Last night’s three attendees! A fantastic session for all 3 dogs to work on their individual goals. We had the dogs practicing ‘settle’ (great for a dog who is easily distracted!) alongside some ‘no pulling on the lead’ practice!

If you have that ‘easily distracted’ dog then practicing training around other dogs is important ❗️however that’s tricky to do when other people’s dogs come over uninvited or members of the public undo all your hard work.

Not all dogs want or need to meet other dogs, but helping them to feel safe whilst they work around those distractions takes practice!

I don’t often post much advertisement about these indoor classes because they’re always fully booked! 🙈 New dates will soon be added for 2025! Hang on in there! 🥳

𝟐 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: 𝘚𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘎𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴!
At Repps with Bastwick Village Hall.

Photographed is little Charlie, who I first met a couple of months ago. Charlie is a rescue dog and struggles to adjust to change. When I first met him he was very, very reactive and unable to approach me.

We had a behaviour consultation and decided to find Charlie ways to help him settle into his new home, thus relaxing his need to react all the time. We’ve experimented with window film, changed equipment and training methods alongside diet discussions and body language chats - his owners are determined to support him and have such true love 🥹 It’s all about decompression over here (and sniffing is GREAT for that!)

Charlie has even been able to attend some workshops and each week he works around other dogs with less to zero reactions.

It’s been something 𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 to watch this little dog transform into who he is today!
Friday’s class will be the last chance some of you will see me before Christmas break! 🌲

I’ve had so much fun spending time introducing these dogs and handlers to the fascinating world of Scentwork. We’ve spent 6 weeks teaching the basics and they will soon now be able to move on to an ‘Improver’s Class’ to continue their progress! 🫶

“𝙈𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜𝙨” is something I hear regularly.

“𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜𝙨?” is another.

But what if I told you, it’s not always YOUR DOG that’s being a problem.

Look at dog sociability as a spectrum (a fab infographic below from everydog)

Dogs socially MATURE as they get older, just like us, meaning not all of your once-sociable pups will be the same fun loving dog they were towards others.

As people, we can be ‘expected’ to behave in a certain way around other people. However when other people act in ways we struggle to understand or like, it can change the way we behave around other people - the same can be said for your dog.

It’s not always YOUR DOG that’s the problem, sometimes it’s the OTHER DOGS they are near, perhaps it could be the environment or other combined factors (behaviour is a complex subject, pain is a common denominator when dealing with reactive dog behaviour)

So remember,

✋ NEVER punish growls.

👂 Listen to your dog’s needs when their behaviour changes.

🐕 Understand dog sociability as a SPECTRUM and don’t single them out as a BAD DOG just because they don’t like every dog they meet.

🥰 You’ll help your dog and your dog’s social skills more than you’ll ever realize just simply by being observant and listening to your dog.

When I first met Benji to the Benji I know now is an incredible transformation.

We’ve met for regular 1-2-1 sessions to introduce Benji to pattern games to help his focus on his handlers when in more difficult environments (such as passing other dogs).

I’ve watched him blossom into a wonderful character - his passion for learning new things has given him a joy 🤩

Changing walking equipment, clicker training, off lead work and choices have been some of my favourite things to assist Benji with.

I was so happy with this lovely review and am looking forward to our next session 🙏
