Recently, we had this little one come in for his first vaccinations. Although it can be a stressful visit, there are ways you can make it a smoother and fearless experience for both you and your puppy:

1. Bring Comfort Items

Your puppy might feel more at ease with a favourite toy or blanket from home.

2. Treats and Rewards

Offer small, tasty treats before and after the visit to create positive associations with the vet.

3. Stay Calm

Puppies pick up on their owner’s emotions. Stay upbeat and relaxed to reassure your puppy.

4. Practice Handling

Before the visit, gently handle your puppy's paws, ears, and body to get them accustomed to being touched in a similar way to how the vet will examine them.

Rafiki isn’t the greatest fan of fireworks…

But we’ve got some ways to help keep your pets, like Rafiki, as comfortable as possible:

- Keep your pets inside and in a room where they can cuddle up and be comfortable. Close the cat flap, get some cosy blankets and shut the blinds to minimise the lights disturbing your pet.
- Carry on as normal: Seeing your beloved pet feel so panicked by something out of your control is horrible. Keeping your routine in the evening as normal can help them realise it’s safe.
- Create safe hiding spots: cats might like to hide under a bed, or if you have cardboard boxes, use them to offer another space to shelter. Use blankets to cover your dogs crate. Adding some familiar-smelling blankets or toys can help them too. More novel food items or toys such as Kongs can also be a great distraction.
- Have enough water and food nearby: If your pet is hiding, move food and water close by so that they don’t feel they have to leave their hiding space before they’re ready to.
- Background music to calm nerves: Classic FM has a great programme specifically for pets on fireworks night. Any calming, instrumental music is good but if you would like the link for this special programme, visit their radio channel.
- Update your pets microchip details: There is a small chance that your pet may get lost. We highly recommend that you update any microchip details so that if they do run off, there is a much better chance of you being reunited.
- Contact us: Some herbal and prescription medications can help your pet if the fireworks get too much. Medications need to be prescribed by our registered vets but some herbal tablets and plug-ins, such as Feliway, can be bought from your local pet store.

If you are concerned or would like some advice, please contact the practice. We are offering our emergency services as normal to our clients. Just contact us on 01483 610 292.

Rob and Amber have made the decision to move back to where Rob was born and brought up in Northumberland, so they can raise Ophelia and Isabelle nearer to their extended family and support network.

Rob was the original "Guildford Vet", and we are all very grateful for his hard work and dedication, helping to form the thriving practice we are today. Rob’s last day at The Guildford Vet will be Friday the 29th of November. Trystan, who has worked with us since December 2023, is stepping into Rob’s shoes as Senior Veterinary Surgeon alongside our vets Peter, David, Chris, and Emma. If you have a pet that sees Rob regularly, we are offering free-of-charge “handover appointments” where Rob will discuss treatment and formally handover to another one of our experienced team. Please call, email, or PetsApp us to make a time that is convenient for you if you would like one of these handover appointments.

Rob will be missed by all of us here at The Guildford Vet, and we wish him and his family all the very best with their new adventure in Northumberland.

Look who’s back…

You might recognise Mr. Yogi from a previous post (swipe to see a less-than-impressed Yogi) when he needed surgery to remove something he should not have eaten….

This Friday, Yogi and his pal, Purdy, were in for a visit. We can report back that Yogi is a-ok with a clean bill of health from our wonderful vets. Hopefully, he has learnt his lesson to not eat things he shouldn’t….
