Save the Elephant Day ๐
Elephants are known for being the largest land animals and notoriously referred to as โgentle giantsโ.
They are emotional, intelligent and beautiful in the wild, but sadly their population is rapidly decreasing, predominantly due to poaching for their Ivory tusks.
A day to draw attention to them aims to educate, create awareness and in turn promote action. We can all do our bit, no matter how far away from them we may be.
Elephants are a cornerstone to the environments in which they live, their size and strength allow them to adapt their surroundings, for example by digging a new watering hole. They are also vital for spreading seeds, which in turn facilitates the reproduction of various plant and tree species.
They have also been admired for as far back as one can remember, for their strength, wisdom, and sociable natures. They are commonly featured in architecture, some religions believe them to house the souls of ancestors. They are frequently used as working animal in Asia, due to their strength.
Despite our affinity with this beautiful species, they are still subjected to abuse and exploitation. Not just directly but also through deforestation.
There are lots of ways you can help, the easiest thing you can do, with minimal effort is to spread the word. Promote the cause, talk about it. If you could offer some free time, you could volunteer for organisations that focus its efforts on conservations of these creatures.
For example the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Fauna and Flora International (FFI) or Elephant Crisis Fund (ECF). You could also make a donation to these, or other charities.
Or adopting an elephant for yourself or a loved one is also a brilliant way to contribute if you are able to.
Please, if you have a moment, share this post, and help to spread the word.
