Life threw us a hard curve ball and we had to readdress the best thing for our little family and here we are! Something I only could dream about this time last year. For Tollerholme Gundogs this is a huge leap! We will have more training facilities, room for more residents, training holidays, the list is endless and I can’t wait to share the journey with you all! For us as a family it really does mean everything! To know Ned is going to grow up in this amazing place is a weight off my shoulders. He has everything he loves and more right outside his bedroom window. Our pedigree flock can expend as well as our new commercial flock. We also have lots of new animals to show you over the next few weeks too. I usually stick to a colour theme for the season but this time I just couldn’t decide ( I already have the lilac carrier) . I’m terrible for loosing carriers so I’m hoping these stunning colours will show up when I drop them 🤣. Also super easy to clean without wet straps weighing you down even further. I can’t wait to really put them to the test this partridge season.

I’m really going to miss this in a few days time when it’s all over for another season. My team, just us, working together. There’s nothing like the bond you have with a working dog. It’s not an ownership it’s an understanding, an understanding that you both need each other. It’s teamwork, I spend more time with these guys than anyone else at this time of the year. Working your dog in the field is a privilege that should never be forgotten, even in the worst of weathers. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Well Ottos residential time has come to an end. What a character he is and certainly not the easiest of dogs to train. He passed his final test a calm, relaxed (no bouncing or pulling) walk around busy Harrogate followed by a stop off at the tempting pet shop. He got to choose his deer leg for being so good.
It’s so important I expose my residential dogs to every day life. It would be easy to train at home on the farm and think everything had gone in. It’s all put to the test in the big wide world.
Hopefully he will continue his training with us and we will see him for catch up lessons. He’s a big personality and they’ll be a hole in the team when he’s gone tomorrow!

A bit of an honesty post! I really struggle with posting videos of myself training FACT. I worry too much about other peoples opinions. I see posts of people training their amazing dogs but often you only see the good bits people want you to see. I have to remind myself these aren’t my dogs, these are other peoples dogs that people are struggling with. Otto has only been here 3 weeks. He was a serial dummy thief and would run off expecting a game. He pulled on a simple slip lead and his heel work was hit and miss. He enjoys a game of catch me with his recall and it’s makes training hard. He’s a tough breed too but one I adore. When you get it right it feels like you’ve reached the moon. Don’t get me wrong he’s not perfect we have LOTS of work to do. Everything needs tidying and polishing but he’s a keen learner and loves to work. The foundations are in place now, myself and his owners have a path going forward and he now has some boundaries. So important for this breed. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. He’s an absolute joy to work with and our sessions our fun. That’s what it should be about.

Because Otto is now getting used to his new heel work position and the loose lead we can step it up and ask him to stand alone. He’s listening to my voice to understand where he needs to be. His little bunny hop back into position gets me every time. This is amazing work for 3 days here. After only a few corrections he’s picked up that’s where I want him and naturally goes back to the heel position.
