There are many things we can do to help our feathery friends over the winter. A regular source of high-energy foods at a garden feeding station is like a proverbial lottery win for wild birds and can be a lifesaver.

Once they know it’s there many birds will depend on the food you supply, so it’s helpful to top up your feeders to prevent them from having a wasted visit and using up vital energy. Fresh, clean, ice free water is another winter essential for drinking and bathing as it’s a vital part of the daily routine of birds.

To do the utmost put out food and water on a regular basis and if you want to do extra in severe weather feed twice daily if you can (or if you notice stocks have run low), feeding in the morning and in the early afternoon. Once you establish a feeding routine, try not to change it as the birds will become used to it and time their visits to your garden accordingly. Birds need high-energy (high-fat) foods during the cold weather to help maintain their body fat reserves which help them in turn to survive the frosty nights so try to use only good-quality food and scraps though anything will help. Keeping the feeding area clean (be sure to use an animal friendly disinfectant) and tidy will help prevent spread of any diseases and luring in rodents.

To give a summary of foody options,
* Seed mixtures and nuts are good for starlings.
* Fat balls, preferably in wire cages as opposed to netting as birds such as woodpeckers can get their tongues caught.
* Insect food mixtures are good for Bluetits.
* Thrushes and Blackbirds like fruit such as over ripe apples or raisins.
* Berry mixes are good for Finches too.
* As is Niger seed which is especially loved by goldfinches but does require specially designed feeders as the seed is so small.
* Wet dog or cat food (of the Chicken with jelly variety) is good for insectivores but not much good if it freezes.
* Rice and other cereals and grains are good for helping with a balanced diet.
* Chopped up bacon rind, suet or fat from meats (all unsalted) are beneficial for small birds like wrens.

If you want to go all out in your garden and you have the space planting berry and/or fruiting trees and shrubs such as Malus (crab apple), Rosa rugosa (rosehip) and Pyracantha (firethorne) is very helpful.

* Watch out for inferior seed mixes which are often padded out with lentils.

* Bread can be given but only as part of a balanced diet alongside other feeds.

* Please bear in mind birds are lactose intolerant so avoid any milk-based scraps or anything salted.

* Lastly, start early before the weather is too bad as the better condition they start out in, the easier they will cope later.

Please avoid fireworks this year ❤️

If you’re having a bonfire be sure to check for wildlife, especially if you’ve had it standing. A pile of sticks looks like a great home for a hedgehog so be aware.

Just a little info if your visiting the beach anytime soon

We’ve had the first report of a seal on Cleethorpes Beach.

Unfortunately, rather than being left to rest, it was ushered back into the tide by a well intentioned member of the public. In weaker seals, this can be a fatal mistake.

On our beach you’re likely to see either Grey or Common Seals.

With our proximity to Donna Nook, where a staggering 2,207 grey seal pups were born last year, it needs no explanation why you may see some resting on Cleethorpes Beach over the next few months.

If you are planning a visit to Donna Nook, please take great care to not disturb the seals and strictly follow the instructions provided by Donna Nook Wardens (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust). If you have any concerns about the seals, you can let one of their volunteers know and stay behind the barriers. Litter can put seals at great risk, so please place rubbish in the bins provided or take it home with you.

Last year the first pup was born on the 30th October 2023, It was just visible from the viewing area, but it was distant and best viewed through binoculars. - Sourced from www.lincstrust.org.uk

If you spot a seal on an unmonitored beach, please follow these steps:

Stop: Do not approach the seal and immediately place dogs on leads. Seals have a nasty bite if threatened.

Space: Remain a minimum of 100 meters away, and preferably more if you can!

Silence: Keep quiet, seals are easily disturbed, if the seal has noticed you, you’re likely too close or too loud.

Sleep: Seals will use the beach to rest, this is their home, we are just visitors. Do not attempt to push the seal into the water; it’s vital that they’re left to rest. In pups, you can also cause young to be separated from their parent.

Support: If you do have concerns, you can contact our team, Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary, BDMLR or the RSPCA.

It’s also good to report any seals on Cleethorpes Beach to Cleethorpes Beach Safety.

Do not disclose the location of the seal on social media; this may cause an influx of people to attend the area.
