Had the sweetest little Yorkie called Pebbles in today for a bath and tidy. Absolutely melted my heart โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ A beautiful & lovely natured Yorkie that hasnt had the best start in life but has now has found a new home with owners that will care & provide a loving home for her.

Managed to bath, towel dry her and tidy her face, but she just wouldn't stay still for an after pic.

I have nothing but absolute admiration & respect for owners that that provide a new home for rescues like Pebbles. It helps restore my faith in humanity to provide for them & makes my job even more rewarding to provide a little pamper for them where I can. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ›โœ‚๏ธ

I have had a few pooches come to me recently that I have had no option than to shave completely. This can be upsetting for myself and the dog as de matting pulls on the dogs skin which is distressing for them.

Please be aware the longer you wish to keep your dogs coat, the more often your dog needs to be groomed. I advise that all long haired breeds should be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. Poodle coats should be groomed every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain the coat and prevent matting.

It is essential that you start brushing your pup from as early as possible to get them used to being groomed. Also bathing and using a hair dryer with them at home helps them greatly with the whole grooming experience.

Do you leave your dog longer between grooming appointments because you like the length of the coat a month or more after their haircut but then when you visit the groomer they say they have no option but to take the coat short?

This is because a longer coat means more maintenance is required and most pet owners start to struggle to keep the coat matt free after a certain amount of weeks.

One week can actually mean the difference between your dog being styled or being shaved.

So the only way to keep the coat longer is to actually bring them more regularly to keep the coat knot and tangle free and to make sure the groom is not too much for your dog.

If your dog doesnโ€™t really enjoy going to the groomers it is much kinder to keep them on a regular schedule so that:

1. The groom isnt as difficult and less for your dog to cope with on each session.

2. Your dog sees routine as a regular part of life and every now and then as more of a punishment. Dogs thrive on regular routine.

Recommending a more regular schedule is not for me to make as much money as possible, it is actually so I can give the groom you desire while at the same time keeping grooming a positive and stress free experience for your dog.

Thank you for your understanding.

As the weather is getting warmer your pooches are probably feeling more uncomfortable therefore it is important to keep upto regular grooming for long haired breeds.

All long haired breeds should be brushed regularly down to the skin and should be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain their coat and prevent matting. The more often they can be bathed at home and dried with a hair dryer the more they will get used to being professionally groomed. This will be better for your dog as they will be less anxious when they come to the parlour.

As I am getting busier now I advise to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Thanks for your continued support.

Hi everyone, hope your pups are doing well.

I just wanted to do a little post on this, but if I ever do refuse a groom or recommend trying an alternative groomer then it is always done so with the best interests of your dog at heart and please never to take it personally or anything against your dog. Your dogs welfare will always be 100% my main priority.

As we all know our dogs are very instinctive creatures and develop patterns of behaviours quite quickly that are sometimes hard to change. Sometimes their instincts are correct and quite often they are wrong too (I know a few road cones and postmen that get a good barking at from our Odie alone! ๐Ÿ˜„ )

Whilst grooming is a technical job, so much more of it is about developing a good trust relationship with your dog. This is especially important with anxious dogs that I can build & maintain that relationship with your dog on a regular basis. So many dogs I have here do respond amazingly well to the one2one grooming and I have had so many nervous dogs completely transform from being nervous shy little pups to being confident happy and loving about their groom.

On ocassions I even have your dogs here directing me as to what comes next. ๐Ÿ˜„ They trot straight into the parlour, they know when it's towel time, they know when the blower is about to come on and they know they will be safe and looked after when they have a set of scissors trimming their fringe or their paws.

All the dogs I have here are unique, I could go through every single one of your dogs and tell you that they love their towel dry, or they dont like their paws being touched or one of the many lovely little character traits I have gotten to learn with your dogs. Its something we work through together and they build that trust bond with me.

Our dogs senses are incredibly powerful, they pick up all sorts of triggers and small details as a human I can't always know about. It maybe a bottle of shampoo that reminds them of something they didnt like, the scent of a cat walking by in the distance, or something on the tabletop they just don't like the look of. Sometimes of course it can also just be that your pup is unwell, and this often affects their behaviour. Age too is a big factor at times. Whatever the trigger on very rare occasions myself, or something in the parlour may become that 'road cone'.

If their anxiety escalates & dog goes into fight or flight mode it is incredibly difficult to pull them out of and impossible to perform a groom. If that was to happen I will of course always immediately call you and it will likely be asked that you collect your dog as soon as possible.

On the less extreme side there are some smaller traits that will never go away - that can get better or worse depending on how much time we spend together and how often. If I don't get chance to improve that relationship, they can grow to a point where the groom still becomes extremely difficult or impossible to complete on my own, and in these cases I will always report to you at the time of collection and explain ways in which we could try to make it easier next time. This could be something along the lines of your dog loved their groom but hated its nails being clipped, because it hated having its paws touched or held. Some hate the blower because of the noise, but there are little things we can try to get them used to it too.

This isn't something that I can always rectify in a short 1 and a half grooming timeslot and sometimes on occasions a dog will remember feeling anxious when they were last here & this only compounds the issue. Its much more about repetition of the good times, to make it into the positive experience it should be for them. If they don't keep up with regular grooming appointments this can become worse rather than better because that's the association they instantly have when they do return. The more often they come the easier it is for them to forget that association. There is one section of our our pavement on Greenacres that Odie still refuses to walk ok because of a fridge freezer there was out for collection, & scared him when he was a puppy! He might not remember why but he has that association even 5 years later. Its a similar way to that certain smells remind of us things from our childhood or can bring back memories instantly. For our dogs this instinct is constant and much more intense.

This is the reason why sometimes on the rare occasion these traits deterioate to where the dog is becoming more anxious on each visit, I may suggest trying an alternative groomer. Sometimes it maybe the best option as it maybe the only thing that breaks that association and is a fresh start and environment. It is nothing unusual and I have had many customers also come here from other local groomers for the exact same reason, and it has worked.

My commitment to the welfare and happiness of your dog will always be my no1 priority even if that means sadly losing one of your lovely dogs as a customer.

Of course I may also have to refuse a groom on the grounds that I work alone as a groomer and any injuries I sustain could put me out of work for a very long time. Thankfully this has never happened, but is a judgement call I reserve the right to take.

Also please If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ever get in touch with me. Sometimes during opening hours I maybe busy with the dogs but I will always try to get back to you as soon as I possibly can.

Thank-you for your understanding, as always for all your kind support & I always look forward to seeing you & your lovely pups again soon

Becca xx
