From 10 June 2024 all cats in England over 20 weeks old must be and registered on a compliant database and similar legislation is expected to be introduced in Scotland soon.

Whether you’ve just bought a kitten or adopted an older cat, making sure they are microchipped should be top of your list. Microchipping your cat gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you if they are lost or stolen.

Microchips are safe, easy to implant and effective. Unlike collars and ID tags, microchips don’t come off and they don’t put your cat at risk of injury

Unfortunately, we’ve had a deceased male un-neutered DSH black cat handed into the practice. He has no microchip or collar so we have been unable to locate the owner. He was found on Wellhall Road on Tuesday evening. Please call the practice if you think this may be your cat

Feline Hyperthyroidism, a short case study:

“When my cat was 16 years old, I noticed that her appearance and some of her behaviours changed quite suddenly. She was very hungry, her coat wasn’t as sleek and shiny as it had always been and she started to lose weight. I arranged an appointment with the vet and, following an examination and discussion, the vet recommended taking a blood sample to check a variety of things, including her thyroid levels – this was carried out quickly and my cat wasn’t bothered by the procedure.

The vet contacted me the next day with the results. They advised me that she was hyperthyroid and discussed the different treatment options available. I considered the options and decided to try my cat on daily medication; this involves regular checks and repeat blood samples to ensure she is on the correct dose. Her medication dose has changed occasionally over the last year based on her blood results but apart from that she’s doing well.”
