🌰 Conker season is here...

As autumn arrives, conkers (horse chestnuts) start falling, and while they might seem like fun toys for your pets, they can be dangerous! ⚠️

👉 Toxicity: Conkers contain a chemical called aesculin, which is toxic to dogs and other pets if ingested. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.

👉 Choking hazard: Their size and shape make them a choking risk or cause intestinal blockages.

🚫 Prevent accidents: Keep an eye on your pets during walks and in the garden, and make sure to remove any conkers they might find.

🐾 If your pet ingests a conker, contact us, your vet, or the nearest vet immediately!

Creating a safe space for your pet during stressful events like fireworks can help them feel secure and reduce anxiety.

Here's how you can set up a cosy, calming environment for your pet:

✔️Select a room in your home that is farthest from the noise or an interior room
✔️Ensure the area is away from heavy foot traffic and other pets that might disturb your pet.
✔️ Place your pet's favourite bed or blanket in the space to provide comfort and familiarity.
✔️ Include a few of your pet's favourite toys to help them feel more at ease.
✔️Close all curtains or blinds to block out flashing lights from fireworks.
✔️Use treat-dispensing or puzzle toys to keep your pet occupied and distracted from the noise.
✔️Consider offering long-lasting chews or their favourite treats to create positive associations with the space.
✔️Plug in a pheromone diffuser in a safe space to release calming scents that can reduce anxiety.
✔️Anxiety coats or calming vests can help your pet feel more secure.
✔️Keep the door to the safe space open so your pet can enter and leave as they wish.
✔️Make sure they have easy access to water.
✔️Let your pet get used to this space before fireworks or an upcoming event.
✔️Spend time with them there, offering treats and playtime so they associate it with positive experiences.
✔️ If possible, stay with your pet during the fireworks to provide additional comfort. Being with you can help them feel more secure.

By creating a safe, comfortable space for your pet, you can help them manage their anxiety during loud and stressful events.

🎇🎆 Fireworks can be very stressful for pets, and with events like Halloween, Bonfire Night, Diwali, and New Year's Eve coming up, it's important to prepare early to keep your pet calm and safe.

🎪 Create a safe space:
Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat during fireworks. Make it cosy with their favourite bedding, toys, and even a piece of clothing that smells like you.

🔊 Get them used to noise and loud bangs:
Start playing fireworks sounds at a low volume weeks before the events. Gradually increase the volume over time, and reward your pet with treats or playtime to help them associate the sounds with something positive.

🥰 Keep things calm:
On the night of the fireworks, close curtains to block out flashes and play calming music or turn on the TV to help drown out the noise. Your calm presence will also help soothe your pet.

🔌 Use calming products:
Consider using calming aids like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps. Speak with your vet to find the best option for your pet.

🏡 Keep them indoors:
To keep your pet safe, keep them indoors during fireworks. Close all doors, windows, and pet flaps securely. If your dog needs to go out, do it before the fireworks start.

🔒 Update ID and microchip info:
Ensure your pet's ID tags and microchip information are up-to-date, just in case they manage to escape.

By preparing ahead of time, you can help your pet feel more comfortable and safe during the fireworks season.

🦮 How much exercise does your dog need?

The amount of exercise required for dogs varies based on factors such as breed, age, and overall health.

Regular physical activity is a key factor in maintaining your dog's physical and mental well-being. Smaller breeds may need around 30 minutes to 1 hour of exercise per day, while larger and more active breeds may require 1 to 2 hours or more.

Puppies, with their high energy levels, may need multiple short bursts of play and exercise throughout the day. 🐶

Regular walks, playtime, and interactive activities like fetch or agility training can help meet your dog's exercise needs. It's important to observe your dog's behaviour to determine if they require more or less activity to stay happy and healthy.

Consulting with a member of our team can provide personalised recommendations based on your dog's specific needs, ensuring they receive appropriate exercise tailored to their requirements.

How much stimulation does your cat need? 🐱

Cats may seem independent, but they need plenty of stimulation to stay happy and healthy!

Here are some tips to ensure your feline friend gets the mental and physical exercise they need:

✔️ Interactive play: Spend at least 15-20 minutes a day playing with toys like feather wands, laser pointers, or interactive puzzles.

✔️ Environmental enrichment: Provide scratching posts, climbing trees, and cosy hiding spots to keep your cat entertained.

✔️ Toys: Provide your cat with a variety of toys that they can play with alone, such as balls, toy mice, and puzzle feeders.

✔️ Window views: Set up a perch near a window so your cat can watch birds and squirrels outside.

✔️ Social interaction: If your cat enjoys company, consider rescuing or adopting another cat for companionship.

Remember, every cat is unique, so observe your cat to understand their preferences and needs! 🐾

🚨🌊 Beware of saltwater poisoning!

As summer heats up, it's important to keep our pets safe at the beach and around salt water.

Saltwater poisoning can occur when pets ingest large amounts of saltwater, leading to dehydration, vomiting, diarrhoea, and, in severe cases, seizures or even death.

Here's how to protect your pet:

✔️ Hydration: Provide fresh water to prevent them from drinking saltwater.

✔️Monitor Play: Limit intense play in the sea and watch for excessive swallowing of seawater.

✔️Signs of Trouble: Watch for symptoms like lethargy, confusion, or vomiting after beach outings.

If you suspect saltwater poisoning, contact your vet immediately. Prevention and quick action are key to keeping your pets safe this summer! 🌞🐶🐱

Regularly checking your pet for lumps and bumps is crucial for their health and well-being.

Here's a quick guide for your cats, dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs:

Why it's important:
✔️Early detection can lead to early treatment.
✔️ Lumps can be benign or a sign of something more serious.

How to check:
✋ Pet comfortably: Ensure your pet is relaxed and comfortable.
✋ Use gentle hands: Run your hands over their body, feeling for any unusual lumps or bumps.
✋ Check common areas: Pay attention to the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and limbs.
✋ Observe changes: Note any changes in size, shape, or texture over time.

When to see a vet:
✔️If you find a new lump or bump.
✔️If an existing lump changes size, shape, or colour.
✔️If the lump is painful to touch or causes your pet discomfort.

Regular checks can help catch potential health issues early and we advise making it a part of your grooming routine.

Stay vigilant, and keep your pets happy and healthy! 🐶🐱🐰🐹

Have you ever found a stray pet but felt unsure of what to do? Your actions can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of a stray cat or dog. Here are several steps you can take:

🥰Approach with care: Stray animals, often frightened and injured, may react unpredictably. Approach slowly and speak gently to avoid adding their fear.

🔒 Check for identification: Look for a collar with tags that might have the owner's contact information. Some pets also have microchips, so a visit to a local vet or animal shelter for a scan is a good idea.

💧 Provide food and water: Offering the animal some food and water not only helps gain its trust but also ensures it's not hungry or dehydrated, showing your compassion for its well-being.

🏡 Keep them safe: If possible, bring the Animal into a safe and secure area, such as your home or back garden, away from traffic and other dangers.

📲📸 Social media: Posting a photo and description of the pet on local community boards, social media platforms, and lost-and-found pet websites can help. This simple act can help spread the word quickly and increase the chances of reuniting the pet with its owner.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure that the stray cat or dog receives the care it needs and has the best chance of being reunited with its owner.

🏖️Heading to the beach this summer?

Dog-friendly beaches are great places for dogs to exercise and have fun, but it is important to be aware of hidden hazards and possible dangers when planning a trip. 🐶

Here are a few things to watch out for on your next trip to the coast…

🌊 Be mindful of strong currents and tides. These can be particularly dangerous for both humans and dogs, especially if they are not familiar with the sea. Always check tide times and keep an eye on the water while you and your pet are playing near the shore.

🎣🍾🐚Secondly, be cautious of sharp objects like broken shells, glass, or discarded fishing gear. These can cause injuries to your pet's paws or if they are swallowed It's a good idea to carry a basic first-aid kit with you, just in case.

🐙 Look out for jellyfish and other marine creatures that might have washed ashore. Some can sting or bite, leading to painful reactions. Keep your dog on a lead if you suspect such hazards might be around.

🌞Another important consideration is the heat. Sand can become extremely hot under the sun, burning your dog's paws. To avoid heatstroke, ensure that both you and your dog stay well-hydrated and find shade out of the sun.

💩Lastly, always be respectful of local wildlife and other beachgoers. Keep your dog under control, pick up after them, and dispose of any waste properly. This helps keep beaches clean and enjoyable for everyone.

With these precautions in mind, you and your canine companion can safely enjoy the many wonderful beaches the UK has to offer.

Happy exploring! 🐕🚶

🚶🦮🌞 Walking your dog in the summer can be a delightful experience for both you and your canine companion.

The warm sunshine and longer days provide the perfect opportunity to explore new walks, visit dog parks, or enjoy a stroll around your local area. 🌳❄️☀️

It's important to keep in mind a few tips to ensure your dog's safety and comfort during these outings.

🤚 First, always check the pavement temperature with the back of your hand before heading out. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Opt for grassy areas or shaded paths to prevent burns.

💧 Secondly, bring plenty of water for both you and your dog to stay hydrated, and take breaks in the shade to cool down.

🌄Consider walking early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

Additionally, be mindful of signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and seek immediate shade and water if these occur.

With these precautions, you can enjoy the simple pleasures of a wagging tail and the happy companionship of your loyal friend.

Are you travelling with your dog this summer? 🐶🗺️

🚗⛴️ If you're venturing to a new place this summer, a place your pet may not know (or even if it's a place they do know), remember, they cannot communicate when they're lost. By taking the responsible step of microchipping them and ensuring their details are always up to date, we can rest assured that we're doing our part to keep them safe and secure.

Today, take just five minutes ⏰ to ensure your contact details are always up-to-date on the database. This simple, quick action can make a significant difference, ensuring that if your pet ever goes missing, it can be reunited with you as swiftly as possible, giving you the control and peace of mind you deserve.

If your pet isn't microchipped, our Registered Veterinary Nurses provide consultations to implant a microchip.
