Surgical Nursing: The Benefits and Boundaries of a dedicated nurse procedures service
📆 Wednesday 26th March 2025, 19:30 - 20:30

One hour of online CPD for Veterinary Nurses!

🗣️ Speaker: Joseph Bend BSc(Hons) NCert(Dent) RVN

As Registered Veterinary Nurses, we often encounter significant barriers against the effective utilisation of our surgical nursing skills within the remit of the Schedule 3 legislation. This session aims to explore these barriers and promote the benefits of surgical nursing in everyday practice to ensure our skillset goes beyond notes and revision cards of our student training days. We will identify suitable opportunities for beginning a nurse lead surgical nursing service alongside useful tips on performing minor surgical procedures.

Learning Points:
✅ Examine the benefits and boundaries of surgical nursing in relation to Schedule 3 legislation.
✅ Identify strategies for increasing surgical nursing opportunities.
✅ Understand where to begin with performing minor surgical procedures including:
- Placing aural haematoma drains
- Wound debridement/closure
- Small mass removals

Animal interactions and experiences – Are we doing it right for the animals?

During this podcast, the panelists discuss the mental health and welfare of pet animals, particularly in the context of dog shows and cat shows, emphasizing the importance of understanding animal behavior and promoting positive reinforcement in training. They also highlight the need for a holistic approach to animal welfare, considering not only the current state of the animal but also its future development and health. The conversation ends with a discussion on the importance of education and understanding the human-centric world that animals live in.

Looking after our mental health is something we should really invest in, just like with our physical health, all year round. There are lots of things we can do to look after our mental wellbeing every day, and below are some tips that may help;

💚 Get closer to nature - Nature can have a really calming effect on us
💗 Keep moving - Looking after ourselves physically also helps us to prevent mental health issues

💗 Eat nutritious food - Food and drink can affect our bodies, brains and mood
💚 Get more from your sleep - Adults need between 7 and 9 hours’ sleep a night
💗 Listen to an inspiring podcast or book - Gain a new mindset and perspective on the world
💚 Connect with friends and family - Try to talk about your feelings with someone you know
💗 Declutter - Decluttering the space around you can help to reduce stress and burnout
