🍂 🐱 As autumn sets in and the nights grow longer, it's time to prepare for Bonfire Night. However, while fireworks bring us joy, they can be distressing for our feline friends.

As clever creatures, cats require extra care during this time. Here are some tips to help keep your cat safe and comfortable:

🏠 Keep your cat indoors where possible and make sure they are microchipped
🤫Create a cosy and quiet space inside where they can relax and avoid the noise.
🐱Consider giving them calming treats or supplements to help them stay calm. A pheromone diffuser may also be beneficial, particularly to start using ahead of the celebration season.

The fireworks season is just around the corner, but for many dogs, this time of year can be quite distressing. To ensure that your canine companion feels safe and secure during this period, it's essential to prepare them ahead of time.

Here are our top three tips for keeping your pet as comfortable as possible:

🚪Keep your dog from escaping the house by securely closing all doors and windows.

🎆Close curtains and blinds to help muffle the sounds and flashing lights of fireworks.

🦮Walk your dog before it gets dark.

🔒 In case of an unexpected event, ensure your pet has an up-to-date microchip with current information.

❤️Give your dog plenty of love, attention, and fun activities to distract them.

🐶 Avoid leaving your dog alone during this time.

🎶 Have some calming music playing in the background to mask out the loud bangs of fireworks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.

It may be a beautiful sunny day, but don’t forget to keep an eye on the temperature before you and your dog head outside this summer.

Do you know how hot is too hot for your dog? See our chart below before you plan your day. 🌡️ 🕐☀️

If the temperatures rise to Celsius, classified as high risk, we advise that you walk your dog at the cooler times of the day, either first thing in the morning or early evening.

🌱🌾🌿 As we enter the season of frequent lawn mowing, it's important to remember to keep your pets safe.

Injuries caused by incidents with lawnmowers can be severe. Sometimes pets react to the noise and movement as they do with vacuum cleaners, but the consequences are much worse. When possible, it's best to keep your pets indoors until the job is complete and the lawnmower is safely stored away.

Here are some additional tips to help keep your pets safe during lawn mowing season:

⚠️ If you have an outdoor cat, consider keeping them indoors during lawn mowing with doors and windows closed to prevent them from escaping.

⚠️ Check areas of long grass for wildlife and any pets resting.

⚠️ Teach your pet to associate the sound of the lawnmower with positive things like treats or playtime. This will help them feel less anxious when the lawnmower is near them.

⚠️ Always check the area for any hidden objects or debris before mowing. This will prevent objects from being thrown out and potentially injuring your pet.

⚠️ Lastly, always supervise your pet if they are outside during lawn mowing. This will allow you to react quickly if they show any signs of distress or attempt to approach the lawnmower.

Here are some tips on what to do with your pet on a hot day as the temperatures begin to rise… ☀️ 🐶 🐱 🐰

Understanding the science behind why our pets get poorly is vital to promoting well-being and recovery. 🧪🧬

Our veterinary nurses 👩‍🔬 can be responsible for in-house processing of samples, whether that is running a blood test or analysing a sample under the microscope. Some samples may be sent to an external laboratory, and the Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) may be responsible for ensuring this is done safely and accurately.

RVNs may also be responsible for keeping the laboratory equipment in working order to provide our diagnostic services without any interruption.

👩‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ 😀 SMILE!

We all appreciate the importance of maintaining our pearly whites and our pets need us to support them with this too!

Like human dentistry, pet dental examinations and treatment are about prevention and education, so you’ll be pleased to know that our empowered veterinary Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) are on hand to support you!

🦷 Our RVNs play a vital role in educating, advising and recommending preventative dental care, from how best to brush your pet’s teeth thoroughly, all the way through to advising on a referral with one of our veterinary surgeons if required.

Behind the scenes, RVNs can also carry out dental scale and polishes while patients are under general anaesthesia.

Veterinary surgeons and Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) empower each other to work together to provide holistic care for their patients – your pets.

This can include undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, administering treatments, caring for hospitalised patients and carrying out minor surgical procedures.

RVNs are also required to complete continuing professional development to maintain their knowledge and skills... they play a very significant role in our practice.

The weather has been great recently and no doubt we will see more of the beautiful sunshine over the next few months!

Many of you will be tempted to let your dogs play in the water and even swim in lakes or rivers, which can be great exercise as well as fun for our dogs. But please watch out for water intoxication!

Water intoxication can occur when dogs swallow an excessive amount of water. This can happen when dogs spend time swimming or playing in fresh water, for example when fetching a ball from a lake or even playing in a paddling pool and snapping at the water surface.

When a dog consumes too much water it dilutes the sodium concentration within their blood. This can lead to hyponatremia in dogs which is seriously low levels of sodium in the blood. This encourages the inflow of water into the dog’s cells which can result in swelling. This can also affect the brain leading to damage.

Signs and symptoms include;

Nausea
Lethargy or weakness
Lack of coordination and staggering
Dilated pupils
glazed eyes
Excessive salivation

In severe cases, dogs may also have difficulty breathing, collapse, have a seizure or fall into a coma.
Although rare, it can take hold quickly and can often be fatal.

The best way to prevent water intoxication is to limit the amount of time your dog spends in the water. Encourage your dog to play on land every 10 to 15 minutes to limit their risk of swallowing too much water and also by discouraging them from snapping at the water surface and retrieving items from the water line.

If you are concerned about water intoxication, please contact your vet straight away. 🐾

Have you checked out the benefits of LASER therapy?

LASER therapy is one of our most popular modalities, whether it’s used as part of arthritis management plan, for pain relief or for optimising wound healing post surgery. This unit is incredibly beneficial for our patients. Our KLASER Unit is one of the most powerful units on the market.

LASER therapy stimulates the body’s inherent healing mechanisms via a process called photobiomodulation. Through a combination of different wavelengths, power and frequency of laser light K-LASER is able to achieve improved healing times, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.

This type of therapy has been utilised in human and animal medicine for many decades, however recent technical advances in laser miniaturisation has allowed laser therapy to be used for a wider range of patients.

⭐️ NEW SERVICE ALERT! ⭐️

We now offer acupuncture at The Wellness Centre and Oak Barn Vets!

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine, solid needles into the body to help manage pain relief or, in some cases, to help the body deal with other diseases.

It works through the nervous system blocking the pain messages and encouraging the brain and central nervous system to produce more of the body’s natural pain killers.

While this treatment stimulates nerves, it does not cause unpleasant feelings of pain.

As you can see from our photos, Marla is very relaxed during her treatment and shortly after these photos were taken, actually fell asleep!

This is a non-invasive treatment and is carried out in the consult room without the need for sedation; with patients accepting this treatment incredibly well.

Acupuncture has huge benefits for animals with chronic (long term) conditions such as arthritis and back pain.

Courses of acupuncture will vary from
Patient to patient and this will be discussed at your appointment.

Acupuncture is very safe and is performed by our vet, Charlotte Roynane.

For more information, please get in touch to find out more or book your pets appointment.

Pain is expressed in many subtle ways, some of which aren’t always that obvious.

Contrary to popular belief it is very rare for a dog to cry out or yelp when in pain. With many signs being less interactive, moving carefully or perhaps slower than usual even changing their posture due to weakness.

Arthritis is one of the most common causes of pain in dogs, affecting 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years old, and up to 35% of dogs of all ages.

We have developed a mobility score card to help identify whether your pet is showing some of the subtle signs of pain. These are useful to complete prior to your annual check ups as you can then discuss any signs within your check and appropriate treatment can be discussed and implemented.

Mobility score cards are available from our vets and from the main Oak Barn reception as well as The Wellness Centre.

Getting young dogs used to the water can be very beneficial, not just for stimulation and fun but also preparing for potential eventualities in the future and also as part of body development.

Mulberry has been trialing out the hydro as part of his development of hind limb awareness. Young dogs between 4-6m do not have any hindlimb strength, as he intends to work we have started very gentle strength training exercises to help stimulate his proprioceptive system and slowly build strength. It’s important to remember that at 6m his skeleton is still very soft and his body skeletally immature, therefore it is essential that sessions are short and not too taxing on his body to prevent injury.

Arthritis is an insidious disease that often comes on slowly and silently. Because of this slow onset it can be difficult to recognise signs and changes in your pet until there is quite a bit of deterioration in the condition.

There are always clues to arthritis and the key is to recognise the signs ASAP.

🐾slowing down
🐾struggling to get up from rest
🐾gait changes
🐾postural changes
🐾seeming depressed / quiet
🐾short tempered
🐾excessive licking

These are signs that can indicate pain and discomfort. If you notice any of these changes, please book an appt with your vet to discuss further.

Although arthritis can not be cured, there are lots of approaches to its management including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, KLaser and Acupuncture.

“just getting old” or “just slowing down” these are common terms used to describe dogs or any animal that isn’t running around or doing as much as they used to. While these can just be part of the ageing process they can also be a huge indicator for pain associated with arthritis!
Recognising key signs early on and speaking to your veterinary team can ensure that you are putting the appropriate steps in place to ensure that your pet is comfortable and pain free.

Here at The Wellness Centre we offer a range of services from Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy to K Laser.

We can’t cure arthritis but we can manage this disease to slow down its progression through a multimodal approach.

It can also be for fun and fitness sessions for dogs that just love water, need to maintain their fitness or for competiton dogs that need to be kept at their peak fitness level.

16/03/2022

Diagnosis is key to setting up a thorough treatment plan for the management of arthritis.

There are different ways to diagnose arthritis but all are reliant on the owner, noticing that their dog ‘is ‘slowing down’ or is ‘getting old’.

Dogs tend to show subtle signs that they are in discomfort. These could be as subtle as a change in energy levels, in their posture, how they walk or run, sometimes it can be as subtle as their capability to get onto the bed or sofa. Their muscle distribution may also change. It is important that you notice these changes to make a diagnosis possible.

If you suspect arthritis or have noticed any of these changes in your dog, we recommend that you book an appointment with your vet to have a thorough examination. There are other conditions that can look very similar in their presentation but these require different treatments.

A thorough approach to accurately diagnosing arthritis in your dog might be as follows:

🐾 Identify changes in energy levels, behaviour, gait and mobility.
🐾 Consultation and full physical examination with your vet
🐾 Further investigations at your vets – such as Blood Tests, Urine Samples, X-rays or referral for CT Scans and sometimes Joint Fluid Collection
🐾 Assessment of response to treatment on anti-inflammatory medication

This will allow for a thorough plan for your individual dog can be created, taking into account the severity of the disease.

It is important to note that If this level of veterinary care is not available or affordable, the veterinary surgeon can still diagnose arthritis with some accuracy as the most consistent signs are altered activity levels and behaviours, pain, swelling and restriction in range of motion in one or more joints, and also the changes in the way a dog walks, runs an even how it sits and lays down. Do always ask your vet for advice as guess work can have disastrous results.

It can be a very difficult to notice arthritis as it tends to be insidious and comes on slowly. Looking for signs of arthritis which are often put down to ‘slowing down’ or ‘just getting old’ are key to early diagnosis. If you notice these or have any concerns, we recommend that you have a discussion with your vet.

14/03/2022

One of the most important aspects of the rehabilitation process is to isolate and treat the pain and discomfort that the animal is suffering from. In order to do this veterinary physiotherapists work alongside your vet, enabling us to assist with the management once a diagnosis has been established and a pain management plan has been put in place.

Once a diagnosis has been achieved we can then assess the patient for muscular dysfunction as well as any proprioceptive issues. This will allow us to formulate a suitable treatment programme which is likely to include manual therapies, electrotherapies as well as therapeutic exercises.

Many of the bespoke treatment plans that we put into place involve simple home exercises for the owner to complete. These form a very important part in re-establishing normal function.

Please note that although we advocate the use of therapeutic exercises and equipment as part of a management plan, it is important that you consult your vet and a veterinary physiotherapist before implementing them into daily routines.

For further information or to book a physio consultation please get in touch with Kerrie - [email protected] / 01483 455355

When we look at treatment management plans for our arthritic patients, we ensure that their weight is monitored. It’s important to keep our pets in top shape!

Obesity can exacerbate the signs of arthritis. If your dog is over weight, loosing as little as 5% of their weight can make a significant impact on their mobility and their pain levels.

Weight loss is not only free but could actually save you money in treats and excessive portions of food. Long term it could even delay the need for other treatments like pain killers or physical therapies.

Speak to your Vet or Veterinary Nurse if you're unsure about your dogs weight. Your vet practice team can assist you in helping your pet shed those excess pounds.

At The Wellness Centre, we have a team of dedicated RVN's who have a lot to offer - if you’d like further information and support, contact them directly on 01483 455355 / [email protected]

Post operative rehabilitation should never be underestimated.
Just like us, animals also benefit hugely from rehabilitation after a surgical procedure.
After the initial period of rest, hydrotherapy is an excellent form of rehabilitation often used alongside physiotherapy as they complement each other well.
Buoyancy within the underwater treadmill helps to decrease pain and minimises the weight placed on the joints and muscles. Hydrostatic pressure can reduce oedema, pain and swelling of post op areas.
Hydrotherapy can also create phastic stimuli to the sensory skin receptors, which causes a decrease in hypersensitivity. This is hugely beneficial as this reduction in pain perception allows patients to move with greater confidence enhancing their rehabilitation process.
For more information or to book please contact Kerrie - [email protected] / 01483 455355
