🍁The weather is changing, and with it comes different challenges for your horses and ponies.

❄️More time spent in their stables --> Filled legs, Colic
🌧Wet, muddy fields --> Mud rash, Injuries from slips in the field
🌱Last flush of grass growth --> Laminitis, Colic

To prevent some of these conditions, consider making any changes to your horses routine gradually.

Why not consider using our ECB spa to help tackle filled legs and mud rash this Autumn & Winter? By keeping on top of these conditions you can prevent them becoming a bigger problem later on!

🍁 With the arrival of September we move into our Autumn season, which is traditionally known as ‘tapeworm time’ as this was a good point in the year to worm hunting horses coming in from a summer at grass.

While It can be a useful way to remember to target tapeworm there is certainly no place for blanket worming anymore without knowing if there are parasites present to treat and if so, which ones?

🍂 Autumn worm control means:
✅ Worm egg counts for redworm and ascarids
✅ EquiSal test for tapeworm if you haven't in the last six months
✅ Check for resistance to any wormer used
✅ Look out for signs of pinworm and bots

"The ECB equine spa uses cold salt hydrotherapy to treat and prevent a multitude of injuries in 2°C /35°F saltwater.

This equine spa successfully addresses virtually all lower leg injuries including tendon and ligament injuries, laminitis, splints, sore shins, open wounds, and hoof conditions.

Cold Salt hydrotherapy for horses is an effective and drug-free therapy that can be used for rehabilitation and performance as well as injury prevention. It increases mobility and reduces swelling in the limbs before and after competitive events and training.
The cold temperature of the water in the equine spa rapidly increases blood circulation across the body. This allows for pain relief and reduces any bruising, swelling, and inflammation. Tissue damage is repaired and recovery time is reduced. The addition of salt allows for the benefits of salt water therapy where inflammation is further reduced and the natural healing process of an injury is enhanced" - ECB Equine Spa.

❗️Hard Ground - PLEASE READ❗️

Just a little heads up to everyone, I am seeing alot of horses with concussion injuries due to the very hard ground. Please please be aware especially if your horse likes a good stomp around his field that it may be beneficial to bring them in a little earlier than usual or if their living out to let them spend a few hours in on some nice soft surfaces.

At the moment I am seeing a lot of distal limb inflammation and heat, I do not think its a coincidence. Particularly around the fetlock area such as the collateral ligaments and annular ligaments. If you suspect your horse is a little off or a little lame after coming in from the field it could potentially be from the hard ground, so have a feel around that area for any symptoms and of course the hoof for any laminitis. As the horses limb becomes compromised from the concussion
it becomes swollen and sore and it can cause the horse to misplace their feet and result in essence a sprained fetlock.

The hard ground can cause plenty of other issues due to the concussion up the limb. This can include bruised feet, tendon and other soft tissue injuries, splints, tender cannon bones (shin splints) and the obvious laminitis. All of this eventually can lead to tension in the muscles due to compensation.

So please monitor your horse and manage it properly, always check the ground your riding on. If anyone suspects there horse may be struggling then please get in touch 💙

🐎Horses: The Truth Behind the Labels - Lazy, stubborn, grumpy....

Labels are always handy ways of explaining things away, especially when it comes to horses.

🫢We are continually amazed at how culturally ingrained this dismissing of horse behavior is, despite the volumes of evidence and research to support that it is how they communicate.

🤔It also, surely, makes some level of logical sense when you think about it!

❓Instead of saying "my horse always pins his ears when he sees the saddle", how about WHY is my horse pinning his ears when he sees the saddle?

❓Instead of saying "my horse always moves away from the mounting block when I try to get on", how about WHY does my horse move away from the mounting block when I try to get on!

You get the gist - be curious about equine behavior - it is their language!

🌠🌠If you want to help yourself to help your horse to stay sound and happy, then we HIGHLY recommend Dr. Sue Dyson's course - 24 Behaviors Indicating Pain in the Ridden Horse.

🚀🚀This groundbreaking research is proving to be an invaluable tool for owners, vets and other equine professionals in better recognizing the early signs of a problem brewing.

🗝️🔑Early detection is the key to avoiding chronic lameness, pain and dangerous behaviors from horses that are trying to communicate their discomfort when not being heard with subtle signs - escalation to bucking, biting, rearing, spooking can mean it is late in the game for resolution!

⭐️ LAMINITIS WARNING ⭐️

We are currently seeing high numbers of laminitis cases - it’s all this sun and rain!

A few obvious and not so obvious signs to look out for:
- reluctance to walk
- leaning back
- walking with a heel to toe action rather than a flat footfall x
- intermittently shifting weight between forelimbs when standing
- increased heat and digital pulses in feet
- ‘pottery’ when walking on hard or stony ground.

What to do? CALL THE VET
- laminitis is a medical emergency
- strict box rest on a deep shavings bed
- anti inflammatories
- may require blood tests and / or X-rays

How to prevent?
- carefully monitor your horses weight and Body Condition Score
If overweight try to put your horse on a diet and restrict time out at grass
- feed soaked hay
- plenty of exercise - even 10 mins of lunging each day is useful in burning calories. Swimming is also a great form of exercise.
- regular farriery
- chat to us about running some routine blood tests on your horse or pony to look for cushings disease or Equine Metabolic Syndrome.

Spring is here and with it can come laminitis! 🌱

The best way to deal with laminitis is preventing the causes under your control, but if you do find yourself with a horse or pony with laminitis we are able to help alongside your veterinary treatment. Our spa provides cryotherapy which is used to help improve outcomes in horses suffering with laminitis.

Keep an eye out for early signs of laminitis. Please contact your vet if you notice any of the following signs or you suspect laminitis -

🌱lameness, especially when turning in circles
🌱shifting their weight between their legs
🌱increased digital pulses
🌱pain in the toe region when hoof testers are applied
🌱reluctance or a hesitant gait
