As I know a lot of you are struggling to exercise your horses in this cold weather βοΈ Dr David Marlin shows that exercise in cold weather can actually be detrimental to your animals health. So please don't feel guilty for not managing to ride! π΄π
Cantering and Galloping when temperatures are close to freezing (0C or 32F) causes airway inflammation, exacerbates equine asthma and increase the severity of lung bleeding (EIPH).

βI was pulled from my field, from my work, from my play
Neβer again to see England, in lands far away,
Through death and destruction, through blood sweat and tears,
I carried my master, along with my peers,
So I ask you to remember a while,
Along with the soldiers, in smart rank and file,
Remember our beauty, the strength of our kind,
As we galloped through danger, without care to mind,
For we were the horses thrust into war,
And we gave up our lives for your peace evermoreβ
Lest we forget πΊ

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT RUGGING HORSES!
It's that time of year when WE notice that it's got a little colder and we dig out our fleeces and jumpers. And many of us are likely to do the same for our horses, unpacking the stable and turnout rugs we packed away in late Spring. BUT, horses donβt feel the cold in the same way we do.
Why? The answer is pretty straightforward - they are around 7 times heavier than us and covered in hair. Although they are 7 times heavier they donβt have 7 times more skin surface. In fact, itβs only around 2.5 times more. Skin surface is the key to retaining or losing heat as this is the main route horses lose heat in cooler weather. Thatβs why in nature if you live in a cold climate itβs generally an advantage to be large and if you live in a hot climate itβs an advantage to be small β and yes there are exceptions to this, such as elephants!
So the temptation is to start over-rugging horses at this time of year because we are feeling cold and putting on more layers. Over-rugging may make your horse or pony feel uncomfortable and unhappy. Itβs also not good for coat and skin health and it may even contribute to obesity.
What rug should I use? There are a lot of things to consider and there is no one-size fits all but some general rules do apply.

QUICK UPDATE!
The wonderfully talented Erin at Chestnuts created this brilliant illustration, and we are very grateful that she has allowed us to use it. We chose the image as we think it perfectly depicts Dr Marlin's point in this post. Thank you Erin Chestnuts!

THE HEAT IS COMING - KEEP YOUR ANIMALS SAFE!
This is the current prediction for Monday and Tuesday.
You should not be riding or walking dogs or exercising yourself during the hours of 6am to 9pm on these days.
Do NOT take dogs out in cars except Iin an emergency.
You can wet down your animals if they have to be out but dogs should be inside.
AT NIGHT (starting tonight) - OPEN as many WINDOWS as you safely can.
IN THE DAY - CLOSE all WINDOWS and CLOSE all CURTAINS/SHUTTERS/BLINDS. Your house has good insulation and should be cooler than outside.
Avoid cooking on stoves as this heats the house up. Microwaving or air fryers generate less heat. Or just eat cold food.
