It was a pig-in-a-blanket kinda day!
We have attended our first fly strike of the year. Be vigilant with your sheep. Sheep should receive a fly strike prevention pre shearing (usually 6 weeks pre-shearing). As the weather warms up and we get close to shearing sheep are high risk for strike.
Keep an eye on elancos strike risk forecast below...

Vetlife is the charity we are donating too this month. I is a brilliant charity that provides emotional, financial and mental health support to the veterinary community. check them out https://www.vetlife.org.uk/
Have you booked your shearer yet? π Here are a couple of other things to consider at this time of year. Unusually, we are still seeing some high worm burdens in camelids - it seems it hasn't quite been cold enough to kill off eggs and larvae on pasture.
Weβve seen a recent increase in reports of livestock worrying across Surrey. This happens when a dog worries or attacks animals such as sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, goats and horses. Livestock such as sheep are particularly sensitive, and often die from the shock of being worried or chased.
Even if a dog only barks at or chases an animal and doesnβt touch it, this is still livestock worrying and can be hugely traumatic for the animal involved. If you are walking your dog in the countryside, you are responsible for them. Please keep them under control at all times. Even on a lead, dogs can still worry livestock.
Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, officers can seize and detain a dog where they have reasonable cause to believe that the dog has been worrying livestock on agricultural land; and no person is present who admits to being the owner of the dog.
If your dog attacks an animal, you should make efforts to find the farmer who owns the livestock and explain what has happened. Livestock are a valuable part of a farmerβs livelihood, so livestock worrying is a real concern for them. As a last resort, farmers can shoot any dog worrying their livestock if it cannot be brought under control, so to keep your four-legged friend safe, always keep them on a lead when passing livestock.
If you see livestock worrying in progress, call 999. You can also report any rural crime anonymously to the Crimestoppers Rural Crime Hotline on 0800 783 0137. Please remember to Respect, Protect and Enjoy our countryside this winter.

We've been hanging out with this handome chap today for a blood check as part of ongoing monitoring.
When we talk testicles we're not talking utter bo****ks π ...we care about teeth, toes and temperament too!!
Did we mention it's ram pre-breeding MOT time?
Rams have a big impact on your flocks performance. pre-breeding examinations are really important in identifying sub-fertile rams and giving you enough time to fix the problems or find a replacement. If you havent yet booked your ram pre-breeding exam you still have time
We're used to dealing with angry cows in our line of work but don't expect them driving mercedes on the school run. We know we have big vehicles, they help us do our job. We do our best to park considerately but some of us have kids to drop off at school too and we will be parking (legally) on the roads near school and don't expect to be rammed up the arse because you have had to wait 2 seconds to pull into your drive while we close the doors. Our general advice would be...don't ram a truck with your wee mercedes and just be nice π
When your clients notice that you have a bad habit of gluing yourself to your patients when putting in IV cannulas (we glue them in) and provide the solution π€©
As part of our practice ethos we try to give back into the community and industry that we not only work in but are grateful to be a part of. Give us your vote via the poll on our previous on where we should direct a donation this month. Please do check out all of these charities which provide awesome support for those in agriculture

Congratulations to Lissie on passing her camelid certificate!! With special thanks to British Camelids for sponsoring her and her family for putting up with her for the last 3 years!! Well done Lissie Gercke BVSc CertAVP(CP) MRCVS

When your day off looks suspiciously like your day on clinics just with a baby in tow
We've been out castrating Check out their fabulous YouTube channel to follow farm life https://youtu.be/V35VtidrHao
We are really grateful for such a lovely client base! Especially those who leave us flowers and chocolate. It makes our day even better knowing that all of our sliding about in the s**t and the mud, delivering babies left right and centre, giving advice down the phone whilst fi***ng a cow etc is appreciated!!
De-antlering time! These castrated chaps often retain their antlers. Antler shedding is under the control of testosterone (amongst other hormones). If the antlers do not shed they can develop abnormal growths. These guys often don't shed their velvet and there can be a significant blood supply. We de-antlered these guys under a standing/sitting sedation with local nerve blocks and cautery haemostasis.
Little bit of synchronised disbudding this week π
Aaahh Spring!! While the weather would have us believe it is still winter we know this is lies as we can't go do a routine disbudding sesh without an impromptu kidding first to untangle a kid presenting with its spine blocking the pelvis.
This pygmy goat was seen for a suspected abscess. On examination the cavity was full of feed material which had likely forced it's way up through a fistula caused by a tooth root abcess. Definitely not what we were expecting to find!
Anyone else know that feeling of ludicrous relief when the kids favourite sheep lambs without disaster, death or destruction?!!
We've been having a bit of a castration marathon this week including this chap. No more jingle balls here π¦π¦
Ollie got to hang out with this awesome chap last week for a check up after seeing him a few weeks ago for an abscess
When you arrive on farm and get the feeling someone is watching you π

Dagging vs crutching! It's that time of year when we need to be thinking fly strike prevention. For those of us still to lamb it is also an opportunity to tidy our ewes up pre lambing for hygiene purposes. These ewes have low worm egg counts and their recent scour is most likely a result of a move to lusher pasture. There's no further treatment required on top of this little bit of shearing. #vetting #vet #veterinarian #veterinary #farmtime #farmvetlife #farmvet #farminglife #farming #farmlife #sheepvet #sheepvet #sheep #spring #followus
Following on from our toe granuloma post. We try and fix these with a regional anaesthetic block. We pare away the horn around the granuloma, remove the granuloma and cauterise the base. Pain killers are given plus an antibiotic if there is evidence of foot rot.the end result is a claw that is restored to near normalness and after a couple of days of tenderness lameness should resolve. #agriculture #backbritishfarming #vetting #ukfarming #farminguk #farmtime #farm #farmlife #vetlife #farmvetlife #veterinarian #farmvet #veterinary #vet #farming #livestock #sheepfarm #sheepvet #sheep #sheepfarming #followus

We've been asked about the gloves we use in fertility work and AI. You can buy the gloves with loops to hold them up or use this nifty little hack we were all taught as baby vets that keeps the glove on your arm π

Charlie has been sorting out this epic beaut of an abscess at one of the farms she looks after through Green Counties! These abscesses can come up really fast and usually heal up nicely with a bit of help
We love catching up with all the cria from this year for their vaccinations and check ups. This little lady has perfected harassment - 'mum mum mum mum mum, feed me feed me feed me feed me!!!' #alpacasofinstagram #alpacas #cria #farmtime #farmvet #farmvetlife #alpacavet #feedme #followus
Happy Friday everyone!! We thought it was about time for another vet phone photo reel!! Thanks for the weird, wonderful and utter mingingness (with a little bit of normal thrown in for good measure) that you fill our phones with! Without you our lives would be boring! Enjoy π
Simple things float our boat. Simple things like the C-section kid twigging (eventually!!) what teats are for and a nasty constipation case taking a massive dump! A quick snap shot of a temporary jugular catheter placement. This cria was born with only a fraction of the white blood cells he should have. He was also diagnosed to have a failure of passive transfer (immunity from his mums colostrum) and so received a plasma transfusion yesterday evening. He is on various medical support while we investigate the route cause of his problems. He is a little fighter and is doing his best at feeding and putting on weight like a trooper.
We've been helping out this little cria who was born at term but with signs of dysmaturity. She's had trouble with her suck reflex, thermoregulation and hypoglycaemia. Thankfully her bloods indicated that everything else was working well and after a lot of TLC from her owner she is gaining weight and running around.
