The increase in rain during autumn can cause an influx of wild mushrooms, as they thrive in damp climates.

You may come across them on walks, or they may appear in your garden. It can be very difficult to determine whether a particular mushroom is safe to eat, as many can look very similar but have very different toxicity levels.

If you suspect your pet has ingested wild mushrooms, speak to a vet as soon as possible. Also, try and either take a sample or get a photo of the type of mushroom you think your pet may have ingested, as it may help the vet to identify the type of toxin and effectively treat it.

Meet Nugget! This lovely little boy came to the practice to have a check-up on his weight and receive flea and worming. This is common in young animals like Nugget because they continue to gain weight until they are 9-12 months old.

Worming, especially in young puppies and kittens, is very important as a high worm burden leads to:
🐛Poor growth and weight loss
🐜Diarrhea or vomiting
🐛A bloated or “pot-bellied” belly
🐜Dull coat and low energy
🐛In severe cases, worms can even be fatal in very young animals.

To look into receiving flea and worm treatment for your animal, contact one of our practices or take a look at The Healthy Pet Club!

Hey hoomans! 👋 It’s me, Finley — your friendly neighborhood tail-wagger!
Today I went with mum to work at the vets for something called chemical castration (fancy words, right?)

✨ Here’s how my day went:

🕗 Morning: I had to skip my breakfast just in case I needed sedating for my injection. Then off we went to work— I was a little nervous, but the nurses were super nice and gave me cuddles.

💉 At the clinic: The vet gave me a quick check-up to make sure I’m healthy, including the dreaded scales! Then I got an implant injected under my skin. That’s it! No surgery, no stitches, and I got extra treats for being super brave.

😴 Afterwards: I went home feeling totally fine. I can play, walk, and nap just like normal. Over the next few weeks, that clever little implant will lower my testosterone and help with things like roaming, marking, or over-excited behavior.

🐕‍🦺 The best part? It wears off on its own in 6 months! My humans and vet can decide later if we want to make it permanent or not with surgery.

If you’ve ever wondered about chemical castration, talk to your vet
Love,
Finley 🐾

🕷TRICK OR TREAT 🍭

People dressed in costumes and unexpected knocks at the door can be confusing and scary for many dogs.
Here are our Halloween top tips:
🎃 Be careful when opening the door so your dog doesn’t accidentally escape
👻 If your dog is really worried, consider a sign saying ‘nervous dog,
please do not knock’. You could still leave treats out for children to help themselves
🍬 Keep human sweets and chocolate safely out of your dog’s reach
🧛 Keep dressing up for humans only. Costumes can feel restrictive and prevent your pet from communicating their discomfort

On Sunday 26th October, the clocks go back one hour as British Summer Time ends.
While this gives us an extra hour in bed, it can disrupt our pets’ routines, especially feeding and walking schedules.

Animals thrive on consistency, so sudden changes can cause confusion or anxiety. To help ease the transition, consider gradually adjusting your pet’s routine over a few days leading up to the change.

A little preparation can make a big difference in keeping your furry friends happy and settled.

Have you noticed your pet reacting to the time change before? Share your stories or tips below - we’d love to hear them! 🐶🐱🕒

Recently our Huddersfield Branch met the lovely Norman who came in with a special dental concern.

His deciduous (baby) canine teeth were lingually displaced, meaning they were growing too close to the tongue and causing discomfort.

Norman had x-rays to predict eruption pathways of his adult teeth - Look at all those teeth!

To help Norman feel better and make sure his adult teeth come in properly, our veterinary team performed a gingivectomy — a minor surgical procedure to remove a small amount of gum tissue and create space for those displaced teeth.

Norman was a superstar throughout his visit and is now healing beautifully under a watchful eye at home!
