Shorne Woods Country Park

Autumn pond work has begun in the park. Each autumn the rangers clear trees that are shading out the ponds. A build up of leaf litter and lack of life can reduce the biodiversity value of a pond and ultimately lead to the loss of a pond to wet woodland. This work also opens up flightpaths for dragonflies and bats.

Reeds are also removed by hand to create up to 80% open water on a pond but maintain a reed buffer up to 3m wide for wildlife.

🎃Halloween Trail- Drop in between 10am and 4pm and pick up one of our trail sheets. Explore the woods following our self-led activity trail and see what you can discover about the park. All completed trails will receive a small prize.

🕷The Wiggly Wild Halloween Show- Join us for a hands-on Wiggly Wild experience! Including Cornsnake, Bearded Dragon, Giant Millipede, Giant Stick Insects, Tailless Whip Scorpion, Fire Bellied Toad, Giant Hissing Cockroaches & a Giant African Land Snail. Guaranteed fun!

Fungi are starting to bloom in the damp, warm weather. These are two bracket fungi called dryads saddle and chicken of the woods. Shorne Woods Country Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest so please remember to take only photos and leave only footprints.

Kent Country Parks are excited to share the accredited course that we are running at Shorne Woods Country Park (Gravesend).

⛑This Forest School First Aid (2 days) is certificated and will benefit anyone looking to explore the beauty of Forest School or gain their First Aid qualification. This 2 day course is running on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th October or Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December 2024!

Randall Manor underwent its annual mowing after the wildflowers had completed their blooming cycle. The area was then raked to reduce soil nutrient levels, which is beneficial for the wildflower ecosystem.

Last winters coppice stools regrowth is already 2m tall due to the warm wet weather. The areas we coppice regrow and can be cut again in 20 years time so it's a sustainable woodland management technique. Coppicing also helps create a diverse age structure in the woods which benefits wildlife.

The seasoned firewood is now available to buy from the visitor centre. All wood we sell is ready to burn certified.
