Managing pain without opioids: Is it possible?

📆 Wednesday 8th January 2025, 19:00-20:00
🗣️ Jo Murrell BVSc.(hons), PhD, DiplECVAA, MRCVS

One hour of online CPD for Veterinary Nurses! 💻🩺

Opioids have long been the cornerstone of analgesia provision for small animals in the western world. There is good evidence to support their efficacy and in the USA, Europe and the UK there are a few different opioid drugs licensed for use in cats and dogs. Along with licensing comes data to support use and efficacy. Despite their usefulness in small animal analgesia protocols it must be acknowledged that opioids are not readily available worldwide, with restrictions on the veterinary use of opioids being particular rigid in Asia and increasing restrictions in the USA associated with the opioid crisis. There are also a number of different side effects associated with opioid use that are leading to a move to explore more opioid sparing or opioid free analgesia techniques in the veterinary profession.

Learning Points:
✅ Know the side effects of opioids
✅ Learn about alternative drugs to provide analgesia instead of opioids
✅ Know the evidence base for opioid free / sparing analgesia

The latest RUMA CA&E Annual Progress Report details the work undertaken by the Alliance and some of its members over the past 12-18 months as well as across the wider CA&E sectors. It also includes the latest data on dogs and cats provided by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and taken from the UK-Veterinary Antibiotic Resistance Sales Surveillance (2023) Report[2].

This report highlights the continued focus and efforts on antimicrobial stewardship underway across the CA&E sectors with reductions in antibiotic use in dogs, and HP-CIA use in cats, between 2022 and 2023.
