which should hopefully help her long term.
💥 It is ALWAYS very important to get your cat checked out by a vet, if they have a change in their behaviour.💥
I'm sure that our Winnie will be back to her sweet, affectionate self again once she is feeling better. 😺
My dad always had a natural bond with cats. He used to say to me that cats do communicate with us and we just have to realise what it is they are saying !
Our Sapphire definitely 'communicates' with me, when she has had enough of me grooming her......🤭
