💜 Did you know that we have a free and easy to access toolkit available for veterinary nurses affected by chronic illness?

Our chronic illness toolkit also has lots of information and guidance available for managers and colleagues of those affected by a chronic illness or condition, which is paramount if we want to create more awareness and ensure nurses get the right help in the workplace.

Working in the veterinary profession can be challenging, but even more so if you are suffering from a chronic illness or condition, so we hope that this toolkit helps nurses feel less alone, better understood and more likely to receive the support they need.

Managing pain without opioids: Is it possible?

📆 Wednesday 8th January 2025, 19:00-20:00

One hour of online CPD for Veterinary Nurses! 💻🩺

Opioids have long been the cornerstone of analgesia provision for small animals in the western world. There is good evidence to support their efficacy and in the USA, Europe and the UK there are a few different opioid drugs licensed for use in cats and dogs. Along with licensing comes data to support use and efficacy. Despite their usefulness in small animal analgesia protocols it must be acknowledged that opioids are not readily available worldwide, with restrictions on the veterinary use of opioids being particular rigid in Asia and increasing restrictions in the USA associated with the opioid crisis. There are also a number of different side effects associated with opioid use that are leading to a move to explore more opioid sparing or opioid free analgesia techniques in the veterinary profession.

Learning Points:
✅ Know the side effects of opioids
✅ Learn about alternative drugs to provide analgesia instead of opioids
✅ Know the evidence base for opioid free / sparing analgesia

💎 BVNA is 60: Celebrate our diamond year with us in 2025! 💎

At the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA), we are currently preparing to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the association’s launch, which took place on 1st March 1965.

Ahead of our milestone diamond celebrations in 2025, in this blog we delve into the archives to take a look back at the very beginnings of BVNA’s history; https://bvna.org.uk/blog/bvna-is-60-celebrate-our-diamond-year-with-us-in-2025/

Many things have changed in the past 60 years. Yet our core focus has remained constant – at the heart of everything BVNA stands for, is our members.

Whether you have been working in the VN profession for 5 years or 50, we’d love to hear from any BVNA members who have stories or photos they’d like to share to commemorate this special year with us.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has published a new workforce model for the veterinary professions, aiming to make projections of workforce supply versus demand for veterinary services until 2035.

In response to the report, BVNA President Lyndsay Hughes commented: “BVNA welcomes the work carried out by the RCVS to better understand potential workforce numbers of veterinary professionals over the coming decade. However, we are concerned by the suggestion that the supply of veterinary nurses may exceed demand by 2025. We feel this type of modelling alone does not present a complete picture, and so we encourage the veterinary profession to look at the wider context of how veterinary nurses currently work – and could work in future – in conjunction with this data."

Last week, we launched new guidance surrounding the delegation of Schedule 3 tasks to .

BVNA President, Lyndsay Hughes, commented: “RVNs are highly skilled and trained professionals. Full utilisation of our skillset means we can enhance the delivery of patient care, and do even more to contribute to the veterinary team and business. Importantly, this will also lead to a greater sense of fulfilment and job satisfaction in our roles.

“BVNA looks forward to building upon this work in 2025, as we continue to work to improve interprofessional confidence in delegation to veterinary nurses. Legislative reform is imperative, however positive change within our teams is still very much possible in the meantime.”

As we move towards the New Year, there is a good chance of fireworks going off nearby. Listen to our podcast here, with more advice for pets during fireworks season; https://loom.ly/b8HqtPk

During this podcast, our speakers discuss animal behaviour and fear associated with noise (fireworks in particular). They emphasize that fear is a normal survival instinct and should not be punished, and highlight the importance of understanding why an animal is behaving a certain way. They also emphasize the need for pet owners to prepare their homes ahead of time and help manage their own stress, as the owner's emotions can affect their pet's behaviour.

💗 Our free-to-access menopause toolkit for veterinary nurses provides signposting for support, plus useful resources for those affected by menopause, or working alongside veterinary nurses experiencing menopause.

We strongly believe that all employers should have a menopause policy and put measures in place to ensure veterinary nurses affected by menopause can carry out the job role without feeling embarrassed or worried that menopausal symptoms will interfere with their everyday work life and career progression.

By working together, both employers and employees can make reasonable adjustments in the workplace to provide a menopause-friendly environment that is inclusive for all.

Chronic illness impacts around 26 million individuals in the UK, with 10 million experiencing multiple conditions. In the veterinary sector, approximately 1 in 14 veterinary professionals report having at least one disability or chronic illness that hampers their ability to perform daily tasks. There are likely many more who may feel uncomfortable disclosing their struggles. Why is that? Is it fear of judgment, embarrassment, a lack of support, or concerns about job security?

In her blog "Living with a Chronic Illness in the Veterinary Field: A Guide for Veterinary Nurses," Ailish Copp BSc RVN emphasises that it’s crucial to recognise that admitting to having a disability or chronic illness carries no shame or embarrassment. Read more here; https://loom.ly/LCCss94

BVNA members can have peace of mind with free access to our Members Advisory Service. This helpful support resource is provided to veterinary nurses when things may get a little tricky.

Employment law may be touched upon during veterinary nurse training, but we often aren’t aware of the questions we may have until specific queries arise.

Our Members Advisory Service is delivered by experienced professionals who have been providing expert advice, since 1999, to our members on a range of subjects including legal issues, employment law, redundancy, disciplinary, grievance, contracts, matrimonial and financial matters.

The darker months at this time of year may mean we need to pay extra attention to our mental health during the winter.

The BVNA Mental Health Toolkit is crammed full of resources, articles and lived experiences. We hope it will reassure you that if you are struggling with your mental health, you are certainly not alone.

As part of this project, BVNA Council Member Declan Jones sat down with Tamsin Durston RVN, to record a three-part series on supporting ourselves and others with mental health, imposter syndrome, and dealing with the specific challenges which we can find ourselves navigating in the VN profession.

Why not have a listen, perhaps next time you're driving to work or walking the dog, and take a positive step towards supporting your mental health at this time of year 💚
