This is an interesting case of a mare with a hock pathology that likely stemmed from an old trauma causing short collateral ligament avulsion (tearing away), then developing a degree of degenerative joint arthritis (an ‘inflammation’, not ‘infection’), a form inter-tarsal osteoarthritis (akin to bone spavin).

You may notice the modified bulging profile of this hock, which to palpation presents relatively firm, cold and not painful to palpation. The mare’s gait at trot is somewhat stiff and she can only achieve a partial flexion of the limb but is overall comfortable and ‘field-sound’.

Similar hock conditions in elderly horses may occasionally cause difficulty to stand from a recumbent position, especially in the colder months of the year. In such cases, it is always worth discussing if and which anti-inflammatory therapy can make the difference, for instance oral or intra-articular.

Lovely day at Cranleigh Show. Lovely to see all the competitors and their wonderful horses and ponies. 'Rare breeds' demonstration. The majestic Carthusian horse PRE stallion (Pura Raza Espanola) was a firm favourite amongst the crowds and an excellent example of his breed.

One of our clients runs a Welsh A stud farm in the heart of Surrey. Due to the little size of these mares, intrarectal ultrasonography for pregnancy evaluation may not be possible, so in this case we performed transabdominal ultrasound scans for feto-placenta monitoring. This technique can be successfully carried out from day 100 gestation to term. In this video our scan shows the fetal heart beat and blood vessels on pre- and post- colour doppler examination. Doppler ultrasound is a non invasive technology used to measure blood flow by showing different colours on the screen. Congratulations Joshua James Farrell at Tom's Farm for your five pregnancies and good luck with this year's shows! 🐴

2024 NEW RULES FOR PRIMARY VACCINATION COURSES !

As the competition season is almost on, we would like to remind our clients that the guidelines for influenza vaccinations differ between various organisations, and that whilst BHA rules have not changed since 2023, FEI, BE, BD, BS, PC and BRC have introduced new intervals for all the primary vaccination courses starting after 1st January 2024.

These are the new intervals:

1st Vaccination
2nd Vaccination: 21-60 days from 1st Vacc
3rd Vaccination: 120-180 days from 2nd Vacc

The subsequent boosters intervals will remain within 12 months, except for BHA rules which remain within 6 months.

FEI and BE require that a vaccination must be administered within 6 months and 21 days prior to arriving at a competition.

Tolerance for competitions remains as follows:
- horses can compete from 7 days after the 2nd vaccination
- horses cannot compete within 7 days after any vaccination

Primary vaccination courses started before 1st January 2024 can follow either the new intervals schedule or the old intervals, although it may be safe to consult the guidelines form each relevant organisation.

We wish this post to serve as general notice for the recently changed rules, but we kindly advise that Owners are solely responsible for ensuring that their horses’ vaccinations remain within the correct intervals.

We are of course always happy to help, so please in case of queries or to book your vaccinations do not hesitate to call us on 01306 249944 or 01737 450506, we will be delighted to hear from you!

At Surrey Hills Equine Veterinary Practice we pride ourselves on providing an independent service tailored to suit all of our patients. We can provide services to the biggest and the smallest of your equine friends.

As you can see from the pictures, sometimes this will require being knelt on the floor to complete a routine dental exam, or having to hold the head at eye level whilst stood up to allow us to reach the back of the mouth for a complete routine rasp.

If you have any questions or special requirements for horses and ponies who are big, small or anything in between please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss treatment requirements.
