We are advising dog owners not to feed their pets specific dog chews from China following concerns from the European Union (EU) of a possible link to serious behavioural changes.

The affected products include 'Barkoo' chews and 'Chrisco' chews. A full list of products can be found here: https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/news/precautionary-advice-issued-to-pet-owners-on-dog-chews-linked-to-illness

Reports from the EU suggest that these products have been potentially linked to dogs experiencing what is known as ‘werewolf syndrome’. Symptoms include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits and in some cases death. There is no confirmed distribution of the chews to the UK and no cases have been detected in the UK.

If you are a dog owner and you have any of these products, please cease feeding your dogs these chews immediately. If your dog is unwell and has been fed any of the dog chews listed, you should seek veterinary advice and provide detailed information to the vet about the foods and treats your dog has been fed.

If you are a vet who suspects any cases associated with dog chews, you can report them through the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) Small Animal Surveillance: https://statics.teams.cdn.office.net/evergreen-assets/safelinks/1/atp-safelinks.html

🐾Say hello to 🥰Odie🥰 the Golden Retriever. He came in to see Vet Caitlin today. She thought he was such a handsome little pup & that the rest of the team needed to meet him ‘out the back’ ….. they were delighted to give him a fuss. We really do have the best job!

🥶⚠️With the weather turning colder we are all no doubt using anti-freeze in the mornings to help us get going 🚗 . However, anti-freeze (otherwise known as ethylene glycol) is extremely toxic to both humans and pets if ingested. Make sure your pets and children are well out of the way.
❌Animals only need to ingest a small amount to become unwell❌
Cats can walk through spilt liquid on the pavement then accidentally ingest it whilst grooming, others may lick it off of the bottom of the car as it drips off, attracted to its sweet taste. Other places they may ingest it accidentally is when it is used in ornamental ponds and water features where they might drink.
🆘If you suspect your cat or dog has ingested any please phone us, or your usual vet for advice ASAP. Do not delay.
Signs of ingestion can be lethargy, collapse, salivation & drinking excessively.

⚠️Ingestion of ethylene glycol can result in acute kidney failure and death⚠️

The sooner your pet receives veterinary treatment the better the outcome.

It is a sad fact that, with the arrival of winter comes an increase in the number of cats poisoned by antifreeze.

Most antifreeze solutions (often used in cars in the winter) are based on a product called ethylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is very toxic to all animals when ingested, causing rapid and frequently fatal injury to the kidneys.

Cats are particularly susceptible due to their specialised metabolism. Cats only need to drink a teaspoon or less of antifreeze for it to cause serious illness and even death. So a curious lick or two from a small spillage could be enough to cause serious poisoning.

International Cat Care has produced a free poster warning of the dangers of antifreeze to cats. This can be used to raise awareness of this issue and provides advice on keeping cats safe.

The poster can be downloaded for free here: https://icatcare.org/sites/default/files/PDF/antifreeze-campaign-poster.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2XPmjZfdAwW4n8ggSjIaKu7hOt23XukrQH-S_oK3scSXBjA9_i6DKL200

Or order a free printed version and just pay the postage: https://icatcare.org/product/antifreeze-poster.

Our advice is as follows. To avoid accidental poisonings:
• Clean up any spills immediately, no matter how small, and make sure pets cannot access the area until it is clean and safe.
• Never add antifreeze to garden water-features or ponds.
• Always keep antifreeze in clearly labelled, robust, sealed containers, away from pets and their environment.
• Always dispose of antifreeze safely and responsibly. Contact your local authority for advice.

If your pet shows any of the following signs take them to a vet immediately:
• Increased urination
• Increased drinking
• Vomiting
• Depression
• Lethargy (being abnormally sleepy)
• Appearing drunk and uncoordinated
• Seizures (fitting)
• Abnormally fast heartbeat
• Very fast, shallow breathing

The sooner veterinary treatment is received, the better their chances of survival. If left untreated pets can suffer, and will die.

Help us to raise awareness of this serious risk and keep cats safe this winter.

🥰🐾Meet Pippin the Cocker Spaniel who belongs to our vet, Rachel. This week, Pippin came in to be spayed. The surgery was performed by Vet Jen, with RVN Alayne closely monitoring her under anaesthesia.

📸In the photo, you can see Pippin waking up from surgery with her beloved toy from home! Rachel reports that Pippin is recovering wonderfully, though she needs frequent reminders to take it easy and rest—no easy task for an energetic young Spaniel!

🐾Lovely little 🥰Nala🥰 came in to be spayed earlier this week.
Her surgery and recovery went well and she was keen to get back to playing, which was lovely to see! We hope she is recovering well at home (with controlled play!) and look forward to seeing her again soon for her post op check.
