Very proud of Cooper who has been learning "settle".

Settling is an essential skill for Assistance Dogs to learn. It reinforces calm behavior and many Assistance Dogs will spend a good portion of their time settling quietly next to their handler, for example at work, at home, in a cafe, or in a waiting room.

Cooper and his owner have been working hard at this one, gradually building duration, distance and eventually distractions too. They're doing amazing πŸ’œ

Many owners opt for a fast-paced walk, but slower, sniffier walks can be just as - if not more - tiring.

Here are some of the reasons why it's important to let your dog sniff on walks.

Sniffing:
- provides mental stimulation
- increases dopamine (boosting mood)
- gives dogs choice and increases optimism
- lowers a dog's pulse rate and increases endorphins (encouraging calmness)
- reduces cortisol levels (relieving stress)
- increases a dog's respiration rate (making it a tiring activity)

Gorgeous Morticia (Tish) πŸ’œ is an Assistance Dog in Training. She passed her Novice Assessment last year and is currently working towards Intermediate (I really need to get better at posting dogs with their awards!!). I love journeying with teams through the ups and downs that training brings, and celebrating the wins.

When training an Assistance Dog, there will always be moments of difficulty, but it's okay to make mistakes. What's more important is how you respond - we can learn a lot as we work through challenges! Tish and her handler are a dream to work with and I'm very proud of this team 🫢🏼🐢

Assistance dogs can be trained to support people with a wide variety of disabilities. Some disabilities are not immediately obvious to others, and are often referred to as 'hidden disabilities'. Hidden disabilities can include mental health conditions, chronic conditions, neurological conditions, learning differences and sensory impairments.

Please respect people's privacy by refraining from asking personal questions about their disability πŸ’œ

My dog is *stubborn*, sound familiar? 🐾

When it seems as though your dog is being stubborn, this can feel incredibly frustrating. You ask your dog to do something, and they seemingly refuse to co-operate.

But what if they are not stubborn at all, but just simply misunderstood?

Instead, they might be:

1) Unmotivated.
We can do something about this! Food is the most obvious reinforcer, but depending on what motivates your dog, sniffing/exploration, praise and/or toys can also be used as a primary reinforcer.

2) In pain.
Pain is often overlooked as it is not always obvious. If your dog's behaviour has suddenly changed, it is good to rull out pain before beginning training with a check-over from a vet.

3) Fearful/anxious.
Previous learning history can be impactful. A dog who has had a bad experience slipping on a pavement, for example, may refuse to walk on one. A dog who is nervous around other dogs, may refuse to move but instead stop and fixate on the trigger.

4) Overwhelmed by the environment.
Dogs do not have the capacity to generalise behavior in the same way we do. If your dog responds to a sit cue in the house, but seems to ignore you outside, it could be that you have not proofed this behavior (perfecting it in both familiar and distracting environments).

5) Not understanding what you have asked.
Consider if you have been asking too much too soon. Often we teach a dog a new behavior and stop training way before they have had a chance to process and refine their new skill. It is good to stand back and recognise how we can communicate better: maybe we've repeated the cue too many times without a clear reward; or we haven't broken this behavior down into simple steps that our dogs can understand.

There are many more reasons why dogs are not 'stubborn'. But this is a good starting place. I encourage you to always take a moment to reflect on what might be causing your dog to behave in a 'stubborn' manner.

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year 🎊

Thank you for your support in 2024. As a small business owner, moving and starting afresh in a new town has been difficult. But I am grateful to everyone who has stuck with me as I made this change to get married and move to Knutsford. Hope to see many of you again in the new year and hopefully some new faces too! 🐢

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas. I am off work now for the holidays and will be back in January πŸŽ„πŸŽ

5 reasons to play tug with your dog πŸ•

1. It provides your dog with mental and physical stimulation. Meeting your dog's needs is essential to maintaining their overall wellbeing.

2. Setting time aside to play with your dog helps build relationship and strengthens your bond!

3. It gives your dog an appropriate outlet to rehearse their innate predatory motor pattern. This can release endorphins in their brain, helping boost mood.

4. It's a great alternative to using food as a reward. Some dogs might even find it higher value!

5. Touchangok9 have a variety of tug toys to keep things exciting, all of which are non-toxic and free of any nasty chemicals.

I love my job πŸ’œ

Dog training is a series of highs and lows and I often feel saddened when teams are struggling. But I get to rejoice when they're succeeding. This week it's been lovely to see the amazing progress some teams have made in overcoming training challenges. One Assistance Dog team has been learning to pick up a lead and bring it to their owner, another learnt to open and close doors! I love that I get to be a part of it.

It is important to not distract Assistance Dogs while they are working. This includes not petting, offering food, talking to them, nor taking pictures without the handlers permission. Distracting an Assistance Dog could, for example, cause the dog to miss an important medical alert.
