What do you know about Psyllium Husk?๐ค
Norfolk is renowned for its loose, sandy soils which during the summer when the land dries out, when we then have heavy rainfall, the rain splashes dirt onto the grass surface which is subsequently ingested by our horses.
Psyllium Husk can aid in the removal of sand by going from a solid pellet to a tacky form through the gastrointestinal tract which in turn carries the sand out into the horses faeces. This is why it's so important to feed psyllium dry!
Colonaid is a psyllium formulation which comes as a palatable pellet which is fed for 7 days on, 21 days off, for a preventative management course.
Clinical signs of sand accumulation can present as colic symptoms, diarrhoea, altered appetite and increased periods of recumbency.
๐If you have any concerns regarding sand or would like to speak to a member of reception about Colonaid, please call the surgery on 01603 899930.

As horses spend more time stabled with forage and hard feed-based diets, the risk factors for developing equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) increases substantially! ๐
Clinical signs of EGUS are wide-ranging, and can be difficult to separate from other behaviours, but can include:
๐ Altered behaviour
๐ Girthiness
๐ Bucking under saddle
๐ Altered faeces
๐ Weight / condition loss
๐ Change in coat
If you are concerned your horse may be displaying symptoms of EGUS - be sure to get in touch with us straight away, as diagnosis, treatment and prevention are all steps which need to be considered on a case-by-case basis! ๐

When entire flocks of birds get sick, this is how our vets can narrow down the cause...๐
By selecting around three of the sick birds, we are able to check their intestines for any parasites or bugs that may be affecting the entire flock, hopefully helping to find the root of the problem and submit a solution.
