It's hot so 'that' post is circulating...
"A vet says don't give your dog ice or it will die!"
For inexplicable reasons people believe this nameless 'vet' and share the post over and over, even using it to tell the RSPCA, Battersea, and me that we are wrong. So what's the truth?
A healthy dog will enjoy a cold snack on a hot day, just like us. Ice cubes in the water bowl, frozen chicken broth, stuffed frozen kongs, doggy ice lollies... all fine. You should supervise your pet as any hard treat presents a small choking risk and offer a sensible amount. But that's it. Oh and don't use cow's milk in case it causes diarrhoea.
BUT the source of this urban myth is that vets do not advise giving an overheated dog ice or ice cold water. Just like an athlete wouldn't gulp down a frosty pint at the finish line, neither should a very hot dog. Very cold water can cause stomach cramps and vomiting, which make any dehydration worse. If a dog then dies, it is the heatstroke and dehydration, not so much the ice. An overheated dog should be offered small amounts of room temperature water every few minutes (again, gulping down a huge bowl could lead to vomiting).
So there you go, the full story. And some photos of my dogs enjoying puppy milk ice pops and frozen kongs, as they do every summer. I'd love you to share, but I'm neither a celebrity vet or an anonymous internet source so I expect to be writing the same thing when 'that' post pops up next heatwave!

I would like to introduce Archie to the Wiggly Waggely Gang! He's a gorgeous boy and I'm sure we are going to have lots of fun together!! 💕 he was a bit unsure of me at first so we are spending lots of time taking things at his pace and allowing him to process things in his own time. I am always guided by each dog individually and I'm happy to spend as much time as needed with them to make them feel safe and secure when they are with me 🥰🥰🥰

I have had a very upsetting incident out on a walk with a reactive dog this morning 😡 as my lovely clients know I take the dogs I walk to quiet locations due to specialising in reactive, elderly and unsocialised dogs and only offer 1 to 1 walks.
This morning I set off on my usual walk and could hear several dogs barking and a lady stood on a river bank. The dogs (5 or more, didn't have time to count) were off lead in the river. There is a sign as you enter the location that clearly states dogs should not be off the lead in the wooded areas ( most of the area is wooded) I said hello and with that the dogs flew out of the river and all came round the reactive dog I had on a lead, she had no control whatsoever 😡 luckily i managed to pull my dog away and carry on but was followed by one of the dogs ( a brown cockerpoo) for quite a distance, it was out of her sight for a number of minutes and was not responding to her call! I have reported her to the estate for having dogs off when she shouldn't. If you chose to send your dog with a group dog walker then please make sure you know what they are doing with your dog!! The Cockerpoo that followed me could have been gone in a second or even run over! I won't name and shame her on here but anyone who is concerned can contact me for more information.
🌞 Hi Everyone! With hot temperatures due if you would prefer me to just let your dogs out in the garden and just spend time with them rather than a walk, please let me know! I'm trying my best to walk them in cooler shaded areas. Enjoy the weather!!!

I had the lovely Archie this morning. Archie absolutely loves his walks but as soon as we get out of the car he gets his head down and speed walks the whole way, he's so enthusiastic and loves to be out! Today we took things a bit steadier, we made lots of short stops so he could have a good sniff and take in his surroundings a bit more at a slower pace and the difference in him was immediate! I felt he got a lot more from his walk and seemed much more content 🥰 he even went for a paddle in the river! For me taking a dog out isn't about how fast and far we get somewhere it's about learning and exploring the surroundings In a calm and relaxing manner. Today really made me smile seeing the difference in him and this is why I love what I do! ❤
