Hi, my name is Katie and I'm a canine behaviourist and dog training instructor. In 2012 I completed my degree: BSc (Hons) Applied animal behaviour and training. I have been training my own dogs since I was 9 years old and teaching other human/dog partnerships for the last 8 years. I currently work my 7 year old border collie at grade 5 in agility (after three years off due to university and having
my baby) and am looking forward to getting stuck in with training our new addition, 8 week old border collie, Bridie. My achievements to date include: YKC crufts obedience winner, Crufts agility dog of the year qualifier, crufts team agility, Olympia semi finalist, CSJ novice finalist, Junior European Championship team member and European open team member in which we gained bronze for Great Britain. These a few of my personal achievements I am most proud of but I am also proud that I have trained other partnerships to become successful (some winning from grade 1 to 7 in agility and others just to become well adjusted, obedient pets). I offer 1-2-1 behaviour consultations, pet obedience, beginners to advanced agility training, puppy training, behaviour rehabilitation, dog walking and much more. We had a very poorly little girl in hospital and the show season has started which means I hardly have time to breathe! I am going to try to respond to all enquiries today. I've got a few new clients at the moment who are also parents of young children so I do find myself using a lot of comparisons and analogies to explain our dog training. I was quite pleased with this one that came to me today so sharing here 🤣
Comparing loose lead walking to learning to read!
Would you hand your 4 year old child a novel and expect them to read it enthusiastically and fluently? No. Obviosuly not, they don't even know the alphabet yet!
So how can we expect our puppy or dog to walk perfectly on a half hour lead walk when we haven't even taught them the alphabet?! 🤪
When teaching children to read we first teach them the sound of each letter, we praise them heavily for recognising "b" sounds like "buh", "e" sounds like "eh", "d" sounds like "duh", eventually celebrate them understanding that buh - eh - duh spells "bed"!!! We praise every word they manage to decipher and only once they are doing this well expect them to add more fluency... that comes from practice, practice, practice and being rewarded for getting it right! Eventually we praise every sentence rather than every word. Then every page. Then an entire chapter. Then a whole novel! And throughout this entire process of using praise to increase confidence they are more willing to try and learn to LOVE reading. Would it be reasonable to read one book with them, tell them how awesome that was, then expect them to continue reading without ever acknowledging their efforts again? Or should we continue to nurture them, reward them, help them to find joy in reading?
Don't expect your puppy/dog to read a novel if you haven't taught them the alphabet 🥰 reward the small steps, frequently and enthusiastically. Increase the difficulty when they have mastered the step before. But continue rewarding! And don't be cross if they struggle in a new situation, perhaps they haven't been taught that "tricky word" yet. Start in a low distraction environment (my kids ain't learning anything if youtube is blaring in the background!) and gradually increase what you are asking of them when you have built lots of success 🙌

Of course there have been hard times, running a business while being a mummy to my 4 wonderful babies is never going to be a walk in the park (no pun 🤪) but I genuinely love every moment I'm working with dogs (and their people; you are all brilliant).

North Derbyshire Dog Agility Club Championship Show 2023
Last year at this show I was in tears... this year at this show I was in tears!!!
Last year was because after trying so hard all season to try to keep Nova's focus in the ring she ran out sniffing in every run 😭
This year I came out of our last run and burst in to happy tears! 🥺💛
Her first show at grade 5 and 4 out of 4 clear rounds!!! (One shows as a 5R because I accidentally let her come past the first jump before I was ready to start but she thinks she was clear 😉).
One 2nd place and TWO FIRSTS!!!! That's half way to grade 6 at her first grade 5 show 🥺🎉🤯😍
Her contacts were to die for and her weaves were perfection which were our main area of faults the last few months but I've worked really hard on them the last couple of weeks and it seems to have paid off 🙌🙌🙌

My girls did great at The Kennel Club International Agility Festival ❤️❤️
We have a couple of great opportunities for kids coming up over the next few weeks. Both held at Hopewell Dog Park, Knaresborough.
The first being our Kat's Dogs Kid's Club! Tuesday 22nd August. 3 hours training split between 1.5 hours of introduction to agility and 1.5 hours of fun tricks and obedience games. Aimed at ages 6 to 12 ish. This is bookable via the website.
Secondly we have some amazing guest trainers (Blair Hands and Dylan Osborne) coming on Sunday 17th September. This is for those that have already done some agility. We have spaces left in the junior group and the grade 5-7 group 😊 message me to register your interest.

Today we said the hardest goodbye. It was a decision I never wanted to have to make but I made a promise to him two years ago when he got poorly and the vets thought that was his time that I would know and I would do the right thing. It was the right thing for him but that was one of the hardest things I'll ever have to do. The last few months he was slowing down but his good days outweighed his bad however for the last couple of weeks that wasn't the case. On Monday night me and Neil made one of the hardest decisions anyone ever has to make and yesterday we told the girls and all cried together, we then took him down to our field where he went through a tunnel, sniffed a lot and lay in the sunshine. He had chicken nuggets from McDonald's on the way home and lay on the sofa with us all watching TV. Today he had steak for lunch, sat in the garden and then the lovely Jessica May from The Visiting Vet Company - Mobile Vet Harrogate, North Leeds & Surrounds came and we said goodbye. He was so peaceful lying on his bed and me and Neil were holding him the whole time telling him how very loved he is.
Todd, thank you for being by my side through absolutely everything; from a pretty broken 17 year old girl to the slightly less messed up 33 year old woman I am today. Through heartbreak, university, loss, love, marriage, house moves, pregnancies, babies, children, my business, my good days and my bad you were right by my side. My girls have never known a life without you. Neil has never known me without you. We are all completely broken right now. But, how bloody lucky were we to have your love for all these years? We have so, so many memories to cherish forever.
Go up there and have strength back in your legs, chase all the hares, play agility, find Rocky to annoy and tug on Lily's ears, snap at the water from the hosepipe, jump in to everyone's arms you meet, bite runners ankles, have a fight (and win) with any bullmastiff you see, run on the beach, eat alllll the steak, you will be able to jump on the sofa again, you can unwrap presents every day and play with every tuggy toy. There will be no pain or frustration any more my perfect boy.
Thank you to Jess for being so compassionate and treating him so gently, to Wharfedale Pet Cremations who waited outside our house until we were ready and tucked him up in a lovely cosy bed to go on his final journey, and to Katie Wainwright and Alice Rose Patchett for their love and understanding and picking up the pieces as far as the business is concerned. Most of all thank you to Neil for being our rock even when you're hurting just as much as the rest of us, I would have completely fallen apart without you by my side.
Thank you Mum and Dad for the best 17th birthday present a girl could have ever wished for and to Mandy and Marcus for letting him be mine, I hope you know he couldn't have been more loved than he was in this family.
I'm not sad for him today, he was ready to go. I'm just sad because I (all of us) will miss him so so so much. 16 years of memories are going to last a lifetime though and I'll try not to be sad for too long.
Toddy toes, thank you for everything, you can rest now, we will be ok, you've done your job. We love you forever.

CRUFTS 2023 🎉🎉🎉 What can I say? This little team blew me away. They took the huge, noisy, overwhelming environment totally in their stride. They looked phenomenal on that green carpet 😍 3 runs and one little mistake in each. A 5R in the jumping resulted in 3rd place 🙌🙌🙌 For their first Crufts we couldn't have asked for any more of either of them. So excited to watch them continue to grow and improve together ❤️ Robyn's handling has just got better and better recently... We are all about that bond and teaching a dog to love to tug is a great way to do that 🙌 The toy is so much more fun when there is someone playing at the other end! Love this video, Sky is desperate to get the toy back in her human's hand to resume the game ❤ She is also not as obsessed with the tug as she was her ball and is able to switch off and go sniff and explore when the game is over when previously she was just waiting for the ball to be thrown constantly. It's a weird thing being a parent. I LOVE agility. Everything about it. Running my dogs and winning used to be THE best feeling in the world. Not anymore. I've found an even better feeling. Watching my daughter running her dog, giving it her absolute all and loving it as much as I do is the best feeling in the world. Watching her win and achieve her dreams is just the cherry on the top.
