Donaldson's Vets

Donaldson's Vets It is a Tier 2 RCVS accredited practice ensuring our facilities and staff training are up to modern standards. If this is an issue please get in touch.

The practice was established in 1985 by Chris and Eleanor Dale with the aim of providing high quality veterinary treatment for domestic pets within a personal and caring environment. This is a voluntary quality assurance scheme, involving a rigorous inspection of the practice carried out by a veterinary inspector appointed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. We care deeply about our patie

nts, and are committed to ensuring they receive the treatment and attention we would expect our own pets to receive. We also offer a speedy and efficient referral service for colleagues dealing with problem skin cases. Facilities are available for the investigation and treatment of all types of skin disease including intradermal skin testing. A full written history, or a copy of the clinical notes, is required as are all relevant laboratory reports. Ideally treatment should be withdrawn at least 7 days before the first appointment. Referring veterinary surgeons are sent a prompt written report after each examination.

Benefits of Vaccinations šŸ’‰šŸ¶

Why Should I Vaccinate My Dog?
Our dogs love to explore the world around us and they are likely to come in contact with infectious diseases. Vaccines help your dog’s immune system learn how to recognise and fight off harmful diseases that can be very serious or even fatal.

Why Do We Still Need Vaccines for Rare Diseases?
Even though some diseases don’t happen very often, they can still be found in various countries. Vaccinating our pets helps keep these diseases from spreading. If we stop vaccinating our pets, these diseases could come back and could lead to outbreaks.

Health Check-Ups
Your dog will always get a health examination when they come in for their vaccinations. As your dog grows from a puppy to an adult and into old age, their health needs may change. Your vet can guide you on how often these check-ups will be required to keep your dog healthy.

When should I vaccinate my dog?
Vaccinating your puppy at an early age, ideally around 6 to 8 weeks, is crucial for providing them with essential protection from diseases before they can take hold. This process typically involves two initial vaccinations. It's vital to maintain your pet's immunity as it grows with regular booster shots throughout their life to help them remain healthy and safeguarded against potential illnesses.

Does My Dog Need a Booster?
Your dog's protection will need to be maintained; over time, the protection your dog gets from vaccines can fade. For some diseases, your dog will need a booster shot every year. Your veterinarian will tell you what boosters are needed based on your dog's specific situation and the risks they might face.

World Kidney Day 2025 - Are your pets kidneys, okay?

Let’s raise awareness and take action against kidney disease! 🐱🐶

Our kidneys filter waste, control blood pressure, regulate electrolytes, and produce erythropoietin for red blood cell production. Recognising their vital role emphasises the importance of addressing kidney disease together.

Why is early detection important? šŸ’•šŸ§‘ā€šŸ”¬

Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) do not always show until the disease is advanced, which is why it is often diagnosed with routine blood and urine tests.
• Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference to a pet's health
• Many pets with kidney disease are older, but it can also affect younger pets

Symptoms
* Increased thirst and urination
* Decreased appetite
* Vomiting
* Bad breath
* Lethargy
* Weight loss
These symptoms are commonly seen with CKD, but also with other medical conditions, so it is critical to contact your vet if your pet shows any of these signs.

How to protect your pet's kidneys

🐾Keep harmful substances out of the reach of your pets. These include but are not limited to lilies, grapes, raisins, antifreeze, and certain pain medications.

🐾Make sure your pet has access to fresh and clean water on a regular basis

🐾Follow a specially formulated diet for Kidney disease; don’t make any adjustments before speaking to your vet.

🐾Maintain regular dental checks - Periodontal disease has been shown to increase a dog’s risk of developing renal failure. Regular teeth brushing can help to prevent this.

🐾Reduce your pet's stress levels; anxious pets tend to drink fewer fluids

For more information on Kidney health and detection, please speak with one of your vets.šŸ¤

⚠ While we admire the joyous beauty the daffodil brings to our gardens, Pet owners must be aware that daffodils are toxic to both dogs and cats. ⚠

The most dangerous parts of daffodils are the bulbs. Daffodil (narcissus) poisoning occurs from ingesting any part of the bulb, flower, leaves or stem, or from drinking the water from a vase.

If you think your pet has ingested any part of the daffodil or bulb, please contact your vet immediately for advice; DON’T wait for the symptoms to show.
The sooner your pet is treated, the better their chance of recovery.

Symptoms of Daffodil poisoning

⚠Drooling or slobbering
⚠Nausea or retching
⚠Sleepy or wobbly
⚠Vomiting
⚠Diarrhoea
⚠Rapid breathing
⚠Faster than normal heart rate
⚠Seizures
