Hazel the Labrador assistance dog
We have many owner trained assistance dogs come to stay with us for residential training. It's a great way to focus on specific training struggles, work towards their Awards or fine-tune any tasks they need to master.
Hazel the Labrador joined us last month for a 2 week assistance dog residential stay. Her owners have already worked so hard with her but were struggling with her focus around other people and properly settling in public.
We have worked really hard on teaching Hazel to settle without the need to be rewarded with food all the time. We have also mastered her emergency stop cue and is now able to stop and lie down at a distance with distractions around her.
We will continue to support Hazel and her owners whenever needed to help them reach their goal of her becoming an assistance dog. Well done Hazel!

Jasper the Labrador puppy training
We often have puppies coming to stay with us for residential training. It's the perfect time to ensure they receive the best start to their training and social skills, so they can grow with their training!
It's much easier to get the training right from the start than it is to undo bad habits later on.
Jasper the Labrador joined us at 17 weeks old whilst his family were away. He was starting to pull on the lead, wasn't very motivated for food treats and didn't respond to his name.
Over his 2 week stay he has learn how to walk nicely on the lead, to have a reflex response to his name and to respond to a wide variety of obedience cues
Watch his video below to see his progress after just 2 weeks of intensive training with us!

Socialisation is always a balance, it’s not all about greeting and interacting with everyone, it’s also about learning how be neutral to other dogs and how to cope in a variety of social situations. Teaching your dog to calmly ignore most people they pass on the street is just as important as letting them politely interact with a few people too. Likewise, teaching them to ignore several dogs on every walk will build an invaluable skill for daily life, where greeting every dog is simply not possible or appropriate……………………………..Under-socialisation is a risk too, if you don’t carefully expose your puppy to a variety of environments and social interactions, they won’t learn the skills they need to cope later in life……………………………………………Again, it’s all a balance. Too few social experiences can be just as negative as too many or badly managed ones. Poor social skills can come from a lack of experience as well as negative experiences so it’s important to find the right balance and encourage positive greetings with suitable dogs and people (i.e. ones who will teach good skills and manners!)………………………………….If you have a dog who reacts with barking, lunging or other frustrated behaviours when they can’t greet another dog, it doesn’t mean they’ve not been socialised enough, it just means they haven’t learnt the skill of coping with frustration in these moments. A dog who has been socialised with an emphasis on greeting and interacting with lots of other dogs, especially if this has involved lots of time playing, will also need to learn how to read signals from other dogs and how to respond and respect these appropriately. This can often be seen in dogs who have attended day-care, especially if it’s a large day-care centre or one with an emphasis on the dogs playing and interacting for a large part of the day. See the Comments for the link to our our blog on how to find a balance w
Ethel the Goldendoodle
Ethel the 6 month old Goldendoodle has returned home after a 2.5 week assistance dog residential stay with us.
Ethel’s owner has already put an incredible amount of time into her, she should be so proud of what she’s already achieved.
There were a few areas that needed a little more work and now she’s set to be the most amazing dog. Even better than she already was.
We’ve improved Ethels lead walking skills and helped improve her recall around distractions.
Walking Ethel was the biggest challenge as she did get very distracted and could be a little full on when out and about.
Now she’s much more focussed and keen to please while out on her daily walks.
Ethel you’re going to be the best assistance dog for your owner. Smashing it 💪❤️

Multi dog household?
Dogs feed off each other. You can’t ‘fix’ one without working with the other. Some dogs will be more easily influenced than others, so you may be lucky and have individuals who aren’t affected by each other’s behaviour or you may have one who quickly responds to the other. ………………………………See the comments below for a link to our Managing Multidog Households blog with our top tips for improving household behaviour, barking at the door or going for walks together! ………………………………………Did you know, we often have housemates join us for residential training stays so we can improve the behaviour of all the dogs in the home at the same time!? ………………………….Get in touch with us to get a quote for more than one dog to stay with us for training!

Albie and Olive have returned home after a successful 6 week residential training stay with us.
Both Olive and Albie had become extremely reactive after a residential stay with another company. Although they were displaying signs of nervousness prior to that stay, their behaviour became much worse due to the training methods that were used to kerb their barking!!
This resulted in them both feeding off of each others emotions and making a lot of noise during times of uncertainty.
They both barked at people, men in particular, they barked at dogs non stop, they barked at visitors to the house and any unfamiliar sounds around them. They both needed some confidence building and to regain trust in their handler.
We’ve now come to the end of their stay and both dogs have done incredibly well. They will need ongoing support and guidance but boy they’ve started to shine. Because of the improvements they’ve made they can now enjoy life to the fullest. They can think much more clearly rather than resorting to what has previously worked for them.
Overall they are much more responsive and confident with the life that’s going on around them. We wish them both the very best of luck when they return home. ❤️💙

Nymphadora the Cockapoo assistance dog
Nymphadora the Cockapoo is training to become an assistance dog and joined us for a 4 week residential stay to help her family to progress her training.
An important skill for her to learn was to be able to walk confidently beside a wheelchair and respond to cues from there too.
Her trainer has spent 4 weeks teaching her a range of obedience cues and the skills needed to walk nicely on the lead and to come when called, and then transferred this training to the wheelchair, making it easier for her family to take over her training
Watch her video below to see her progress!

Bear the assistance dog in training
Bear the Cavapoo has completed his 2 week assistance dog residential stay. Bear started getting worried about men fairly recently and he generally lacks in confidence therefore a large amount of his stay consisted of confidence building in environments which he finds overwhelming.
We also worked heavily on Bear’s focus and interest around other dogs. He’s hit adolescence and is very distracted by his hormones around other dogs. Now bear has much more focus around dogs and can disengage much easier.
With continued exposure and confidence building he hope that Bear will pass his temperament test in time. However, right now ensuring he’s happy and relaxed in his surroundings is priority before he progresses onto assistance training in these types of environments.
Good luck little Bear! 🐻

Arlo the Goldendoodle training
Arlo the 9 month old mini Goldendoodle is heading back home after completing his 2 week assistance dog residential stay to help with his behaviour around other dogs and general confidence.
As Arlo is maturing he’s been showing some conflicted behaviour around other dogs where he feels very worried when other dogs approach and will bark but he also wants to say go over and say hello. When other dogs come into his space he doesn’t know what else to do but to run frantically which looks at though he’s playing but he really panics.
Therefore, during Arlo’s stay we’ve worked on changing his emotional response when he sees other dogs so instead of fixating and worrying, he now looks to his hander for support.
We also worked on Arlo’s recall, loose lead walking and focused ‘heel’ cue. He’s made great progress but will need ongoing training to help him around other dogs, especially when they’re in close proximity to him.
Arlo’s owner now has the tools to keep up his training and we will continue to support them going forward. We will see them in a few weeks for a second handover session. Good luck Arlo!

Freddy the poodle has completed his 4 weeks residential training, he's a great character who loves life! However, he has become progressively more fearful of being groomed and handled, this meant neither the groomer or his owners were able to fully groom him.
During his training, we focused on building Freddy's confidence with being groomed and teaching him more skills to to signal any discomfort and move away without needing to snap or bite. His owners had put great foundations in place so we built further on this, allow Freddy to control handling sessions and not feel overwhelmed.
