🐾 INTERESTING CASE! Meet Winnie 🩷

This little sweetie was with us recently for quite a rare condition.
Winnie was presented with vomiting and regurgitating her food and after some diagnostic tests, including x-rays we suspected a hiatal hernia (when the stomach comes through a hole in the diaphragm). You can see in the x-ray image part of Winnie's stomach is visible in her chest!
Marta went ahead with surgery to repair the hernia and also carried out a gastropexy (tacking procedure to keep the stomach in place in the abdomen).

It is suspected to be a congenital condition that has got progressively worse over time but Winnie's new owners brought her to us to solve this chronic problem.

We are pleased to say Winnie's recovery is going well! She is no longer vomiting but needs to continue to be fed wet food in chunks and at a height, but thankfully there is nothing wrong with her appetite!

Get well soon Winnie! 🥰

❗️Beware! Grass seed season is upon us! 🌾
Just in the last few weeks we have seen multiple dogs fall victim to these pesky grass darts!
It's a good idea to check your dogs (and cats) when they have been outside, in particular their feet, ears, eyes and armpits. They can also be sniffed up into their noses!
Once these grass seeds pe*****te the skin they can also migrate around the body, potentially causing allsorts of problems.

If you see your dog suddenly head shaking, licking their foot or sneezing these could be signs there is a grass seed. Most of the time sedation or general anaesthesia is required to remove them.

☀️ Now the warm weather is upon us it's important to be mindful of our pets! Our pets are not acclimatised to heat and for something preventable, heat stroke is still too common for us to see this time of year, particularly in dogs.

Signs of heat stroke in dogs include:
☀️ Heavy panting
☀️ Drooling or foaming at the mouth
☀️ Weakness or collapse
☀️ Vomiting and diarrhoea
☀️ Confusion
☀️ Bright red or pale gums
☀️ Shaking or seizures

First aid measures you can take if you suspect heat stroke:
● Move the dog into the shade
● Poor cool water slowly over their body
● Offer them small amounts of water
● Create a breeze
● Then call the nearest Vet

The quicker your dog is cooled the better! Prevention is also key by not going for walks at the hottest time of day and NEVER leave your dog in the car. Keep them cool with water, cooling jackets or mats and fans indoors.
Extra caution should be taken if your dog is elderly, obese or a flat-faced breed.

Remember, missing a walk won't kill them!

If you're looking to bond your bunnies, here are some tips to help you out💚🐰:

1. Make sure your rabbits' living spaces are close to each other, with plenty of hiding spots for privacy.

2. Help them get used to each other's scents by swapping some hay or a towel with their scent.

3. When they're ready, let them hang out together for short periods in a neutral area.

Keep an eye on them, and don't worry if they chase or nip a little. If things get too intense, separate them and try again later.

4. Keep letting them spend time together gradually, and introduce toys as they get more comfortable. More helpful tips and information can be found over at https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/rabbit-welfare/companionship/ 💚 🐰

Feeding your bunnies some scrumptious healthy treats isn’t the only secret to winning their heart! Here’s what you can do to show your buns some love!

💗 Let them make the first move - Give your bunnies the freedom to hop over when they're ready
💗 Sharing snacks by hand - Offer a tasty treat and watch the magic happen
💗 Skip the pick ups - They prefer to be stroked at ground level
💗 Don't forget to take note of their body language and watch out for any signs that they need space!

🐰 Day 2 of is health! It's important to remember that rabbits are prey animals and often hide signs of pain or illness.

To help pick up any potential problems early you should regularly give your rabbits a nose to tail health check at home to look for any obvious signs of illness or injury.

A health examination with a vet at least once a year is advised and this annual visit is an ideal time to keep their vaccinations up to date! 💉

🐰 HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU SHOULD CHECK FOR AT HOME:

🐰 Eyes and nose: Check for discharge and discolouration
🐰 Fur & skin: Check that the fur is clean and there are no sores visible. Also check for any signs of dandruff or fleas or damp or soiled areas, look for risk / evidence of fly strike especially in the summer months!
🐰 Teeth: Check length and alignment
🐰 Weight: Check their body weight and note any changes
🐰 Ears: Check for mites, redness or any discharge

☎️ If you have any concerns regarding your rabbits health or notice a change in their behaviour, please call us on 01375 373202 to book an appointment. We also offer nurse consultations for nail clips, weight checks and general advice on nutrition.

24/06/2024

It's important to provide your rabbits with the correct nutrition for their health and well-being. 🐇
Research from the University of Edinburgh emphasised the importance of avoiding muesli-style diets for rabbits.

By switching from muesli to nuggets and plenty of feeding hay or grass, you'll help your rabbits thrive and avoid potential health issues like dental disease and obesity. 🐰

Consulting with your vet on the best way to transition your rabbit's diet is a great idea, as they can provide guidance tailored to your specific pet. Gradually shifting from muesli to a wholesome diet, which includes nuggets and feeding hay over a few weeks, will help prevent any digestive upset and ensure a smooth transition. 🌱

Remember to always provide fresh water and leafy greens for your rabbits to munch on throughout the day. 🌿 Your buns will thank you for providing them with the best possible diet to keep them happy and healthy! 🐰

❗️ATTENTION CAT OWNERS 🐱
The Government has announced that microchipping will be a legal requirement for cats in England from 10th June 2024. The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date on a pet microchipping database. Owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500.

🐱 So what is microchipping?
There is a misconception that it is a GPS but this is not the case. A small chip, the size of a grain of rice is implanted using a special needle. This has a unique number and is stored on a national database with yours and your pets details. If they go missing/escape and get handed in to a rescue or a vets, they will be scanned to find this chip number.

🐱 Why should you microchip your cat?
Unfortunately we see a lot of stray cats and unable to trace their owners. Rescues are full to the brim and this can be a life saver in some cases and of course will be peace of mind during what is a extremely stressful time. Cat theft is also on the increase.
This is why it is important to keep your contact details up to date.

🐱 Whether your cat is indoors only or an outdoor explorer do not delay.
We recommend kittens coming in for their neutering get chipped at the same time. Otherwise you can book a nurse appointment with us. Please call us on 01375 373202 to check availability.

This month is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month - 💚

It’s a month where BVNA, alongside the entire profession, champion all things veterinary nursing. Raising awareness of the skills, training and dedication that goes into being a Student or Registered Veterinary Nurse (SVN/RVN).

It can sometimes be difficult to recognise some of the different roles within the vet team – how can you spot who is an RVN? 🤔

Look out for the following:
💚 An RVN badge (shown in our picture)
💚 The RVN post-nominals

Whenever your pet encounters an RVN in your vet practice – whether alongside you as their caregiver, or as an in-patient behind the scenes – you can be assured that their needs are being met by a highly knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated professional.

Please share this post to pet caregivers everywhere to help us raise public awareness of .

❗️UPDATE ON CATS PROTECTION NEUTERING SCHEME:
Unfortunately Cats Protection have paused the discount neutering scheme and therefore we are unable to book any cat neuters needing these vouchers. You may still be able to get some help from your local cats protection branch or PDSA if you are on benefits and require help with the cost of neutering.
If you need to book in your cat for neutering with us the cost of this starts from £54.

It’s a battle between the rescues and the breeders and unfortunately the breeders are winning, and animals are suffering.

Since the pandemic when so many people acquired new pets and the pet population increased, the rescues have been increasingly unable to cope with the aftermath – high levels of abandonment of unwanted cats and dogs. A situation made many times worse by home breeding and a lack of neutering resulting in more and more litters being born.

Combined with the pressure of the cost of living crisis its a nightmare situation. Ask anyone working in rescue - it is as if we have gone back in time at least 20 years, the situation is at crisis point for our pets and continuing to deteriorate.

So who are the people not neutering their pets, deliberately breeding and adding to the problem?

Maybe they are a greedy person trying to sell kittens and puppies for profit? Or a lazy person or couldn’t be bothered to neuter? Or they might be someone who couldn’t afford to neuter ? or someone who simply did not have the skills in life to be able to seek veterinary care?

There is also another group of pet owners, those who consider themselves caring, good, responsible owners. They choose to let their pet have “just one litter”, or want their children to witness the “miracle of birth” or its okay because they have “found good homes” for their puppies or kittens.
We find this group of people particularly frustrating because the “good homes” they find could have instead given a home to cats and kittens or dogs or puppies that have already been born and are in the care of rescue centres. By adopting from rescued animals they can free up space to allow animal charities to save more cats and dogs from the streets, from neglect and from being needlessly euthanased simply because they are ‘surplus’ and unwanted.

But what you can you do? Your pets are neutered, you know the rescue centres are full and struggling, you have every sympathy for the plight of rescue animals, it makes you feel sad but how can you help? - We ask that you please speak up for the animals at every opportunity. If you hear of unneutered pets, or people planning to breed, please wherever and whenever possible speak up, be an advocate for rescued animals, let these people know the suffering that is happening, that there are too many animals and not enough homes. Some simply don’t know what is happening, a few don’t care but please try and speak to them about neutering their pet, you may just change their mind.

There is a saying “How do you save the lives of hundreds of animals? – Just neuter one!”

Thank you and sorry for the rant its been a difficult week – once again.

💚 It's so let's appreciate all those veterinary teams out there, dedicating their lives to saving animals. It's a profession that is physically and mentally draining but also the most rewarding. Veterinary medicine has come along way and the expertise can sometimes be under appreciated in comparison to human medicine 💚

🐱 Did you know cats that are stressed or anxious can become emotionally and physically unwell?

Cats can become stressed for many reasons, from changes to their environment, other cats in the house or even the neighbourhood, being bored or in pain.

Understanding your cat’s stress signals is crucial for their well-being. Signs can be subtle but can include:

🐱 Inappropriate toileting around the house - avoiding litter tray or spraying.
🐱 Increased withdrawal or hiding
🐱 Changes in appetite
🐱 Excessive scratching of furniture
🐱 Aggression/fighting or tense body language
🐱 Overgrooming

Recognizing these signals early on can make a world of difference in supporting your cat’s well-being.

🩺 It is important to rule out any underlying health problems first, so if there are any changes in your cats behaviour, please call us to book an appointment.
