Unfortunately two of my customers have recently had to have their dogs put to sleep. 😢. It’s always a privilege to be a very small part of a dogs life, and I always feel sad at the news of a dog passing. 😢

I therefore have space to take on two new customers .

I work on a 1-1 basis, I’m City & Guilds level 3 qualified and fully insured. I have been qualified and worked as a dog groomer for many years.

As well as grooming I also offer Emmi-pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning (to grooming customers).

DM me if you are interested in one of my free spaces

Please note - I’m not taking on any more larger breeds

Reggie visits me regularly every 6-7 weeks.
This keeps his coat on tip top condition, and he is brushed at home so he very rarely has any matting.

As he has been visiting me since being a puppy he is used to being groomed and is such a good boy 🐶

!!!!FLEAS!!!!

You may have noticed that fleas are rife at the moment!

I’ve had a dog in the salon today with fleas, and a customer due tomorrow has kindly let me know their dog has fleas

I would be grateful if all my customers could be extra vigilant checking their dogs before each and every grooming appointment with me.

Once a dog is in the salon with fleas, it's too late!!!!

The impact on me is enormous -

> the salon and all my equipment have to be deep cleaned
> the salon has then to be fumigated, which means that the salon cannot be entered for at least 2 hours whilst the area is treated
> further cleaning is then required
> all my appointments have to be rescheduled until the above cleaning and fumigating has been completed - which can be delayed as stocks of fumigating products are low and often out of stock due to demand

It's not only the grooming time lost but also the costs incurred to me and the inconvenience to my other customers.

PLEASE be vigilant and check your dog (and any other cats etc at home) prior to all grooming appointments.

From now on, any dog entering the salon and found to have fleas will incur an additional charge on top of their usual grooming fee.

Neutering your dog:

Spaying (female dog)
What is spaying?

Spaying (ovariohysterectomy/ovariectomy) is a surgical procedure, performed under a general anaesthetic, in which a vet removes the ovaries +/- the uterus (womb) through a midline incision in a female dog’s abdomen. This procedure can also be performed laparoscopically (keyhole) with specialist equipment. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and your dog will be able to go home the same day, if she recovers well.
What are the pros and cons of spaying my dog?
Pros
• They can’t become pregnant or develop a pseudopregnancy (phantom/false pregnancy)
• Eliminates the risk of a pyometra (a potentially life-threatening womb infection)
• They no longer have seasons
• Eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer
• Reduction in mammary tumour development (timing of spay dependant)
Cons
• Urinary incontinence risk may increase after neutering
• More prone to weight gain because of a lower metabolic rate
• Potential increased risk of developing certain types of tumours
• Osteoarthritis risk may increase
• Risk of cruciate ligament disease increases

There are lots of factors to consider when deciding whether to spay your dog. There is no ‘one size fits all’ as each individual dog, and client, situation is different. If you have any questions, please call the practice and one of our vets or nurses will be more than happy to help.
When can I spay my dog?
Again, there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer to this question. A conversation with your vet is advised so that you can make a fully informed decision. As a rule, we are aiming to spay you dog during ‘anoestrus’, a period of her cycle where there is little reproductive activity (less risk of complications). It typically starts around 3 months after her season ends. We usually advise you to wait 12 weeks after a season ends to book a spay.

Castrating (male dog)
What is castration?

Castration is the surgical removal of a dog’s testicles, under general anaesthesia, via a pre-scrotal (in front of the sc***um) incision.
Why do we castrate male dogs?
• Prevent unwanted breeding
• Prevent diseases such as testicular cancer
• Reduce unwanted behaviour, such as indoor urine marking
• Remove retained testicles (cryptorchidism)

Will castration affect my dog’s behaviour?
Testosterone can drive certain behaviours, such as urine marking and straying. However, once these become learnt behaviours, it is unlikely that the removal of testosterone, via castration, will change the frequency of these behaviours.
Additionally, whilst aggressive behaviour has previously been thought to be related to high testosterone, recent studies show this may not always be the case. A dog that barks or lunges at other dogs may be fearful, rather than aggressive. Testosterone is known to increase confidence, so called the ‘brave’ hormone. In these cases, castration, and the subsequent fall in testosterone levels, could increase the incidence of these behaviours. If you are unsure about the effect of castration on your dog’s behaviour, do not hesitate to call the practice to discuss with one of our vets or nurses.
What are the cons of castration?
• Slightly increased risk of cruciate disease and certain cancers
• More prone to obesity and by default, obesity related conditions e.g. diabetes mellitus
• Worsening of underlying nervous behaviour

Are there alternatives to surgical castration?
There is an implant, called Suprelorin, that can be implanted into dogs, subcutaneously (under the skin). Depending on the dose, the anti-testosterone effects can last for 6-12 months. This can be a good option if you are concerned about the behaviour changes that may occur with castrating your dog and want to trial the effects of lower testosterone. Please ask the vet if you have any questions about this, and if we feel your dog is suitable for this procedure.
