βοΈ how to focus on their handler,
βοΈ what a release cue is,
βοΈ how to sit with duration as the foundation for stay and wait.
And all with the distractions of the class environment!
Well done puppies π€©

Great muzzle advice β¬οΈ

Those of you that find yourself needing to muzzle your dog, here are a few tips:
-Dogs need pant room and ideally yawning space when theyβre muzzled. Often, if the muzzle looks big, itβs actually a good fit. They shouldnβt have their mouths clamped shut at all, it should be comfortable and allow for natural behaviours.
-Squeezy cheese, wet food sachets and raw food stuffed in a squeezy tube (you can buy these on Amazon) are great ways of feeding your dog through the muzzle. Practise giving them treats through it at home, too, as thereβs a knack to it that can take some time to figure out.
-Buy at least two muzzles of different makes. Primrose has her βgoodβ muzzles, which are the same style and she wears them 90% of the time. Then she has her other ones, which arenβt perfect but still comfortable and well-fitted. If theyβre in the exact same muzzle all the time, itβs like wearing the same pair of shoes day in day out- the same points of your foot have contact with the shoe, which is fine until your sock wrinkles or a tiny amount of sand causes friction and you develop blisters. Itβs the same with muzzles, even the best ones can cause friction if the dogβs snout gets wet or sandy. Mixing it up means any friction areas will have time to properly heal.
-Look for padded points of contact. Primroseβs first muzzle rested on the soft part of her nose, and the plastic left scars. If you see plastic or metal against the skin, using foam and duct tape or bandages, you can pad those areas to avoid discomfort.
-Donβt just muzzle your dog when you are going out for walks or somewhere scary like the vets- rehearse your dog wearing it inside, too, so they get used to the feel of it and donβt just associate it with high energy activities or scary places.
-Remember that muzzle training is an important skill for ALL dogs, and wearing a muzzle shouldnβt feel like a punishment. Muzzles save lives, and if conditioned properly should be no different to wearing a collar or harness.
These are the faces of some very proud puppy class graduates π₯Ή. Don't they look cute!
It was a brilliant 6 weeks. During the course the puppies learned a variety of behaviours including focus, sit, recall, walking on a lead and how to settle. They also learned how to interact with other dogs and people in a friendly and respectful manner whilst observing body language.
I am thrilled with their progress and look forward to continuing their journey during the advanced course in the New Year π
Let's make it the best story ever written π

One of the perks of working in a vets! This adorable, tiny Maltipoo baby came in for his first vaccination tonight and I got to have cuddles π₯°. All so he had a good vet experience of course...so selfless of me π π . Your practice should always strive to make vet visits as positive as possible, especially with impressionable puppies. Their young brains are basically a big sponge that is constantly absorbing information from their environment, it is our duty to trickle feed that sponge with wonderful things β€. . #guildforddogschool #dogschool #puppyschool #trainingwithlove #rewardbasedtraining #theinstituteofmoderndogtrainers #imdt #imdtdogtrainer #positivereinforcement #dogtrainer #forcefreetraining #petprofessionalnetwork #ethicaldogtraining #puppytraining #guildford #bethechange #positiverewardtraining #petprofessionalguild
